Dear Parents, Teachers and Friends, During this season of Lent, we are called to fast, pray and give to others. Prayer can often mean different things for different people. Often our understanding of prayer can be too narrow and can exclude everyday experiences because they don’t fit our definition of what prayer is or is supposed to be. If prayer is any activity that nurtures our relationship with God, then, if having a cup of tea with a friend nurtures this relationship that is prayer. If sitting still in a park or garden feeds your soul that is prayer. Listening to music, assisting at children’s liturgy, coaching a team, can all be prayer. We may have stopped praying because our “old” images of God are no longer valid and we have no “new” images to replace them. If we try to figure out who God is before we pray, we might never pray. If we wait to pray till we have the right words, we might never pray. The longer we wait to pray the more we leave God “in the Church” or in a “Religious Ceremony” instead of in a relationship with us. Sometimes our prayer can be brief but meaningful: “God, I need Your help.” “Walk with me, Jesus, for I am unsure of myself.” “Spirit of God, I need the gift of understanding – NOW!” “Praise the Lord.” “Thanks be to God.” These short bursts of prayer, recognize God’s on-going presence in our daily lives. The practice of prayer can be comfortable or challenging, easy or difficult. Like human relationships, our relationship with God will go through many stages; sometimes it will fill us with great joy, other times it will seem boring and stale. We may even have times where we break our relationship with God, going our own way, paying no attention to God or to prayer. But God does not turn away. God keeps calling. After a while, a longing to return to God will arise. This longing is a sign of faithfulness; we have been touched in some way; we have heard God’s call. When this occurs it is not a time for feelings of guilt; it is time for rejoicing. ST PATRICK’S NIGHT This event is occurring this Saturday beginning at 5:30 pm with an outdoor mass on the school grounds on the outside stage area. This should be a terrific event with great food, games and entertainment, much of which will be provided by the students of St Mary’s. Unfortunately we have recently had word that Bishop Michael, who was to be attending, can’t do so any more due to illness. SWIMMING Swimming lessons are continuing this and next week. Thanks to those in our school community who have done the training and are now teaching our students how to swim. Following the lessons, a School Faction Swimming Carnival is being held on Thursday 28

th

March and an Interschool Carnival is being held on the Friday, April 5. The Pre-Primary to Year 2 students are having a water fun day on Friday 29th March. MIDDLE SCHOOL PARISH MASS Homerooms 1 and 2 will be coordinating the parish mass on Sunday the 31

st March at the usual

mass time of 9:00 am. This is a terrific opportunity for our middle school students to demonstrate their faith leadership skills. It is expected that all students in Homerooms 1 and 2 attend this mass. God Bless

Mass Times Saturday night - 7pm

Sunday morning - 9am

St. Patrick’s Day Mass Everyone in our school community is warmly invited to attend the St. Patrick’s Day Mass which will be starting at 5:30pm on the 16

th of March. The Mass will be held at St. Mary Star of the Sea

school grounds rather than in the Church and unfortunalety due to sickness Bishop Michael Morrissey will not be able to attend. There will be a number of festivities following Mass, including an outdoor dinner. Come along to what should be a great school community event. Pope Francis’ 2019 Message For Lent Dear brothers and sisters, the “lenten” period of forty days spent by the Son of God in the desert of creation had the goal of making it once more that garden of communion with God that it was before original sin (cf. Mk 1:12-13; Is 51:3). May our Lent this year be a journey along that same path, bringing the hope of Christ also to creation, so that it may be “set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God” (Rom 8:21). Let us not allow this season of grace to pass in vain! Let us ask God to help us set out on a path of true conversion. Sacrament of Baptism Expression of Interest If there are any students who are interested in receiving the Sacrament of Baptism please let me know and I will forward your details to Fr. Mariusz. I can be contacted by email: [email protected] or feel free to chat to me in person before or after school hours. St Patrick’s Family Night

Our annual St. Patrick’s Family Night is on again Saturday 16th March, starting at 5.30PM. The tradition of commemorating the feast day of Saint Patrick started in 1906 with the founders of our school, the Presentation Sisters, holding an annual fundraising event in celebration of the Saint, with proceeds put towards the building of a convent. The Sisters hailed from Ireland, of which Saint Patrick is the patron saint. For more than 100 years this event has been a fixture on the school’s social calendar and has taken many forms from concert, variety show, ball, with formal and informal dress, and held at a variety of locations such as Jubilee Hall, Masonic Hall, on various plantations in packing sheds, and now on the school grounds as a family-friendly social event that brings the school, parish and Carnarvon community together. For the night to succeed, we require the whole school community to be involved. A note has been sent home to each family asking for your assistance for the event. So that preparations can be finalised, please complete the note and return to the School by this Friday 15th March 2019.
