SCHOOL NEWS Key Stage 4 Study Skills Presentation
Saturday 27th January 2018
On Saturday 27th January, parents and
students in Year 10/11 attended a workshop
to learn how to use a range of useful
strategies to develop learning and to raise
attainment more rapidly. The activities
included hands-on exercises to help parents
become more aware of changes and
expectations of current specifications in the
core subjects, along with effective approaches
and tools that students can use to improve
revision techniques.
Parent feedback included:
‘It was very informative, and I am glad I came along ... If you are holding any other workshops I
would be very interested in attending them.’
‘We have come away with a better understanding of the kind of support that we will be able to offer
our son.’

Jessop Primary School Year 4 Visit to
Kingsdale Science Department
On Thursday 18th January, the Science
Department at Kingsdale played host to
the Year 4 pupils from Jessop Primary
School, Herne Hill, who visited as part
of their learning about electricity and
how electrical energy flows. Our visitors
had access to our high-tech science
equipment & laboratories to learn how
electrons flow around circuits. They also
carried out experiments
in our science labs to
prove the science
behind the electron
flow theory. This is
just one of the many
activities we run with
local primary schools
here at Kingsdale
to assist pupils in their
transition between Key Stages 2 and 3. A great time was
had by all and we look forward to seeing them again!

6th Form Visit to British Film Institute (BFI),
Southbank
On 31st January, some of our
6th form students took part in
the BFI Southbank’s study day
for A Level French. They were
accompanied by Mr Hood and
Mr Bahmani and were involved
in high level discussions on
cinematic themes and
techniques (in French of
course!) to develop their
ability to speak and write
about these topics. This was followed by a
screening of the critically acclaimed French film ‘La
Haine’ which depicts the challenges facing second
generation immigrants in the suburbs of Paris.
Students in Year 12 and 13 said they were inspired
to discover more French language films and that the
day had been a big success.
The Languages department is proud of all the
students who participated and contributed so well.
Bravo à nos étudiants qui ont fait un très bon effort!
Ralph Hodson visits the Photography Department
Freelance photographer and parent Ralph Hodgson
came in to give a talk to Key Stage 5 pupils about
his experiences and travels as a photographer and
what it is like working within the industry. Pupils were
incredibly inspired by his work and were able to gain
lots of insight into his techniques and processes. It
was a great event which was enjoyed by all.

House News DO SOMETHING
AMAZING IN 2018!
ALBATROSS HOUSE
ARE SUPPORTING
The Honeypot Children’s Charity offers both
respite breaks and outreach support to young
carers and vulnerable children, many of whom
would otherwise have nowhere to turn. Honeypot
are proud to be the only charity in the UK
offering consistent support throughout childhood;
from the age of 5 until a child’s 12th birthday.
Respite Breaks
Honeypot House is located in the beautiful New
Forest and has seven acres of idyllic grounds
where children can, put very simply, be children.
Each Friday, 12 children are collected from school
and travel to Honeypot House for a weekend of
fun activities and time away from the stressful
responsibilities they face at home. During school
holidays, children can take a break for almost a
whole week away.
At Honeypot House, children are able to choose
from a range of ways to spend their weekend;
swimming in the pool, playing on the adventure
playground, riding bikes, visiting pets corner or
baking special treats are just some of the ways in
which these children are able to play, have fun,
and make happy memories which they can cherish
for years to come.
In the Summer of 2016, Honeypot opened
Honeypot Pen y Bryn in mid-Wales, the second
respite home. Honeypot Pen y Bryn has allowed
the charity to expand their services and they can
now offer respite for young carers and vulnerable
children in Wales, Manchester, Birmingham and
Liverpool.
Outreach support
The Honeypot
Playbus is a specially
adapted mobile
play centre, where
children who
experience similar
difficulties and deprivation in their lives meet, play
and socialise in a non-judgmental, safe and
therapeutic environment. The Playbus focuses on
play, fun and interaction between peers with the
support of positive adult role models. Each
Honeypot child will be visited three times a year
in their own community by the bus, giving them
the rare opportunity to play freely. Thank you to
Albatross House for supporting this charity.
