COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course enables you to become familiar with various genres ofliterature. A variety of poetry, drama and fiction is exploredextensively in terms of historical literary tradition. Intensivestudy involves identification of literary terminology and deviceswithin specific works so as to enhance your appreciation ofliterature.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By completion of the course, students will be able to do thefollowing:

1. Display a knowledge of the historical development of poetry, dramaand prose fiction from their roots.

2. Identify the characteristicsof ballads, sonnets and other formsof poetry.

3. Identify metrical and rhyming patterns in poetry.

4. Recognize the characteristics of the short story and be able tocompare descriptive and narrative techniques as well as characterdevelopment among different stories.

5. Demonstrate a knowledge of the different types of drama andconcepts such as tragedy, tragic hero, comedy, farce, etc.

6. Produce well-organzied written or oral critical appreciations ofthe works studied, using correct literary terminology.

7. Demonstrate a knowledge of thematic and artistic similaritieswhich link all writers of great literature,while recognizing thedifferencesthat historicalperspective,literary form and culturegenerate.

METHODOLOGY

Lectures will provide historical perspective and explanation ofliterary terminology. Class readings, group discussions andpresentationswill give a seminar format for learning. Video-tape,audio-tape and film presentation will serve as background support orillustrationfor certain works.
