Presenters
TOMAS ANDERSEN, Educational Technologist
Tomas Andersen has taught in the elementary setting since 2003, mostly in
grades 4 and 5, but he has experience with small groups in grades K-6 as well. He
grew up and began his teaching career in Cordova, Alaska after finishing his
degree at the University of Idaho in 2002. Within the District, he began at Goose
Bay Elementary before transferring to Knik Elementary. He has been with the
Office of Instruction for 2 years. He enjoys being a part of the innovation in the
MSBSD. He is responsible for managing MobyMax, Think Central, Lexia, Read
Naturally Live, and working with the Digital First Responders.
JANIS BISHOP, Advisory Teacher
Janis Bishop received her Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education
from Northeastern State College, and her Masters of Education with a K-12
Reading Specialist Certification from Northeastern State University. She has been
an educator since 1973, beginning her teaching career in Oklahoma as a first
grade and fifth grade teacher and then as a Reading Specialist with the Right to
Read program. In her Alaskan career, she has taught kindergarten, first, fifth, and
multi-age grades, advised grades K-12, and now serves parents and students in
grades K-3 at Mat-Su Central School. She currently is teaching a kindergarten
parent class based on Sonday 1, entitled Coffee, Tea and ABC.
JEFFREY BLACKBURN, Educational Technologist
Jeffrey Blackburn is an Educational Technologist in the Office of Instruction. He
has been with the District for 10 years and taught middle school Math, Computer
Programming, and Robotics at Wasilla Middle School and Mat-Su Central. He is a
strong advocate of using technology to increase student learning and works to
integrate the 4 Cs (Creativity, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Communication)
into all of his trainings. His primary responsibilities are teacher trainings, Clever
Integrations, ClassFlow and classroom teacher support.
CHRISTINE DUFFY, Educational Technologist
Christine Duffy is an Educational Technologist and was a secondary special
education classroom teacher before moving to the District Office. She piloted a
Google Classroom at Colony High School and taught READ 180 for four years.
She is the District Coordinator for READ 180, MATH 180, and System 44
intervention programs. She also supports teachers using software-based
intervention programs such as ALEKS, MobyMax, and Lexia. She provides
Integrated Classroom professional development for Special Education teachers,
as well as Blended and OneNote training.
VICTORIA FLINT, Educational Technologist
Victoria Flint works with the Office of Instruction for the MSBSD. She has been in
education for ten years, working as an interventionist, Literacy Coach, and
Instructional Coach. As a coach, she has supported teachers with Growth
Mindset, RTI (behavior and academic), PBIS, CHAMPS, Tough Kid Toolkit &
Tough Kid Parent Book, Teaching Love and Logic, Capturing Kids Hearts, Teach
Like a Champ, and Coaching Classroom Management. She has a Master’s degree
in both Elementary Reading and Literacy and Industrial/Organizational Psychology
(Coaching/Consulting).
TERI HADDELAND, Elementary Teacher
Teri Haddeland received her Bachelor of Arts in Education K-8 from Alaska Pacific
University and her Master of Education in Language and Literacy with a K-12
Reading Endorsement from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She has been
teaching for 16 years and currently works at Big Lake Elementary teaching in
grades 1-5 intervention. She focuses on small group reading and math instruction,
specifically, Tier 2 Journeys and Tier 3 GO Math! Throughout her career she has
taught 1st through 6th grades. Teri has served on both the math and ELA
curriculum writing teams and math/ELA program adoption teams. She has led two
GO Math! FLTs and served as the math coach in her building.
KAY HUXFORD, EL Case Manager
Kay Huxford holds master’s degrees in English and Applied Linguistics from
Portland State University, and holds professional educator licenses in English,
TESOL, and communications. She has worked for more than 25 years in the field of
education, including work as a teacher trainer and program leader, and has held
international positions in Germany, Siberia and China. She has been in Alaska for
three years, and is currently pursuing her degree in Education Administration and
Supervision.
JESSICA KAUFFMAN, Tanaina Elementary Teacher
Jessica Kauffman received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education K-8 from
the University of Alaska Anchorage and a master’s degree in Reading K-12 from
the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She taught 1st-4th grade on St. Paul Island for 14
years and has been teaching 3rd grade in the MSBSD for the past 5 years.
Throughout her career, she coached basketball and Native Youth Olympics,
helped develop and adopt a Social Emotional Learning program for the Pribilof
School District, sponsored student travel trips, and participated in Journeys Train
of Trainers to help implement Journeys within the MSBSD. She thrives on helping
others to organize the Journeys material to make it easily accessible weekly. She
has experience teaching the program whole group, as well as modifying it for all students within the
classroom. She is strong in integrating small group instruction and reading groups into daily routines,
integrating extension projects, using the weekly assessments to improve instruction, and using online
support and material with the Journeys program.
AMANDA MEISING, Shaw Elementary Teacher
Amanda received her Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education
and a Master’s of Curriculum and Instruction from Texas State University in San
Marcos, Texas. She has her English Second Language endorsement as well as
National Board Certification in Early Adolescence Language Arts. She has been an
educator for over 20 years with a focus on Elementary Education. Over her
career, she has taught Kindergarten through 5th grade, has been an ELL teacher
servicing several schools, Instructional Coach at Shaw Elementary, and currently
teaches 3rd grade at Shaw.
MARILEE NUFER, Instructional Coach
Marilee received her Elementary Education degree from Concordia University-
Portland and her Master’s of Teaching and Learning with an emphasis in English
Language Learners from University of Alaska-Anchorage. She has been an
elementary educator for over 35 years, teaching grades 1st through 4th, and has
spent the last 10 years as an Instructional Coach for MSBSD schools. Marilee loves
the challenge of translating assessment data into effective research-based practices to support students and teachers.
JILL SHOWMAN, English Teacher
Jill Showman is an English and Yearbook teacher at Wasilla High School. During her
tenure, she has taught a variety of classes, including Russian, English, World History
and ESL. She has experience teaching in a variety of settings, from college to
elementary school, in both urban and rural communities. Writing is one of her
passions and she believes that Step Up to Writing can help all students become
more proficient writers both in and out of the classroom.
RYDEEN STEVENS, Student Support Services Resource Specialist
Rydeen has taught Corrective Reading for several years to children with
significant emotional and learning disabilities. Through firsthand experience, she
knows this program works when taught to mastery. Her current role provides
many opportunities to practice and build new skills as a leader and a learner. She
is the Instructional Coach and RTI Specialist for Student Support Services, which
allows her to support individual teachers with academic and classroom
management strategies. She has attended professional development at a national
level to enhance her knowledge in RTI, Explicit Instruction, and Special Education
procedures and practices. Throughout the 10 years in this position, she has enjoyed working
collaboratively with several school RTI teams, Special Education teams, and Instructional Coaches to
develop effective academic strategies for the diverse student population in our District.

Description:
ALEKS is an adaptive, online math program that uses artificial intelligence and open-response
questioning to identify precisely what each student does and doesn't know. Through truly
individualized learning and assessment, ALEKS delivers a personalized learning path on the exact
topics each student is ready to learn. Teachers must come to this session with their teacher
account to set up their classes.
Blended Teaching
Date: Tuesday, August 7 and Wednesday, August 8

Description: This two-day training will explore the theme of ‘Blended Teaching' as it relates
to the MSBSD. Participants will work toward developing a plan to implement blended
structures and best practices in their classrooms and will work in site-based teams to develop a
culture of blended learning at their school. Participants will also work with “accountability
partners” and teams to ensure they are achieving their goals and receiving consistent and site-
based support. The final product will be a combination of a personal plan for blended learning
implementation as well as a road map for each team's school site.
CHAMPS Classroom Management

Description: Jump start your classroom management plan and vision for the new school year!
Participants will be provided a framework for planning each essential component of their
classroom and behavior management system. Designing a cohesive management plan will
provide a framework for consistently and positively facilitating a safe and equitable environment
for engaged learners. This will help to inform parents about classroom expectations and
procedures. This training will provide a format for teachers to create not only a vision, but
leave with a written plan for managing the classroom and student behavior.

Description: Provides an overview, rationale, and techniques to effectively implement
Corrective Reading curriculum through a series of collaborative group activities, practice, and
discussions. This will not be an all-day lecture; please come prepared to participate, rehearse,
and share ideas.

Description: Early Interventions in Reading (EIR) provides Tier 2 intervention lessons that
build mastery of essential skills through explicit, systematic instruction in five critical strands: phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, word recognition and spelling, fluency, and
comprehension. This early intervention program provides the significant increase in the
intensity of instruction that low-level readers need to prevent reading difficulties and meet
grade-level expectations. EIR also provides vocabulary and concept instruction for English and
struggling language learners. Participants taking this training will gain the content and technology
skills needed to teach this highly effective intervention program for Kindergarten through 2nd
grade. Please bring the Level A Teacher Edition for each of the grades you will be teaching.
Fluency Practice with Read Naturally Live and Six-Minute Solution

Description: In order to understand what is read, children must be able to read fluently, with
speed, accuracy, and proper expression, both aloud and silently, in order to meet the reading
demands of their grade level. The research-based, Read Naturally Live program and the Six-
Minute Solution program provide effective and motivating repeated-reading fluency practice
with immediate student feedback and ongoing assessment. The peer-to-peer interactions of Six-
Minute Solution can be used with a small group or a whole class while Read Naturally Live is an
individual web-based program.
GO Math! K-5 Date: Wednesday, August 8

Description: This session is intended for new teachers or new to grade level teachers to
receive an overview of GO Math! We will review the curriculum and explain the technology
components of the program. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers during the
training to support your individual needs for successful GO Math! implementation.
Journeys with Think Central

Description: In this interactive professional learning course, participants engage in a variety of
hands-on experiences to learn about Journeys organization, design, and support resources.
Through direct instruction, guided practice, and cooperative exploration, participants will
experience the program's resources both from a student and teacher perspective. The goal is
to build deeper understanding and confidence to begin implementing Journeys in their
respective learning environments.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
Enrich daily instruction by applying knowledge of Journeys organization and pedagogy
Support differentiation, assessment, and effective whole and small group instruction
using Journeys resources and instructional tools

Description: MATH 180 uses teacher-facilitated instruction, blended with adaptive
technology, which guides the student along a personalized learning path that is tailored to
individual needs. MATH 180 instruction uses the concrete-pictorial-abstract approach to build
students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics.
READ 180 Universal with System 44

Description: READ 180 Universal is the leading blended learning intervention program
building reading comprehension, academic vocabulary, and writing skills for struggling students.
Learn how to use and implement the READ 180 and System 44 programs, which programs are
approved Tier 2 interventions. System 44 is a comprehensive system that supports students in
developing foundational reading and writing skills and guides teachers on a clear instructional
path. System 44 includes:
personalized learning path in phonics
decoding, word recognition, and writing
explicit instruction in close reading and comprehension
It allows anytime/anywhere access to data and instruction planning, and tools for multi-tiered
systems of support and IEPs.

Description: As an online literacy tool intended to support personalized learning needs and
skills, Read&Write for Google Chrome is able to support and develop vocabulary, fluency, and
comprehension skills, individually or through collaborative groups. Topics will include basic
toolbar demonstrations, peer collaboration, and installation support. Participants should be
familiar with Google G Suite tools.
Reading Mastery Signatures Edition Date: Friday, August 10

Description: Provides teachers with an overview of the new Signatures Edition, rationale, and
techniques to effectively implement Reading Mastery Signatures or Language for Thinking and

REWARDS®

Description: The REWARDS® family of reading and writing intervention materials is
specifically designed for struggling adolescent learners. Educators nationwide have embraced
REWARDS® as a powerful short-term intervention that results in long-term literacy
achievement. The program supports any core curriculum and offers flexible implementation
options. The REWARDS® program is a research-based and validated reading and writing
program. This training will provide a program overview with a focus on pre-assessment,
introduction to materials and resources, and practice with the first and largest section of the
curriculum. Teachers who then choose to take the REWARDS® program into their classrooms
will select a best date for a second session (about 4 weeks into program implementation) to
address challenges, provide support, practice with the second and smaller section of materials,
and discuss data collection.

Description: Revitalize RTI in your classroom with Silverback. As a data merging platform,
Silverback supports personalized learning by enabling the documentation of academic and
behavior interventions for all of our students, extensions and remediation. Basic topics will
include: login, entering notes or contacts, retrieving student data, documentation of tiered
services and interventions, reports, and progress monitoring.

Audience: Elementary Tier 2 Intervention
Description: This training is intended for teachers who are new to or need a refresher in
Sonday System 1. Sonday System 1 offers structured, systematic, multisensory reading
interventions for beginning readers through third grade. Each level uses proven Orton-
Gillingham methods to provide effective intervention in small group settings. Participants need
to bring the Sonday System 1 kit which is available at their school.

Description: Do you need a refresher and a new look at Step Up to Writing? Have you been
trained, have the resources, but haven’t had the time to implement the Step Up to Writing
Strategies in your classroom? Implementing Step Up to Writing in every grade helps establishes
a common writing language across grade levels and content areas. Highlights include:
Review specific types of writing emphasized in state standards: informative/explanatory,
argument, and narrative writing
Create specific writing lessons that align with Journeys and identify strategies for
differentiation to ensure instruction will meet individual student needs
Explicit focus is placed on supporting students in producing organized, clear, and
coherent writing
Step up to Writing for English Instructors Date: Thursday, August 9

Description: Provides a framework for teachers to help students with writing strategies that
will cultivate higher-order thinking and better responses to complex problems. The Step Up to
Writing strategies are built to support cross-curricular standards in the areas of writing,
vocabulary, language, reading, and speaking & listening. This one-day workshop will focus on
prompt writing, getting students more engaged in writing, and getting past the 5 Paragraph
Essay. This workshop can be taken alone or with SUTW with Collections on Friday, August 10.

Description: This one-day workshop will focus on using the Step Up to Writing strategies and
incorporating them in the MSBSD English Curriculum for grades 6-12 . This is not a refresher
course, but rather the focus will be integrating strategies to better support the texts we are
currently using in our classrooms. Please bring the Collections textbook, supplemental texts and
any SUTW materials you have. This workshop can be taken alone or with SUTW for English
Instructors on Thursday, August 9.

Description: TransMath is a comprehensive mathematics Tier 3 intervention curriculum that
teaches a balanced approach of computational skills and problem-solving applications for
students in grades 6-10. TransMath uses a blend of daily instruction, assessments, and online
tools which allow the teacher to differentiate instruction and manage assessment data.
