Presentation Notes
4 departments, 6 majors. Smaller school on campus, big draw for transfer students, smaller classes, more contact with faculty, etc. Consumer Science – Question we hear a lot is the difference between a major is CS and a major in the School of Business. CS majors learn about business from the perspective of the consumer. CS does tend to lend itself well to transfer students with coursework in business. These courses can often transfer to CS since there is some course overlap. PF – prepares students to be financial planners, family financial management program, registered through he Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards (CFP) Retailing – prepares students for a variety of career paths within the retailing industry (including store management, merchandising (buying), information systems, distribution, inventory management, public relations, advertising, personnel management, and direct marketing.) DS – professional programs. Name changes. IA is nationally accredited by CIDA (Council for Interior Design Accreditation) TFD is a fashion design program but students also learn about textiles and fabrics. Qualified students in TFD have the option to finish their final year at FIT in NYC. These students finish with a BS from UW and an Associate’s Degree from FIT. Want to see these students as soon as possible. Apply early – 4 year program for most

Overview of SoHE Departments/Majors, continued

• Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS)– Lifespan development program – Interdisciplinary approach to family relationships focusing on

intervention, prevention, and policy studies

• Civil Society and Community Studies • Community and Nonprofit Leadership (CNPL)

– Focus on leadership and management, program planning, and community education.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
HDFS – similar to Psychology or Sociology but this degree is specifically geared towards the family. The context of the family and the context of the family within the larger society. CNPL – prepares students to work in the nonprofit sector or within community based agencies. Four content areas: program planning, education, assessment, and leadership. 18 credit complementary professional option that allows students to choose a focus area related to nonprofit management or community issues/causes

General Degree Requirements for SoHE Majors

• Bachelor of Science Degrees• Human Ecology Breadth• Public Speaking • 120 Credit minimum for degree

Presenter
Presentation Notes
All of the majors use a similar model for general education requirements. BS – students have a 9-12 credit science requirement rather than foreign language. SoHE does not require foreign language beyond what is required for admission to UW. 120 credits required for graduation. This means that after major requirements and gen eds required for all UW students, SoHE students have less room for elective credits. Heavy sequencing in ID, TAD, and PF. Human Ecology breadth – course taken within SoHE but outside the student’s home department. Tradition of human ecology to understand how our majors fit together and understand each other’s scholarship. Public Speaking – want our students to be prepared to speak professionally. Hear this a lot that UW students aren’t always polished public speakers after graduation, so we want to be sure that our students have a chance to learn and enhance these skills.

Course Preparation for Transfer Students

• Checksheets available online (https://sohe.wisc.edu/prospective-students/academics)

• General Education courses– Science – Biological and Physical– Psychology 202 “Introduction to Psychology”– Statistics – UW equivalent of STAT 301, GEN BUS 303, PSYCH 210, or SOC 360– Math – requirement varies by major– Public Speaking – UW equivalent of COM ARTS 100 or 105 or L SC COM 100– Economics – Microeconomics for all majors except Textile & Apparel Design and HDFS– Economics – Macroeconomics for Consumer Science majors

• Design Studies courses– DS 120 “Design Fundamentals I” and DS 220 “Design Fundamentals II” – Preferred when taken at

UW. If not taken at UW, preferred when taken through a design department instead of an art department.

– Design courses taken at technical colleges do not often transfer to UW

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Prospective students should call the main office so they can be matched up with an advisor that specializes in the student’s area of interest. 30 minute appointments in person or via phone. We would talk about program of interest, course requirements. Unable to do in depth credit evaluations (TIS Transfer Plans). Students need to go through Office of Admissions to see what transfers. Students could then work with us to see what us might be able to transfer into the program. Advisors should contact the transfer coordinator. Let’s take the rest of the session to answer your questions!
