City of Sumner newSletter June 2007--Summer funiSSue 49

I love going to Sumner’s parks, especially in the summer. In so many cities,

residents don’t use the parks and it’s a shame. Not so in Sumner. Here, when

the weather is nice, we don’t just fence ourselves into our own backyards--we

go to the park. Whether we go to listen to music in Heritage Park, celebrate a

birthday in Loyalty Park or play in Siebenthaler, we see Sumner in our parks.

Now, we have a new park. As a resident of the east side of town, I’m cheering

loudly with you now that this area shares our City’s outstanding park system.

And what a park it is! With views of the mountain, new picnic facilities, play-

ground equipment and beautiful mosaic artwork, Rainier View Park is a great

place. And, like the other parks, this one is ours too. You, the citizens, had a

big hand in designing the park, building the park, and, of course, paying for the

park. So, I hope like all the others, you’ll use this park day in and day out to

celebrate the magic of ordinary summer days.

So while summer is still technically a set amount of days between June and Sep-

tember, I’d say our summer just got bigger because we get one more beautiful

place to enjoy it. See you at Rainier View...!

Summer Just Got “Bigger” and Better

Summer

Fun edition!

Sometimes, you see them so often that

you forget to look at the flags that fly

proudly throughout the city. As we

approach the 4th of July, it’s a great

time to take a moment and look up at

our flags, many of which are donated

by citizens.

The flagpole at City Hall was pur-

chased by Shell Oil Co. in honor of

Monty Stromburg, long-time Coun-

cilman and Shell Oil dealer. And, a

citizen recently donated money for a

flagpole at the entrance sign on Traffic

Avenue.

The Sumner Rotary Club purchases

the flag every year for the Daffodil

Valley Sports Complex and the Sum-

ner VFW Post pays for and raises the

US flag and MIA / POW Flag at the

Cemetery for every Memorial Day.

So, next time you see the Stars and

Stripes waving in the breeze, say thank

you to those who made it happen.

Flags Wave Proudly

Artists put the finishing touches on the park’s central medallion.

Go right from Sumner to the Mariners’ game with Sound Transit’s Home Run Service. When a weekend game starts at 1:05 pm, the Sounder train will pick you up in Sumner at 11:17 am and drop you off near Safeco Field at noon. To come home, the train departs Seattle’s King Street Station 30 min-utes after the game ends.

Round-trip fare is $8.50 for adults, $6 for ages 6-18 and $4 for ages 65 and up. For more information, visit www.soundtransit.org.

Join the Sumner Police Department in spending a night out with your neigh-bors. Have dinner at the barbecue while meeting McGruff the Crime Dog® and members of the Sumner Police Department. Not only will you have a fun time, but just by participat-ing, you help increase our commu-nity’s safety. Plus, the Old Cannery is providing train rides and Windmill Gardens and McLendon’s Hardware will also be present, with rumors of raffles and prizes!

Construction work on northbound I-5 between Spokane Street and I-90 in Seattle is expected to require around-the-clock lane closures August 10-29. The closures will have significant effects on traffic. When making travel plans, be aware. We also anticipate the Sounder trains to be much busier during this construction time.

Summer Youth Pass offers Great deal

As always, it’s the best deal for getting around: $36 for unlimited local rides all summer long. The Summer Youth Pass is available at Pierce Transit’s e-store and all PT pass outlets.

582 Will now Wait The 582 bus now has trips that link Sounder from the Sumner Station with the Bonney Lake Park and Ride. On these runs, the bus will wait for the train--even if it’s late--before shuttling passengers up the hill. Tell your fel-low commuters from the Plateau about this great way to save even more gas and avoid the parking struggle!

Visiting mount rainier After the FloodIn Sumner, Mount Rainier presides over us all, especially on sunny days. Some of us can even see “The Mountain” from our windows. The park was hit hard this winter. Because of that, we may hesitate to visit, but this is actually a great summer to go. Here are some ideas for a visit...or two.

Head to the ParkWhile a lot of roads and trails are closed, a lot are open! Go to the National Park Service web site at www.nps.gov/mora for the latest news on what trails and roads are open.

Coffee and a CarpoolIf you have guests or friends coming from Seattle, Bellevue or Tacoma, encourage them to meet in Sumner for

breakfast and combine vehicles to go up the mountain. You’ll save on gas, reduce congestion and have a tasty start to your day!

Visit a neighborMany fear this will be a slow year for neighboring towns that depend on Mount Rainier’s tourists. So, take a day trip to communities like Wilkeson and Eatonville for a fun visit.

Excellent question! I suggest going to one or more of Tacoma’s museums. Odds are, you haven’t been since Tacoma became quite a city for museums.

At the Washington State History Museum, the Great Hall of History takes you across the state and through time--my favorite was going into Roslyn Mine No. 3.

Tacoma Art Museum gives you a distinctly Northwest experience of art. I enjoyed Sparkle Then Fade, an exhibit through Sept. 3, that uses light as metaphor!

Then, it’s just a short walk to the Museum of Glass. You can enjoy the work of world-renowned contempo-rary artists. I really liked the hot shop; since my doctorate doesn’t include glass, I settled to watch professional artists at work.

While these three museums, all next door to each other, can fill a day or two...or three, there are a few others in Tacoma. My favorite is the of-ten overlooked (and free!) Karpeles Manuscript Museum, just across from Wright Park at 407 South G St. It might not be flashy, but it houses some of the major documents that have shaped our world. Then, you cross the street to the W.W. Seymour Botani-cal Conservatory (also free) to enjoy flower gardens even on a rainy day!

You can e-mail Dr. Sumner at [email protected].
