Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Are you someone or do you know someone who has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? Perhaps you or a person you know was baptized Catholic, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. RCIA offers an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about the Catholic faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist during the Easter season. You are wel-come to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. For information please contact: Amy Davis, Director of Religious Education, at 330-833-6898.

Festival Update: Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 and the strict guidelines set by the CDC and Governor DeWine, we will not be able to have our festival this year. However, we will still be drawing for the car raffle! Tickets are still available in the Narthex and in the rectory; you can either purchase them or take them to sell. Tickets need to be returned to Jennifer in the rectory no later than Wednesday, September 9th in order to participate. The drawing will take place on Friday, September 11th and the winner will be contacted via phone. If you are able to buy or sell some tickets, please be sure to pick some up. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Please join us for this beautiful prayer.

Divine Mercy Chaplet St. Barbara parish and the Knights of Columbus Council 554 will restart our monthly Divine Mercy Chaplet at St. Barbara’s Church on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 9:45 A.M. following the 9:00 A.M. Mass. The Chaplet for August will be on the 25th at 9:45 A.M. during Eucharistic Adora-tion . The message of The Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us — all of us. And, he wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy.

O GOD, LET ALL THE NATIONS PRAISE YOU! (PSALM 67:4)

Dear Friends: Psalm 67 was a psalm of thanksgiving for the harvest which expressed the ever-widening reach of God’s blessings from the house of Israel to all the nations, and finally to the ends of the earth. Our Scriptures for today teach us a lesson that God nudges us to go outside of our comfort zone. The tent of God’s love is pretty wide. For some reason I am reminded of a book by J.B. Phillips: “Your God is Too Small.” While I never read the book, I read a summary that indicates that we need a much broader concept of God. Many times we operate out of outmoded concepts of God that constantly need to be ex-panded. How do we relate to God in a postmodern, technological world that is moving at such a fast pace? Each Sunday in the Nicene Creed we profess that the Church we belong to is “one, holy, catholic and apostolic.” What does the word Catholic mean? If you check the Catechism of the Catholic Church #830 and on, we see that the Church is “catholic,” meaning universal or as it states: “according to the totality” or “keeping with the whole.” The Church is catholic because Christ is present in her with the means of salvation. The Church is also catholic because she has been sent on a mis-sion by Christ to the whole of the human race.

So what can we learn from today’s gospel where the Canaanite woman asks Jesus to cure her daughter. Despite the insis-tence of the disciples to send her away and Jesus’ comment about being sent only to the lost sheep of Israel, the woman per-sists in her plea for mercy. Because of the power of a mother’s love, there was a monumental shift in Jesus’ self-understanding and the scope of his mission. Now, all the nations were invited to share in the blessings of God’s love. Even St. Paul could see that Israel’s rejection of Christ served as the “reconciliation of the world.”

We are invited this month to especially pray for respect for all peoples, cultures and religions. The violence that has spread throughout our country this summer unmasks the growing cancer of violence and hatred that we face as a Nation. We are slowly recovering from the violence that we have seen around our country and many people are working together to build a new future. While remaining true to our Catholic roots, we pray for renewed vision to see Christ in all we meet to-day.

Love and blessings, Fr. Brian
