Seesaw & e-mail
I load the answers to the MyM, TC, JG and other bits onto Seesaw. For anyone who hasn’t logged in yet, if you would like me to e-mail the answers please let me know. If you have any questions or queries regarding the assigned school work I will be online Monday to Friday 11:00 a.m. to 1:00p.m. at [email protected].
PE You are in charge of covering the PE curriculum in your house now. These are the strands that we would cover in school – games, athletics, dance, gymnastics and outdoor and adventure. Don’t forget to record your activities on the Active Home Week chart. This week why not try these for movement breaks: Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube, Go Noodle, RTE JR 10@10, Fitness Monopoly or Spell you name game.

Weight
This week is a great opportunity to put your maths work into practice if you are cooking or baking and have to weigh ingredients. That’s the best maths you can do!
Monday pg. 104
Please have a look at this video which describes what weight or mass is.https://learnzillion.com/lesson_plans/7338-find-the-mass-of-an-object-using-a-balance-scale/
Page 104Hint: Make sure to read the questions very carefully. Highlight the important words – heaviest, lightest etc.
Check out Seesaw for your activity today.

Tuesday p105
For question 2 you will need to improvise! You probably won’t have a balance scales at home but you might have a kitchen scales. You many not have cubes or lollipop sticks but what could you use instead?
If you are using a kitchen scales, you will need to weigh the copy book first, take note of the weight, then take off the copy book and put on the cubes until they weigh the same amount.
Don’t forget to estimate!
You may need to copy this table into your copybook if you are changing what you are weighing and what you are weighing with.
Activity:You might like to practice your balancing with the activity here:https://www.learningliftoff.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/2nd-Grade-Science-Balance-measures-mass.swf
You will need flash player to work it.And click the buttons that says ‘show mass’ to help.

Wednesday page 106
Question 1: What five objects do you see? How much does each object weigh?
__________ Are all the objects the same size?
_____________
For Question 2 you will need to find something in the kitchen/house that weighs 1kg. Hold this in your hand to help you answer question 2. You can hold the other item in your other hand. You will be acting like a balance scales!!

Thursday page 107
Question 1: What weights do you see on
each tray of the balances? How many ½ kg balance 1 kg? How many ¼ kg balance 1 kg?
This is all about fractions which you did so well in class. Think of your fraction wall when you answering the questions. How many 1/2 ‘s are in 1 whole etc.You have also practiced these in you MyM.
Question 2:This is similar to the activity on page 106 but you will need something that weighs 1/2 kg and something that weighs 1/4 kg to balance these.
School closure activities for 2nd class
IXL The activities this week focus on weight to practice the skills learnt above. 10 minutes a day. If you are stuck on a skill, before starting into a set of questions, when you click on the skill there is a little heading that says ‘Learn with an example’ and a drop-down arrow. This might help to get you going. It would be like me showing the boys and girls in the classroom before letting you off on your own.
Tables Check how long it takes you to do your tables on Monday, challenge yourself to beat this on Tuesday. But you need to be accurate as well! Also get someone at home to test your +9,-0 tables.Keep up the great work on Xtramath.
GaeilgeIt is our last chapter in Fuaimeanna & Focail !!!
Meanings for your Fuaimeanna agus Focail words. You don’t need to write a sentence in your copy this week for any of the words but I am loving hearing some of you making up Irish sentences using these words on Seesaw.
Aonad 30 – An AimsirAn ghrian – the sun Ag cur báistí - raining Fuar - cold fliuch - wetAn ghealach – the moon Ag cur sneachta - snowing Te – hot Gaofar - windy
Leigh sa Bhaile (LsB)I am so impressed with the Irish writing that I am seeing in your copies. Maith sibh.Again, this week read aloud the stories below and answer the questions in your copy. Things to remember from when we did these in class:
Check the English meanings that it gives you at the bottom of the page before you read the story. When you are answering the questions: Find the verb in the question first and usually the answer will start with this. Take care: If the question is An raibh? Then the answer will be Bhí or Ní raibh ×. Take care: If the question is An bhfuil? Then the answer will be Tá or Níl ×.
Challenge this week : Record yourself reading one of the stories. Load it to Seesaw or e-mail it to [email protected].

English – Jolly
Page 59 ContractionsOn page 57 you learnt how an apostrophe is used to indicate belonging. For example: Louise’s pens, Jamie’s bridge, Tom’s Pokémon cards.
School closure activities for 2nd class
GrammarContractions:
An apostrophe is also used to show that a letter, or letters, are missing. Sometimes we shorten a pair of words by joining them together and leaving out some of their letters. We use an apostrophe to show where the
missing letters used to be. This is what is called a contraction. If you look up the verb contract in the dictionary it means ‘to shorten’ or ‘to draw together’. Contractions are like squishing words together.
Examples:Read: Is notRead: Isn’tQuestion: Which letter or letters are missing? The O. The O is replaced by an apostrophe.
A contraction is always written as one word, not two. Take care to make sure that the apostrophe goes in the place of the missing letter. I have sometimes seen this has’nt. What is wrong here?
Examples:I always find it helpful to put the contractions into sentences to work out the words.
Do not Please do not run in the hallwayDon’t Please don’t run in the hallway
Has not She has not watched that show yetHasn’t She hasn’t watched that show yet
Have not He has seen my dog, but they haven’tHaven’t He has seen my dog, but they haven’t
Practice with contractions at this website before tackling your workbook page https://www.learninggamesforkids.com/vocabulary-games/contractions/contractions-card-flip.html . Click ‘next’ first and try to work them out yourself first, then click on ‘flip’ to check are you right.

planets. Remember to put the planets in order. If you are making a 3d solar system using foam balls or paper maché, try to ensure that you have the scale correct – will the sun be the same size as Neptune for example?
An easy way to remember the order of the planets is to remember this sentence:
My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Noodles.Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
You will need a clothes hanger, string, tape, glue, card, paint or colours and a scissors
