TRANSCRIPT
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Like all schools in the Darwin Region, staff professional learning is strongly focused on the work of
Professor John Hattie. His work, Visible Learning, is the result of 15 years’ research and synthesises
over 800 meta-analyses (over 50,000 studies) relating to the influences on achievement in
school-aged students. It presents the largest ever collection of evidence-based research into
what actually works in schools to improve learning.
We have teachers in our school who are trained Visible Learning impact coaches and they
assist other teachers in implementing the strategies from Visible Learning into every day
practice in their classrooms. Visible Learning focuses on analysing data so that teachers know
the impact of their teaching and using explicit strategies such as productive feedback, learning
intentions and success criteria.
Part of our Visible Learning action plan is communicating Visible Learning strategies and
processes to parents. Our newsletter will focus on a class each week to show the
implementation of Visible Learning in the classroom. Also, please have a look at our wonderful
Visible Learning video on the school website.
This semester we are part of the Sports in Schools Pilot Program in conjunction with other Darwin
City primary schools. Year 5 and 6 students will be participating in sports with students from other
Darwin City schools and in other school venues.
With the increase in our student enrolments, we are in a position to have a second Assistant
Principal. We welcome Tash Guse to this position for 6 months.
School finishes at 2.45pm and parents need to make arrangements for their child’s supervision
after school. It is also important that your child is aware of these arrangements. If you are
collecting your child from school, please be punctual as it is not acceptable for students to be
waiting regularly half an hour or more to be collected. We have an OSHC program operating
after school and if parents require care for their child after school hours, please contact
8941 4521 or 0438 813 211.
Regards,
Fathma Mauger

Newsletter 15 February 2017, Term 1 Week 3
News from the Larrakeyah Primary School Board
Welcome to all new and returning students, staff
and families. Fresh faces within our community
renew the energy and provide the opportunity to
continue to strengthen Larrakeyah Primary.
Your School Board convened on Monday 13th
February and continues to address items such as
fundraising, traffic and future infrastructure. We
welcome Leisa Beynon (Teacher rep) who is filling a
casual position due to the departure of former
teacher reps Rick Collister and Alison Walsh.
A recent Board achievement include the School
being approved as a Registered Provider. This
means the NT Government Sport Vouchers can now
be used to pay for ECA programme and the
finalising of the School Fundraising Strategy.
The Minister for Education will be visiting the School
on 6th March during which time Mrs Mauger,
myself and Deputy Chair, Rachita Jain, will raise key
matters: The School infrastructure master plan and
the importance of continuing the programme (i.e. to
keep building the new facilities in accordance with
the master plan); play grounds; the traffic on
Packard Street; and the broader strategic plan for
primary schools in the Darwin City Region, all of
which are under pressure due to growing student
populations.
The Board is key to Larrakeyah’s strategic success
and works collaboratively with the Leadership Team
(Principal, AP and Senior Teachers) to deliver
outcomes that are in the best interest of the
students and will enhance the education provided
by the School.
We have two parent vacancies, up to two teacher
vacancies, and an opportunity to co-opt a
community/industry/specialist onto the Board.
Expressions of interest from parents, teachers and
community members are now being made for those
who believe they have the time, passion and skills to
be part of the 2017 Board. Prior Board/School
Council/Committee experience is useful but not
required as training will be provided. Please
remember that this is a Board not a P&C so there is
a strategic focus. It is an extremely rewarding role
and I strongly encourage everyone to review the
website where further details, including application
forms, can be found. All EOI submissions are
required no later than Friday 3rd March.
The AGM will be held at 5pm Monday 13 March. I
encourage you to come to the AGM to be part of
shaping Larrakeyah’s future.
Now I’m not an educator, but I am familiar with
John Hattie (the Visible Learning & teacher feedback
chap Fathma often writes about) and I am a huge
believer that education is a three-way relationship
between teacher-student-parent. We at home, play
an important role. So I have a hot tip for you: When
your child/ren come home, instead of asking “How
was your day?” to receive a “It was great/bad/I
can’t remember”, try “What feedback did the
teacher give you today?” Now I thought this
approach was all a bit OTT but guess what? The
children KNOW what ‘feedback’ is (thankyou
teachers) AND my children launched into a story
regarding what their teacher said to them. It was
fabulous and generated great discussion.
See you at the AGM – 5pm Monday 13th March
2017 in the library.
Kind regards
Phillipa Tziolis
