Message from the President

I am honored to serve you as the President of the South Bay/Long Beach Society of

Health-System Pharmacists (SBLBSHP) for 2013. As you may know, at the end of

last year while I was President-Elect for the chapter, I moved to Northern

California to take a new job opportunity. I have been carrying out my presidential

duties from 400 miles away and leading the monthly Board of Directors (BOD)

meetings via teleconference. This would not be possible without the assistance of

Immediate Past-President Lisa Gunther Lum, who has helped in so many ways,

from printing out the agendas to clarifying what people are saying when I can’t

make it out over the phone!

SBLB kicked off the year with our annual Night With Industry and Installation

Banquet at the Reef Restaurant in Long Beach. The theme was "Cruising with the

Pharmacists: A Captain's Ball on a Tropical Island Cruise." During the evening,

CSHP President Steve Gray presided over the Installation Ceremony of the 2013

SBLB Chapter Officers, and Peter Ambrose presented the Kelly Hales Memorial

Pharmacist of the Year Award to Diana Hendel, PharmD, CEO of Long Beach

Memorial Medical Center, Community Hospital Long Beach, and Miller Children's

Hospital Long Beach.

Since then, there has been a flurry of SBLB activity. Our Clinical Affairs Chairs,

William Reeve, Lisa Gunther Lum, Judith Nakao, and Rosalin Preechakul,

have been working hard to put together Leadership Breakfasts this year. We have

already had one Leadership Breakfast that was held on March 1, 2013, with Darryl

Rich, PharmD, MBA, FASHP speaking on the Top 10 ISMP Medication Safety

Alert Issues. I am extremely excited to report that Senator Ed Hernandez, Chair

of the Senate Health Committee, will be the speaker for our next Leadership

Breakfast on June 7, 2013! Save the date and stay tuned for more information.

I strongly encourage you to attend California Pharmacy Legislative Day on April

16th! It is not too late to sign up. John Gray has been doing phenomenal work as

our chapter’s Legal Affairs Chair, presenting legal updates during the BOD meet-

ings, providing feedback to CSHP's Legislative and Regulatory Analyst Jonathan

Nelson, and organizing individuals to meet face-to-face with local legislators for

grassroots advocacy. This year, John and Josin James are being sponsored by our

chapter to attend Legislative Day. SBLB started sponsoring individuals to attend

Legislative Day last year and was recently recognized by CSHP for this practice.

Other chapters have been encouraged to follow our example.

South Bay/Long Beach Receives

2012 Chapter of Distinction Award By Doris Kao, President

CSHP recognizes regional chapters that have excelled in various areas, i.e.,

financial, business processes, growth, and member satisfaction. Chapters that have

met at least 80% of the criteria are granted the Chapter of Distinction Award during

the following calendar year, and are recognized in the InfoSource and on the CSHP

website. I'm pleased to report that the South Bay/Long Beach (SBLB) chapter

achieved almost 100% of the criteria and has been honored with the 2012 Chapter

of Distinction Award by the CSHP Board of Directors!

Doris Kao attended the CSHP Affiliate Chapter Presidents' Meeting on February

23, 2013 at the CSHP headquarters in Sacramento, and, on behalf of the chapter,

received the award certificate from CSHP President Steve Gray.

The chapter will be using the 2012 CSHP Chapter of Distinction Logo on all our

materials.

Thank you and congratulations to our members and the 2012 SBLB Board of

Directors for this achievement!

“Attend California

Pharmacy

Legislative Day on

April 16th!”

Message from President (continued)

Dan Bauman and Angela Jeong, our Educational Affairs/Industry Relations Co-Chairs,

have been putting together great educational dinners each month. In addition, we have

three accredited continuing education sessions of Western States Conference resident

presentations coming up, with four residents presenting at each session! Save the dates for

April 30, May 2, and May 9, 2013. Social Chair Cindy Odegard is cooking up some fun

social activities for this year, including another Wine Tasting and CE event that received

rave reviews by those who attended last year. Public Relations Chair Jenny Hu will be

leading a SBLB team to participate in the 20th Annual EIF Revlon Run/Walk for Women

on May 11, 2013. Sign up for the walk, or join us by making a pledge or donation on

behalf of the SBLB team!

I want to thank everyone on the Board of Directors for all their hard work. I hope that our

members are taking advantage of all these activities and benefits of membership. SBLB is

an awesome chapter - I am so proud to be part of it!

Night with Industry/Installation Banquet 2013 By Lisa Lum, Immediate Past President

On Saturday, January 26, the installation of our 2013 Officers and Board Members was held at the

Reef restaurant in Long Beach. This year’s theme was “Cruising with the Pharmacists: A Captain’s

Ball on a Tropical Island Cruise” and the room was decorated to appear to be a tropical cruise.

The Night with Industry started with displays by 25 pharmaceutical vendors. The installation

ceremony was performed by our distinguished CSHP President, Steve Gray. The program was

well attended by about 50 SBLB members and a fun time was had by all.

Legislation Updates:

Support SB 493!

By John Gray, Legal Affairs Chair

On March 13, California State Senator Ed Hernandez intro-

duced legislation in the form of SB 493 to help address the

current shortage of primary care providers within the State.

The shortage of primary care providers is expected to continue

to grow when the Medi-Cal program expands next year. The

bill aims to recognize pharmacists as health care providers and

to fully utilize pharmacists’ knowledge and skills to provide

direct patient care services. The official language of SB 493

can be found here: http://leginfo.ca.gov/pub/13-14/bill/sen/

sb_0451-0500/sb_493_bill_20130401_amended_sen_v98.pdf

This bill is a golden opportunity to enhance the care of patients

across the state by improving access to qualified health care

providers. To get this bill passed, CSHP has asked for the local

chapters’ help in a couple of ways:

1. To identify local “strike teams” that can be mobilized to

speak with key legislators over the coming months.

Several individuals from the SBLBSHP chapter have

expressed interest in speaking with their elected offi-

cials; if you are interested, please let John Gray know.

2. To consider donating to the Pharmacy Professionals of

California Political Action Committee (PPC-PAC). The

PPC-PAC ensures that pharmacists have a voice in

Sacramento to advocate on behalf of our profession (and

ultimately our patients). In light of the critical nature of

passing SB 493, the SBLBSHP will match chapter

members’ donations (up to $500). More

information on the PPC-PAC and the donation form can

be found at the following URL: http://www.cshp.org/

ppc-pac. Regular updates on PPC-PAC donations will

be provided in upcoming newsletters.

Revlon Run/Walk for Women

By Jenny Hu, Public Relations Chair

Join our chapter’s team in the 20th Annual EIF Revlon

Run/Walk for Women on May 11, 2013! Together, we

will run or walk to raise funds for ground breaking

research, provide diagnostic services and support women

facing cancer.

If you can't join us in the walk, you can join us by

making a pledge or donation on behalf of our team. Your

pledge will help fund important research into the cause

and cure of women's cancers, prevention, education and

support service programs for those women battling

cancer and their families. Our funds will go to support

programs in Southern California, all of which are very

near us geographically.

To sign up for the walk or to make a donation on behalf

of our team, go to: http://do.eifoundation.org/goto/

SBLBSHP. If you’ve already signed up for the run/walk

but still want to join our team, just email

[email protected] with your name and let them

know that you want to join team SB/LB Society of

Health-System Pharmacists. There are many FAQs

posted on the website, but if you have any questions,

please don't hesitate to contact Jenny Hu at

[email protected]

Our team goal is to raise $1000.00 before the run/walk,

but if we have 25 registered team members and raise at

least $250 by April 19, we will qualify for a reserved

team meeting area at the Coliseum and a team sign as

well. Join our team today!

We are also planning a social event immediately after the

run/walk on May 11, so please save the date and stay

tuned!

Hope to see you all there!

Report on Leadership Breakfast #1 in March By Judith Nakao, CSHP Delegate

South Bay/Long Beach Society of Health-System Pharmacists

presented their first of three Leadership Breakfast Education and

Networking Programs for the year, on Friday, March 1, 2103 at

Torrance Cultural Center. Our speaker, Darryl Rich, Pharm.D., MBA,

FASHP, Medication Safety Specialist for the Institute for Safe

Medication Practices (ISMP) provided a well-received presentation and

updates on “The Top 10 ISMP Medication Safety Alert Issues.”

We had about 61 participants in attendance composed of Pharmacy

Directors/Managers/Supervisors, Medication Safety officers,

Pharmacists, and Intern Pharmacists who found the program

informative. Attendees of this program earned one hour of continuing

education credit (0.1 CEU) and enjoyed a delicious hot breakfast while

networking and meeting with representatives from nine of our industry sponsors: Astellas Pharma, Boehringer Ingelheim,

Celgene, Forrest, Glaxo-SmithKline, Millenium, Nephron, Novartis Oncology, and Sanofi Pharmaceuticals.

This program would not have been possible if not for the continuous dedication and hard work of SBLB’s Clinical Affairs Co-

Chairs: Lisa Lum, Judith Nakao, Rosalin Preechakul, and Bill Reeve who continue to provide excellent programming

events for CSHP and our chapter. Thank you!!!

We cannot forget to thank our student volunteers from USC: Peter Dinh, Daniel Kudryashov, Maria

CSHP Liaison Report By Steve Thompson, CSHP Liaison

Congratulations again on receiving the Chapter of Distinction Award for 2012. Another

job well done and keep up the good work.

PPC-PAC

The Pharmacy Professionals of California Political Action Committee (PPC-PAC) was

formed to represent your interests in Sacramento and help to establish vital

relationships with California elected officials. A donation can ensure that public

officials are educated about the vital role pharmacists play in healthcare. A donation

form can be found on the CSHP website using the Political Action Committee link, if

you choose to make a PAC contribution.

This year is very important for the profession of pharmacy. Senator Hernandez has

introduced a bill, SB 493, recognizing California pharmacists as healthcare providers.

It would be great to have a large showing in Sacramento for Legislative Day on April

16th to help support this effort.

I want to encourage everyone to visit the CSHP website to see all that is going on in

Pharmacy. The site is www.cshp.org and it contains a wealth of information with

events, announcements, and news, just to name a few. Make it a regular practice to log

-on.

Our chapter is doing great with some remarkable leaders and has had several great

programs. Please keep your membership up-to-date, and come out and join in the

chapter events. I hope to see you there.
