www.newsday.com NEWSDAY, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2010 CLASS C CLASS A BY ADAM RONIS [email protected] MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. — The clock froze with 21:23 left in the first half between Friends Acade- my and Madrid-Waddington yes- terday. Even if the official time wasn’t kept on the field, the extra free minutes wouldn’t have helped Madrid-Wadding- ton against the Friends Acade- my starters. Friends Academy was domi- nant, using five first-half goals to handle Madrid-Waddington with ease, 5-2, in a state Class C boys soccer semifinal at Middle- town High School. Friends Acad- emy (14-1-2) will attempt to win its second consecutive state championship against Marathon at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow. Mike Isernio scored two goals, Matt Slotnick and Colin Heffron each had one goal and one assist, and David Sher scored for the Quakers, who scored five goals for the second straight game. It didn’t take long for the Quak- ers to strike. Slotnick took a blast that went off Madrid-Wadding- ton goalkeeper Alex Brock and the ball went right to Isernio, who scored less than two min- utes into the game. Slotnick, Hef- fron, and Chris Campbell are the foundation of the team and Slot- nick has scored 28 goals, but it’s been different Quakers who have complemented that trio in the past few games. Isernio was the one yesterday. “We’re all really good soccer players,” he said. “Those three are the core of the group and it’s great when someone else can pitch in. We’re just playing some great soccer. We’re possessing the ball and getting a lot of chanc- es and we’re finishing.” Said Friends Academy coach Marshall Lindner: “Isernio is one of those grinding type of players. He constantly plays in the defen- sive end well and lately he’s had success moving forward. He’s be- coming more confident with the ball and being more creative. More guys are getting involved in the offense besides just Matt. If they’re going to key on him, we have a lot of guys who can score.” Heffron scored in the 13th minute, Slotnick scored 12 min- utes later, Sher scored with 7:53 left in the first half, and Isernio scored with two seconds left in the first half. Eli Rousso made seven saves in the win. Friends Academy had just three starters on the field to begin the second half. But Matt Kendall scored with 25:52 left in the game and four minutes later, Brom Steinberg pulled Madrid- Waddington (14-2-3) within 5-2. Then the Quakers sent their starters back into the game. BY JAMES CREPEA [email protected] MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. — Say- ville’s Sean Fullam joked about the developing off-the-field chemistry he has with team- mate Vincent Sakk. Fullam and Sakk have been sharing a hotel room as the Golden Flashes compete in the boys soccer state tournament. “We have a connection going on,” Fullam said, laugh- ing. “It carried onto the field.” The connection worked when Fullam sent a cross in- side the six-yard box to an un- defended Sakk who easily tapped the ball past Goshen goalkeeper Doug Finkelstein with 9:22 left in the second half to give the Golden Flashes a 1-0 victory over Goshen in the Class A state semifinals yester- day at Middletown High School’s Faller Turf Field. Sayville (19-1-1) will face Pittsford Mendon (17-2-2) in the state championship today at 10:30 a.m. Sakk said it was one of the easiest goals he’s ever scored. “I better not have missed it,” Sakk said. “It was handed to me; doesn’t matter how we did it, just put it in the back of the net.” Fullam, who scored two goals in the Long Island final/Southeast Regional final against South Side last Sunday, beat a Goshen defender to the ball after it deflected off of a second Goshen player before passing it across to Sakk. “We were up there with the defenders all game, just wait- ing for one break,” Fullam said. “I knew if I just laid it across the six someone would be there.” Goshen nearly tied the score in the final minute on a header by Dylan Begany but Sayville goalkeeper Dan Scheck was there to make the save. The Temple-bound Scheck made five saves in his fourth consecu- tive shutout. “I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times the kid’s a solid rock back there,” Fullam said of Scheck. “The crowd was cheer- ing ‘brick wall,’ it’s not a joke.” The Golden Flashes have al- lowed just three goals all sea- son and posted shutouts in 19 of 21 games. Sayville avoided disaster when Goshen’s Kenny Ander- son shot the ball over the cross- bar from less than 15 yards out with 16:20 left in the second half. It was déjà vu for Ander- son, who had a similar opportu- nity in the 33rd minute of play but shot over the crossbar then as well. Finkelstein made four saves for Goshen (13-4-3). It is Sayville’s first appear- ance in the state finals. “We’ve made the playoffs 16 straight years but this is the fur- thest we’ve ever gotten and it feels good,” Sayville coach Val Winter said. “My goal initially was to get them this far be- cause it’s an experience just being here but now that we’re here just getting here is not good enough anymore.” Isernio kicks two, Friends dominate Friends Academy’s Matt Slotnick, right, battles Justin Pierce. Sakk’s goal leads to the title game Sayville senior Vincent Sakk after scoring the game-winning goal. B13
