THEME & WORD OF THE WEEK Achievement and Success

‘Draw a distinction between achievement and success. Achievement is the knowledge that you have studied and worked hard and done the best that is in you. Success is being praised by others.

That is nice but not as important or satisfying. Always aim for achievement and forget about

success.’

Squalor ‘Extremely dirty and

Latin Department Trip to Rome – Student Review

On 3rd February, 24 students from years 10, 11

and 12 set off for Rome. We went to see many

things, such as the Trevi fountain, the Spanish

Steps and the Pantheon. We went to see the

Pantheon because it is one of only a few Roman

temples still standing today in which the Romans

would have worshipped all of their gods. This

temple is special because it has a hole in the

domed roof, allowing natural sunlight to enter. On

the second day we went to see the Colosseum,

the Roman Forum and the Palantine Hill. We also

went to see the Circus Maximus, where Romans

held chariot races. It used to hold up to 250,000

people. On the third day we went to see the

Baths of Caracalla, where they offered free baths

to those who lived in poverty. On the same day

we also went to see the Vatican and Sistine

Chapel, which was truly an amazing experience.

The chapel was absolutely beautiful and we learnt

so much about it. On the last day we went to

Ostia Antica, which used to be a Roman harbour.

I really enjoyed this trip as not only did it let me

see another country and culture, but it allowed

me to learn very interesting and useful

information while still having fun.

Career talk from ex-student, George Imafidon

On Wednesday 21st February,

the 6th Form were honoured to

receive a talk from George

Imafidon, co-creator of the

career enhancing event platform

Motivez and former Kingsdale

student, on the role that

education has played in achieving

his personal and professional

goals. As someone who has taken up positions

at Rolls Royce and Google (with his work at Rolls Royce

leading to a congratulatory meeting with the Queen), the

level of success that George has achieved in such a short

period of time was nothing short of awe-inspiring, and

unsurprisingly, his audience were positively enthralled by

his stories.

Over the course of an hour and a half, George delivered

an incredibly candid talk to the students, drawing on some

difficult personal experiences to deliver a proactive

message that reminded all in attendance that ambition

must be matched by effort. This was followed by a

dynamic Question and Answer session, where practical

solutions on how to best cope with the key challenges

that one may face in Sixth Form were discussed.

It made for an incredible afternoon, with George’s

presentation leaving those in attendance with some real

food for thought on how today’s actions make for

tomorrow’s successes. Great to see you again George!

E-Safety News Update!

Many parents and

carers will know

about the current

craze of the

Snapchat social

media platform

that allows young people to share image

messages between mobile devices. There has

been much criticism from the general public

about its recent re-design. In addition to this,

we also received some information from

National Online Safety, an organisation which

advises schools on how to remain safe whilst

using the internet; there is a current craze

which we would like to bring to your attention.
