- arising from or going to the root or source … going to the origin- markedly new or introducing radical change … revolutionary

These are exciting times at the University of Calgary’s School of Creative and Performing Arts.

We are, quite literally, pushing our own boundaries, exploring not only the distinctiveness of our three divisions but also the many opportunities for inter-arts collaboration and exchange now available to us. At the same time as we are reasserting our commitment to the rich established traditions of Drama, Dance and Music, we are reinventing ourselves as a thoroughly contemporary hub for experimentation and innovation.

What does it mean to be radical in 2015? These pages hold one answer to that question. Each of our divisions has programmed a season that digs down to its roots, re-affirming its original artistic foundations. As well, each will offer audiences opportunities to experience work that is completely novel, even revolutionary, in spirit and execution. We are on a journey of discovery, vigorously and rigorously pursuing a deep understanding of where we come from, at the same time as we grasp, hungrily, towards that which has never before been seen or heard or felt.

We would like nothing more than to have you join us.

THE CONTAINERby Clare BayleyOct. 20 - 24 at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at 2 p.m.Oct. 28 - 31 at 7:30 p.m.Visit our website for the venue!

A freight container, somewhere in Europe. Inside are five people with one common aim: to reach England and start a new life. Can they trust the agent to get them there? Can they rely on each other? And how far will each of them go to get what they want?

The Container premiered at the 2007 Edinburgh Festival where it won a Fringe First Award for outstanding new writing. The play also won the 2007 Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award.

INSIDEby Daniel MacIvorNov. 24 - 28 at 7:30 p.m.Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. Dec. 2 - 5 at 7:30 p.m.Reeve Theatre

Over the course of one day twelve urban dwellers come into contact in pairs: an anarchist and his girlfriend, a lawyer and her client, an employer and his new hire, two alcoholics at an AA meeting, a working girl and her john, two strangers on a bus. None of them realize that as a group their fates are to be profoundly interconnected. Inside is a play about modern life and the quest to find our way inside.

Playwright/actor Daniel MacIvor will work with University of Calgary drama students to adapt and direct Inside.

THE LEARNED LADIESby MolièreFeb. 16 - 20 at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at 2 p.m.Feb. 24 - 27 at 7:30 p.m.

University Theatre

One of the most successful works by one of the most celebrated playwrights of the neoclassical period, Moliere’s The Learned Ladies takes aim at scholarly pretension and the education of women in 17th Century France. Familiar themes of love, marriage, and intrigue intersect with sharp-edged social critique and unerring political wit, demonstrating Moliere’s mastery of dramatic form and the keen, enduring relevance of his satire.

Our season invites audiences to embark upon a series of extraordinary theatrical adventures and sensory experiences. The penetrating, intimate writing of Daniel MacIvor’s Inside; the stark, emotional, dangerous terrain of Clare Bayley’s Amnesty International Award-winning The Container; the timeless, elegant, take-no-prisoners wit of Moliere’s The Learned Ladies; and the fantastic energy, passion and invention of the annual Taking Flight Festival. Combined, these productions promise to not only excite and energize audiences but also inspire reflection on the evolving relationship between individuals and the societies in which they live.
