With its 50th Anniversary, the University of Calgary graduates from the ranks of Canada’s “Young Universities” with both a proud sense of its distinct and colourful past and a strong, innovative vision for the future. As it heads into its third full season of programming, the School of Creative and Performing Arts is, by comparison, a heady and hungry adolescent of an organization, driven by curiosity, urgency, and an appetite for the world. But, of course, Dance, Drama and Music have been integral parts of the University of Calgary since its earliest days, and our offerings in 2016/17 continue to reflect a careful balance between a deep respect for our artistic roots and a driving passion for aesthetic transformation.

Across our three divisions audiences can engage with tradition and experimentation, virtuosity and rebellion, as our students and faculty animate the classical and champion the emerging. Our season combines familiar discipline-specific programming elements with ambitious new interdisciplinary initiatives, as well as brand new ways for audiences to attend, participate, and belong as members of our community. Simply put, we are trying to imagine the future of performance and the deep, diverse, and constantly evolving relevance of the arts in contemporary society — and we hope you’ll join us in the cause.

SplitScreenPeggy Baker Dance Projects Dance Division Pro Series

Sep. 23 and 24 at 8 p.m. University Theatre

In the annual Pro Series, established, internationally acclaimed choreographers, including faculty and guest artists, push the boundaries of contemporary choreography in an evening of provocative performance.

The four kinetic and visually arresting works that make up this year’s Pro Series: SplitScreen all have one unusual feature in common — each dance presents two distinct, but synchronous, lines of action.

The solo from locus plot suspends a solitary figure in the void while others measure the pace of eternity. For Yang, two men vie for dominance, simultaneously performing different versions of the same physically virtuosic solo. Split Screen Stereophonic is a highly charged double duet that uses a stage divided in two to contrast two couples, each veering unstably from intense connection to collapse. epilogue, a meditation on absence and loss, is both a solo for a dancer and a duet for a pair of chairs.

Choreography: Peggy Baker Lighting Design: Marc Parent Dancers: Peggy Baker, Ric Brown, Sarah Fregeau, Kate Holden and David Norsworthy

“Peggy is a true dance bohemian: she knows how to play up against contemporary orthodoxy and turn it on its head. It’s why she is a great artist... There is always method in what she does, but what she does is always unexpected and always a joy to watch...”

SPLENDOURBy Abi Morgan

Oct. 28-29 at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. Nov. 1-5 at 7:30 p.m. University Theatre

Explosions in the distance, gradually nearing.... Four women await the return of the dictator to the palace, the fragments of their lives pieced into the mosaic of history. In this award-winning contemporary play, “Abi Morgan’s writing brilliantly encompasses both the cruel veneer of our lives and the beating heart within” (OffWestEnd.com). “Gripping” (four stars, The Guardian).

SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHORBy Luigi Pirandello

Dec. 2-3 at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. Dec. 6-10 at 7:30 p.m. Reeve Theatre

Pirandello, one of the twentieth century’s signature theatrical innovators, interrogates the nature of illusion and reality in this groundbreaking and prophetic work. In this vital and contemporary interpretation of the classic play, the theatre’s ‘sacred’ fourth wall is broken when ‘six characters’ appear at a rehearsal and plead for the chance to tell their stories.

MOTHER COURAGE AND HER CHILDRENBy Bertolt Brecht

Feb. 17-18 at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. Feb. 21-25 at 7:30 p.m. University Theatre

Truly “Epic” in its scope, Mother Courage and Her Children combines a deeply moving examination of human frailty with a provocative call to arms for social change — one that has only intensified in relevance in the almost 80 years since it was first staged. This vivid reimagining of Brecht’s masterpiece explores the distance between those who participate in war, those who profit from it, and those who consume its drama … that is, the audience.

TAKING FLIGHTFestival of Student Work

March 28-April 1 April 5-8 Reeve Theatre

For over a decade, the annual Taking Flight Festival has showcased our students’ voracious energy, keen curiosity, unfettered imagination, and emerging expertise. In projects conceived, directed, designed, produced and performed by undergraduate and graduate students, a broad range of performance forms and genres have lifted off from our stages, from bold and innovative interpretations of classic texts through original stagings of new writing and collaboratively devised works of performance-creation.

Reflecting Drama’s transition from a separate department to an integrated division within the School of Creative and Performing Arts, this season’s festival features expanded interdisciplinary programming that embraces student accomplishment in Dance and Music as well. Your Taking Flight pass this year will include admission to Dance@Night as well as a series of Chamber Music concerts, the New Music Ensemble, and the latest offering from the Voice Lab/Opera Workshop. As yet another added feature, the festival will also offer a window on the SCPA’s next major interdisciplinary project, slated for full production in 2017/2018.

How better to capture the radical aspirations and accomplishments of our courageous, multi-talented students within all three of our divisions?
