School Captain Policy Rationale At Caringbah Public School effective School Captains and Vice Captains support the development of a positive school culture through adhering to the school values of Excellence, Respect, Responsibility, Care and Integrity. School Captain and Vice Captain positions provide an opportunity for students to be actively represented in the school decision making processes. Aim Of The Policy Provide clear guidelines regarding the democratic selection process of electing the School Captains and Vice Captains. Provide clarification of student leadership responsibilities. Develop School Captain and Vice Captain capacities in a supportive school environment. Encourage School Captains and Vice Captains to model responsible behaviours and support the development of a positive school climate. Implementation A democratic process will be followed throughout the elections, with Principal and staff discretion if required. Adherence to the school values throughout the students’ schooling will be considered throughout the process. All positions have a probationary period of one term. If students have not upheld the school values during this period and/or their term of office, their position may be suspended or terminated. Any queries or concerns about any student leadership process should be taken up with the Principal. Student leaders are expected to be a role model for other students and must demonstrate a range of behaviours as per the role description provided. School Captain Policy Staff Captain and Vice Captain Selection Panel The purpose of the panel is to create a short list of candidates suitable for the Captain and Vice Captain positions according to the criteria listed in the School Captain and Vice Captain Policy. The Assistant Principals will discuss the nominated students and raise any concerns about any nomination at a stage meeting. The representative of each stage on the Selection Panel will then discuss any concerns about any student nomination with the Selection Panel. The Selection Panel will create a short list of students on the merits of the applications and speeches to the S3 classes. After the short list is created all nominated students will be informed of the decision of the panel. The short listed students will then prepare a speech for Years 2 - 6 and elections will be held. The panel will consist of:

• The principal • The Stage 3 teachers • A representative from Stage 2 and a representative from Stage 1

Timeline Term 4 2015 Week 7

• Captain and Vice Captain Selection Criteria explained and distributed to interested students in Year 5

• Nominations for Captain and Vice Captain positions accepted • Application forms handed in to the Selection Panel

Week 8 • All candidates prepare and give an election speech to S3 and the Selection Panel • Shortlisting of candidates completed • Students informed of the Selection Panel short list • Short listed students prepare a final election speech for the whole school

Week 9 • Short listed students deliver an election speech • Elections take place immediately afterwards in primary classrooms • There will be no weighting of votes for students or teachers • The counting of votes will be conducted by members of the Selection Panel and

results will be held in the strictest of confidence Week 10

• Captains and Vice Captains are announced at the Final School Assembly

School Captain Policy Prospective School Captains and Vice Captains will adhere to the Core Values of Caringbah Public School: Excellence Respect Responsibility Care Integrity Selection Criteria Candidates must

• Be in Year 5. • Have attended Caringbah Public School for a minimum of six months. • Have a high involvement in the life of the school. • Have demonstrated competence in public speaking. • Have an excellent attendance record. • Aspire and strive to achieve the highest standards of learning. • Show demonstrated leadership qualities including being mature, assertive, discrete,

loyal and articulate. Responsibilities may include:

• Representing the student body at official school functions. • Disseminating information to the student body. • Assisting with the induction of new students. • Assisting at the weekly assemblies. • Assisting on Kindergarten Orientation Days. • Leading the Anzac Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies. • Leading school special events. • Leading the Presentation Day Assemblies. • Assist the Principal and school staff when required. • Welcome and thank visitors to the school.

School Captain Policy In NSW public schools all students are expected to:

• Respect other students, their teachers and school staff and community members. • Follow school and class rules and follow the directions of their teachers. • Strive for the highest standards in learning. • Respect all members of the school community and show courtesy to all students,

teachers and community members. • Resolve conflict respectfully, calmly and fairly. • Comply with the school’s uniform policy or dress code. • Attend school every day (unless legally excused). • Respect all property. • Not be violent or bring weapons, illegal drugs, alcohol or tobacco into our schools. • Not bully, harass, intimidate or discriminate against anyone in our schools.

Behaviour Code for Students: At Caringbah Public School prospective Captains and Vice Captains are required to meet the highest standards of respectful, safe and engaged behaviour. Respect

• Treat one another with dignity. • Speak and behave courteously. • Cooperate with others. • Develop positive and respectful relationships and think about the effect on

relationships before acting. • Value the interests, ability and culture of others. • Dress appropriately by complying with the school uniform or dress code. • Take care with property.

Safety

• Model and follow departmental, school and/or class codes of behaviour and conduct.

• Negotiate and resolve conflict with empathy. • Take personal responsibility for behaviour and actions. • Care for self and others. • Avoid dangerous behaviour and encourage others to avoid dangerous behaviour.

School Captain Policy

Dear Year 5 students and parents,

It is that time of year where elections for the School Captains and Vice Captains are being conducted. Students who wish to nominate will be asked to complete the School Captain and Vice Captain Application Proforma. Candidates will be required to submit a written application to the Staff Selection Panel. Information about the criteria is attached. All applicants will also present a speech to the Stage 3 classes and the Selection Panel.

After the applications and speeches are considered, a short list of students will be selected by the Staff Selection Panel, according to the position criteria.

Final shortlisted applicants will be notified as soon as possible and will present a speech to the primary classes and teachers. School Captains and Vice Captains will then be elected based on the results of the teacher and Years 2 - 6 student votes. There will be no weighting of votes for students or teachers. The counting of votes will be conducted by members of the Selection Panel and results will be held in the strictest of confidence

The successful candidates will be announced and awarded with their Captains or Vice Captains badges at the Caringbah PS Presentation Day.

When preparing a speech, students are asked to cover the following criteria:

• The speech should be between 3 and 4 minutes. • It should refer to specific highlights of your school life as outlined in the School

Captain and Vice Captain Application Proforma. • You should discuss previous roles of responsibility you have held e.g. Class

Captain, SRC representative, captain of a sports team etc. • It should give examples of how you demonstrate the school values of Excellence,

Respect, Responsibility, Care and Integrity. Include qualities you possess that would make you a successful leader at Caringbah Public School.

• Speeches should be interesting, sincere and original. Displaying a sense of humour can make a speech more memorable but gimmicks and props should not be used.
