Savage Inequalities

1. Irl Solomon's history class.

The classroom has about 4 girls who are either pregnant or have had a baby already. The history teacher was in law at first but then went to find the toughest job and 30 years later he still there. He stated that when he asked the pregnant teenage girls why they got pregnant, their honest answer was ‘why not’ the education they have here has no meaning when they would apply to a university. They believed that if they graduated which was a slim chance they would not further their education any more than reading Martin Luther King’s speech every year. Many other students also say that they don’t show up to class because they longer have equipment or supplies to proceed in class. The school overall has a lot of damage, laid off many teachers making classes grow bigger, and using substitute teachers to cut back in school costs.

2. Jennifer's views on schools in poor area (Bronx & East St. Louis).

Jennifer’s views on schools in poor low income areas is its hell. The reason that her and her family moved away and looked for something that is better especially in education. She overall thinks if you want to get better education than what your damaged school has than make the move and move somewhere else. And you also need to have parent that care enough and find ways to leave instead of staying there complaining and putting your education in danger.

3. Contrast East St Louis with the school in Rye, New York.

Both schools are building that have a students who go to classrooms. Except the difference is that one actually function one than the other one. East St Louis is a low income school that has no real education and in no way helping the students. Its building has a lot of damaged that some parts are flooded and or locked. Most classrooms have too many students, very little to none supplies, and sometimes the teacher doesn’t show so the classroom is really more of room full of teenagers doing nothing. The other school is well polished buildings are well maintain. Classrooms have less students and well paid teachers. And students are actually learning with the supplies they have to use.

After your summary, include your own perspective/opinion about this article. For example, given your experience do you think in the past 20 years anything has changed in our system? If so, what? If not, why have things remained the same?

In my opinion this article shines the truth that not all schools have what the need to excel their student’s educations even today. Some things have changed of having education being the most important thing for a child but even with the government stating this there still is damaged schools. The problem now is more on the students coming from low income families. I believed in a way it has stayed the same because money is being put to armies than our school systems.
