Scholarship for Masters project: GIS database of Waiheke environment and impacts Project Forever Waiheke (PFW) is offering a $5,000 scholarship to support a Masters project in 2019 with the aim of creating a GIS structure to contain data concerning the uses and habitats of Waiheke Island's terrestrial and marine environments. It is intended that the database will serve as the starting point for ongoing monitoring. PFW has close contact with the Waiheke Local Board and aims to develop sustainable community and tourism strategy and monitor tourism impacts on the island, under the umbrella of United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories programme, “INSTO”. Applicants will have to demonstrate that they have a project proposal, accepted by a supervisor, that falls within the broad domain of PFW’s interests [see https://www.foreverwaiheke.com/]. In addition to the monetary award, PFW will arrange free ferry travel to and from Auckland, accommodation and transport on Waiheke, as well as support with accessing relevant organisations and individuals who can support the project. A University of Auckland student undertaking the envisaged research may also apply to the Faculty of Science Sustainability Network for an additional award of up to $2,000 for living costs. [The closing date for current round of Sustainability Network awards is 5 November 2018: see http://www.science.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/our-faculty-3/sustainability- network/research-awards-for-current-students.html] There is no closing date for applications for this scholarship and PFW reserves the right to award the scholarship for any specific project that satisfies its criteria.
