Last Wednesday saw our official graduation day for Year 12

2016, marking the end of 13 years of formal schooling. The

MPH was filled with parents, grandparents, carers and friends

to celebrate this most significant event in the lives of our

students. We also had special guests join us: Mr Craig Smith

rel Director Public Schools (and ex WHS School Captain); Mrs

Janet Forrester, representing Woolooware Auxiliary; Mrs

Michele Churi, President of our P&C;

Mr Craig Snudden Principal, Lilli Pilli Public School; and

Mr Jason Ezzy Principal Woolooware Public School (and ex

WHS School Prefect).

I’d like to thank Mr Fisher (Y12 Deputy Principal),

Mrs Hennessy and Mr Monahan (Y12 Year Advisors), for the

care and support they have taken to ensure our students have

learnt in a supportive environment, enabling them to do their

very best at school.

An excerpt from Principal’s speech:

This is a significant day for all of you because it marks the end

of 13 years of formal learning, and that learning is worth

acknowledging and worth celebrating. Not everyone completes

their schooling. You have worked hard to get here. You've done

a great job. Your parents and care givers are proud of your

achievement, as are your teachers and our whole school

community, that's why you see so many Principals here from

our local primary schools as well as our School Director.

We pride ourselves at Woolooware, in having instilled in you a

love of learning and strength to work hard for what you want to

achieve. Our 4 pillars tell of committing to academic success;

building respectful relationships, of developing yourself as a

whole person, and of having pride for self and school. Each

graduating year has its own characteristics. But what binds

each year, year after year are these core values. They will carry

you a long way in life and always give you a link to our

wonderful school. Most importantly

I have been impressed by your diligence towards your studies,

and the way in which you have balanced being involved in all

aspects of school life. Your commitment to striving for

excellence in all areas is something that your year will be

remembered for.

Our school captains, Deirdre and Matthew along with our Vice

Captains, Hannah and Yibeltal our SRC Presidents Amy and

Liam have also been great role models and outstanding young

leaders across our school community.

When you go out into the world, I want you to trust yourself and

all that you have learnt here, that will keep you in good stead as

you continue to learn and grow throughout your life.

On this day I want you to think about WHO you will be and how

you will lead your life. I want you to think about having a

purpose in your life. You have the power to make a difference -

a difference to your own life, to the life of those around you and

some of you may even make a difference to masses of people.

We have students who graduated from Woolooware High just

like you who have gone on to become research scientists like

Dr Michelle James; economists like Glenn Stevens the 7th

Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia; teachers like your

Year Advisor Mr Monahan, the current Principal of

Woolooware Public School Mr Ezzy and our rel. Director

Public Schools Mr Smith; sporting greats like

Todd Woodbridge, and other students who own local

businesses, work in hospitality, do voluntary work to support

non for profit organizations. The future is yours!

Year 12 no matter what you do, go into the world knowing that

you can make a difference to someone else. Believe in who you

are and do the things that make you proud of who you are.

Inspire others by what you do.

Graduation is an exciting time. It's both an ending and a

beginning. It's warm memories of the past and big dreams for

the future. On behalf of the whole school community year 12, I

wish you good health, happiness and great HSC results. Believe

in yourselves, dream big, live a purposeful life and strive for

excellence at every opportunity.

Good luck Year 12.

YEAR 11

Recently Kelas 11 went on the adventure of a life-

time, into the unknown, Randwick, to watch the

popular new Indonesian film ‘Ada Apa Dengan

Cinta 2’ (‘What's up with love 2?’ for all the non

Indonesians.)

We arrived in Randwick at around 5pm, and our

Indonesian night began, starting with an elegant

meal at Java Restaurant. Cheap meals with banging

flavour, Java provided the goods, only adding to the

excitement of our night.

After our delicious meal we arrived at the theatre,

and the special Sydney screening of the film began.

The movie brought many ups, downs, laughs, tears

and exciting scenes, and the icing on the cake was

having a Q and A session afterwards with some of

the cast, including the star, Nicholas Saputra. With

questions answered and hearts overflowing with

emotions we headed for home.

What we learnt:

Never buy drinks with words that you do not

understand or you may be drinking liquorice

flavoured Pepsi

The WHS Cheer Team competed in the NSW State Cheer

Championships on Sunday, 28 August at Homebush State

Sports Centre. The team has been training hard in the

lead-up to this event with our coach Laura from Shire Elite

Cheer at Taren Point.

The team competed in the High School Level 1

Division against other government, Catholic and

private schools. The girls performed very well, hitting all

their stunts and nailing their pyramid. They

tumbled well and the whole routine looked clean. It was

the first time the team have performed their

routine on a full competition floor and they adapted well to

the bigger space. The atmosphere in the

competition hall was amazing and the girls (and the

audience!) enjoyed every moment of their

performance.

Woolooware was awarded 2nd place, just behind

Mackellar Girls High School. A fantastic result! Our next

competition is Scholastic Nationals on Saturday,

22 October.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AWARDS

The Partners in Learning Parent Feedback Survey

Our school will also be participating in the Partners

in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell

Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and

parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey

asks parents and carers questions about different

factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing

and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand

parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s

experience at school. These include: communication

between parents/carers and staff, activities and

practices at home and parent/carer views on the

school's support of learning and behaviour. This

valuable feedback will help our school make practical

improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on

public computers. The survey will typically take 15

minutes or less to complete and is completely

confidential. The parent survey will be conducted

between 1 September and 21 October. Participating in

the survey is entirely voluntary; however, your

responses are very much appreciated.

The Parent Survey can now be accessed by the

SOFTBALL & BASEBALL UPDATE

replay of last year’s grand final with Hunter Sports

High. Flashback to 2015: the mighty Whales were

behind in the closing stages of the game; we were

fielding but quickly managed to shut them down for

the extra innings to be played… Woolooware take the

lead and claim their first CHS Softball gold medal!

But this year the tables were turned. It was like

something out of movie. Things looking good – up by

two runs and then a reversal of fortune! They forced

us to play the extra innings! First batter, bottom of

their order, swiftly dismissed. Top of the order, big

hitters, ball in play… Breathe again! It was over.

Woolooware held on like the champions we are. Final

score 3-2. The mighty Whales are the NSW CHS

Softball Champions for a magnificent second year!

Many thanks to all of our fantastic parents, especially

Mel Outten and Jacqui Willems for scoring,

Braden Moon for his coaching, and Gail Lanaghan

for personally escorting the perpetual trophy up the

highway (a story in itself)… It is always sad to

farewell our Year 12 boys: this year we say goodbye

to Blake (our star baseball pitcher),

Tristan (all round good guy /utility player), Ryan

(nice cover-drive!), and Shaun (do you really need to

graduate?). At this stage, Sam (‘athlete’) Year 11 is

also eying off an apprenticeship, so we wish him all

the best as well! The truly amazing part is that these

boys are leaving Woolooware with not one, but

THREE CHS GOLD MEDALS!

BASEBALL / SOFTBALL COORDINATOR

STATE CHAMPIONS AGAIN!

Softball and baseball have now wound up for 2016.

Our last game for baseball in the round of 16 was

against Figtree High. While the game started tightly

with the score quite even for a few innings, Figtree

had more luck with the bat and came home strongly

to win, so unfortunately that’s it for us this year.

Still, we must embrace the positive – it is a fantastic

effort to place in the top 16 schools in the state.

Well done boys!

But softball is a different story…… Going

through to the top 16 as Sydney East Champs and

defending STATE CHAMPIONS was a daunting

prospect. This year the team was a little less

experienced, and we were down Jake (international

commitments, of course… ), but we still possessed

our (not so secret) weapon, Shaun, ‘The

Terminator’ , who thankfully had just returned from

playing World championships himself.

In the two day finals tournament for softball, the

first day establishes the final four. Our first game

was against Quakers Hill. The score was even at nil

for the first couple of innings; while we had Shaun,

they also had a strong pitcher who was making his

mark. But the hits came. First game won 8-1 and

into the last 8. Game 2 saw us play Canobolas High

from the west. Even Shaun was worried about this

pitcher… No problem. Home run frenzy! 12-1. We

had made the final 4!

The semi-final dragged up our old nemesis,

Camden High, whose name just about covers half

the trophy! They had lost a few of their older boys

from last year but then again, so had we… A great

win 6-2 and into the grand final! This ended up a

YEAR 12 VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION

On Tuesday, 30 August, the school community

were out to support our Year 12 Visual Arts

students who exhibited their body of work. The

body of work is the culmination of a year’s

planning and experimentation, to present the best

that they can do in their chosen expressive form.

Expressive forms this year included: drawing,

painting, photography, video, textiles and fibre,

sculpture and design.

Some students will go on to study Visual Arts,

design, photography or video at a tertiary level, for

others it will be the only artwork they ever make.

They have simply used something they are good at

to get a good ATAR. Either way, I am incredibly

proud of their achievements. The body of work is

no easy task. It is a challenge…. and the class of

2016 have certainly succeeded!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Mrs Kathryn Mooyman

Teacher - TAS Home Economics

Tell us about your teaching career.

I grew up in the eastern suburbs of Sydney and attended

Maroubra Junction Primary School. For my secondary educa-

tion I was accepted to Sydney Girls High School at Moore

Park. After this I did a Bachelor of Education Degree at Sydney

University. I was fortunate to be placed in a permanent teach-

ing position in my first year out which was the Bicentennial

Year of 1988. I taught at Moorefield Girls High (MGHS) at

Kogarah until 2005 when I then left to take up the position of

relieving Vocational Education Consultant at Arncliffe Region-

al Office. While at MGHS I was a Year Adviser and wrote

some courses that were approved for delivery in schools by the

Board of Studies. One of these was Hospitality. This formed

the basis for the start of Vocational Education and Training

(V.E.T.) in schools and we piloted the course in 1994. I went

on to coordinate V.E.T. in the school and we delivered 5 frame-

works at MGHS. I had put in for a transfer (as we bought a

home in the Shire) and was granted a position at Woolooware

High School where I have been since. I have also done HSC

marking and have worked for the BOSTES and Dept. of Educa-

tion on special projects over the years.

What did you do in class this week that was really

interesting?

I have just finished an apparel unit with Year 9 Textiles Tech-

nology and now we are starting on Textile Art. This is a great

unit where students get to experiment with a range of

techniques such as embroidery (hand and machine), tie dyeing

and new techniques such as using painting sticks and

specialised textile pencils and markers to create works of art on

fabric. I also booked a fashion drawing workshop for the class

run by the Whitehouse School of Design for Term 4 and the

students were really excited.

In Year 11 DAT we analysed the impact of emerging

technologies on society and the environment. 3-D printing and

how the Apple Company (amongst others) has revolutionised

the world we live in. There was much discussion.

I think the nicest part of the week is when a lot of boys in my

Year 8 Technology class finished making their shorts! They

were really proud of their efforts and so was I.

Tell us something about yourself that we may not know

I love comedy and musical theatre. I recently saw Fawlty

Towers Live and loved it! I used to sing and act in shows in

high school and at Uni. I played piano and clarinet and

performed in bands and orchestras. I love travel, especially to

tropical destinations. I have two cats, Rex and Belle which are

both adopted from the RSPCA. I adore funny cat videos. They

are always good for a laugh!

Mr Bill Salzmann

Teacher - Mathematics

Tell us about your teaching career.

I started my teaching career at Punchbowl Boys

High in 1983. It was a unique school and I certainly

met a lot of interesting characters. From there I went

to Peakhurst High which was very enjoyable and

then I moved to Woolooware HS which has been a

great school.

What did you do in class this week that was really

interesting?

Apart from normal Maths lessons which are always

interesting, I took part in the PDHPE interview task.

The students had to play the role of applying for a

job and the staff conducted the job interview. It was

very interesting to see the students in a different light

and I was impressed with how well they expressed

themselves.

Tell us something about yourself that we may not

know

I have twice taken a year off school to stay home and

look after my children when my wife had to return to

work. Being a house husband was a real experience.

It allowed me to form a close relationship with my

children and also to improve my cooking skills.

I love all sports and am quite competitive (just ask

the Maths Faculty). When I retire I would love to

travel more and hopefully visit America and watch

the final round of a US Masters Golf Tournament

live. Although I’ve come close I have never had a

hole in one at golf, so I would love to achieve that

one day.

Year 8 History students

viewed a Medieval Europe

presentation at school. The

presentation went over

many aspects in Medieval

life, particularly knights

and weaponry. Students

were able to have a look at

the artefacts on display and

even try on some armour!

It was a great day and all

students were able to come to class the following

lesson with new information and a greater

understanding of medieval life!

On Monday, 29 August,

all of Year 10 and Year

12 Modern History went

to the Sydney Jewish

Museum as part of their

course. For Year 10

studying the Holocaust,

they listened to a

presentation and testimony from a Holocaust

survivor as well as participating in a tour of the

museums artefacts. All testimonies were very

insightful and students as well as teachers were

thoroughly engaged with these stories and the

horrific experiences they endured.

For Year 12 studying Leni Riefenstahl and

Germany, the students underwent a targeted lecture

about Leni Riefenstahl and the role she played as a

Nazi cinematographer, as well as a tour through the

Jewish Museum artefacts. All students represented

Woolooware High school very well, and most came

away with new information and a differing

perspective into the Holocaust from a survivor’s

rendang (Sumatran beef curry), ayam goreng (fried

chicken), ikan asam manis (Indonesian style sweet

and sour fish) and cumi kecap Jawa (crispy

calamari in sweet soy sauce).

For dessert we tried es cendol, which is pandan

flavoured rice pudding in palm sugar, caramel

coconut cream and shaved ice. There was mixed

opinion on this dessert, especially about it’s bright

green jelly ‘worms’! However, most students were

adventurous and tasted and enjoyed each dish.

THANKYOU

Today Beau is thriving and just needs yearly

check-ups. If you would like to donate blood over the

next week that would be amazing. I’m sure there is

someone out there who needs that blood today.

Thank-you Woolooware High your kindness and

support will never be forgotten.

To All the Staff and Students,

This Saturday marks one year when my little four

month old boy had open heart surgery. It was one

of the scariest times I’ve ever gone through.

However, thanks to your fundraising and kind

words of support from staff and students it made it

a little easier to get through this tough time. The

money raised by the school and my own fundraising

was just over $4,000.00 this money contributed to

building a ‘happy garden’ at the hospital. A

beautiful place where sick children can escape the

wards and relax.

To my knowledge 24 people

donated blood in honour on Beau. Which was

amazing as Beau needed three blood transfusions

during his operation which lasted seven hours.
