Welcome. . .About the SH Botanic GardensSHBG is a non-profit organisation and a registered charity. It is funded by the community and run by the community for the enjoyment of the community.

The theme underpinning the design and plantings of this 15-hectare garden is that for all seasons in a cool climate where water is becoming a scarce commodity. A mix of exotic, native and endemic species will be displayed through a series of ‘journeys’ representing town, country and region of the Southern Highlands.

This botanic garden will make a vital contribution to the parks in the region and will complement, in a significant way, the private gardens in the district that are open to the public from time to time.

Our two registered collections of 21 species of box (Buxus) and 23 species of birch (Betula) are all growing in the garden. We registered these two collections to help ensure the conservation of significant plants. All these plants are suitable for the cool climate of the Southern Highlands and can be grown in the home garden.

The garden is open three days each week. Everyone is welcome, just come in and have a look around. We have come a long way, but there is a very long way to go.

SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS AUTUMN GARDENS WEEKEND + PLANT FAIR 2019

Community GardenThe garden is a community garden and has, so far, been created through small grants, the generosity of the people and businesses in the community, the valuable support of Friends of the Garden and the tireless efforts of our volunteers who work in the garden.

Our monthly working bees are changing to weekly working bees. Our retail nursery will soon be open to the public, providing an opportunity for locals and visitors to get unique and highly sought-after plants. Most plants have been propagated from seed and cuttings by volunteers. A diversity of unusual plants will be available to suit the home garden during all the Southern Highlands seasons and will be the envy of all your friends.

Our Community ReachWe love having visitors to our Garden. As the garden, itself, is not yet very developed, we have lots of events so people have a really good excuse to come and visit us. It’s like having a party for the sake of having a party.

We celebrate Earth Hour with the support of the Wingecarribee Shire Council. This annual event has something for all the family, including solar lantern making workshop for kids and sustainable living ideas for adults.

Our ninth year of the Autumn Garden and Plant Fair weekend provides rare and unusual plants to purchase and a visit to beautiful private local gardens, attracting garden enthusiasts from far and wide.

Our annual botanic garden open day in May is for all the family with a focus on music and a day out in the lovely garden space.

Christmas in the garden is becoming as traditional as Christmas itself, with another opportunity for the whole family to enjoy an outdoor picnic with BBQ, bar and live music.

Kite flying in August is a must for the kids to come and make their own kite before flying it, while Mum and Dad enjoy food and drink and a look around.

As we develop further, more events to attract all elements of the community will be held. We are keen for everyone to visit us.

An outstanding 20 acre rural garden surrounding an 1880s homestead renovated 12 years ago.

This grand country house (circa 1890) was built by Christopher Bennett (1857–1917), Sydney newspaper proprietor. When the current owner and his late wife bought the property in 2004, they commissioned Howard Tanner to bring his expertise into the redesign. The house is set on 100-acres of prime grazing land at Sutton Forest and has five acres of gardens and lawns with magnificent old specimen trees. There are a further 15 acres of parklands featuring many original oaks and more plantings of deciduous trees. The adjoining vineyard was planted in 2007 with six hectares under vine.

The brick gate lodge is the only building visible from the road—a striking building with its slate roof and Tudor-style battens. After making your way to the Lodge, take the opportunity to walk down the gravel driveway through an avenue of tall pines to reach the house and gardens.

One of the new additions to the garden is the walled vegetable garden with a central fountain and twelve garden beds. At the corner of this walled area is a completely restored glasshouse with the original metal parts but 21st century glass technology on the roof.

A large town garden famous for its roses and perennials.

The Cants have created a classic English-style plant lovers’ garden. Skilful plantings of harmonious colours and rich textures have created mixed borders that surround a croquet lawn, drifting apparently effortlessly from one colour theme.

Towards the back of the property is the woodland garden, which features mature eucalyptus trees underplanted with European woodland species, ferns and Australian natives. The shade of

the woodland garden provides a contrast to the light-filled borders and lawns.

The removal of a large row of pines several years ago created new opportunities along the eastern boundary which blend effortlessly into the overall garden scheme

The garden has been masterfully planted so that even the most tricky cold and moisture-loving species flourish in the harsh Australian conditions.

A plant collectors garden surrounding a restored 1920s residence abounds with many treasures.

The current owners bought the house in its one acre setting in 2007 and undertook extensive renovations and restoration. The work was recognized with a heritage award from Wingecarribee Shire Council in 2011. Having completed the work on the house, work was then started on the garden.

Apart from a few established trees, such as the maples in the rear, and the Pin Oak and the Macrocarpa in the front, the garden is relatively young but now looks surprisingly established. The owners aim was always to develop a garden that suited the Arts and Crafts character of the house.

The garden now abounds with many rare and unusual perennials and an extensive collection of Hydrangeas.

This town garden is the culmination of 40 years of earnest gardening dedication and plant collecting.

The house, driveway and early garden beds were planned around the existing large Eucalyptus radiata trees. Deciduous trees for autumn and spring colour were added, as were evergreen shrubs such as rhododendrons, pieris and camellias. The design was informal with specimen trees planted around the circular driveway and around a courtyard behind the house. The house and garden have been substantially renovated over the last 10 years, with the removal of several large eucalypts creating the opportunity for a redesign of the space at the rear of the house. There are now formal and informal areas. The land has been terraced with hedges visually separating the various garden rooms. A number of

maples and a large crabapple (Malus floribunda) shade the house

on the top level and provide a sheltered environment for hostas,

hydrangeas smaller maples and ferns. Roses and sun loving plants

are happy on the northern side of this terrace, while off to the side, a

series of small ponds, and a gravel garden have replaced the family

swimming pool. The “play lawn” is separated from the top level by

a path and a row of pleached Malus ioensis ‘Plena’. A pavilion and

rectangular pool on the next level are separated from the woodland

garden below by a Prunus lusitanica hedge. Here magnolias, lilacs

and crab apples provide dappled shade allowing roses, dahlias,

peonies, iris, alstroemeria, grasses, sedum, belladonna and day lilies

provide seasonal colour and texture.

An extensive and detailed large two acre town garden set around a 1960s house with rural views.

The front garden comprises a number of mature exotic trees from the original ‘68 plantings along with a range of eucalypts. The current owners have used these “bones” to flesh out the garden with an extensive planting of shrubs, new trees and perennials, adding dry stone walls and stone edges. The soft gentle curves of the garden are juxtaposed against the very rectangular lines of the house.

The rear garden is also a mix of exotics planted within and around many of the original eucalypts and other indigenous trees. Highlights include the fern garden, best viewed from the garden deck, the ‘pad’ dominated by a large red maple that provides welcome shade throughout summer, and views through to the ‘snow pear’ forest and dry creek bed.

SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS AUTUMN GARDENS WEEKEND + PLANT FAIR 2019

The Building FundOur Building Fund has recently been launched to support the construction of some major projects in the garden.

The Education Centre is our immediate focus and will give the garden the opportunity to roll out its education program. The education program has been designed to appeal to the interests of all sectors of the community, including garden enthusiasts, home gardeners, school children and groups such as retirement village residents who may want a fun and educational outing. The building will be fitted with modern audio and visual technology and allow these activities to be held out of the weather.

The Visitor Centre is a much more ambitious project which has been designed by an award-winning architect to be the centre piece of the garden and a major tourist attraction in the region. This major building will be a ‘must see’ destination with something for everyone. When you are done with admiring the amazing building, have a coffee or light lunch with friends in our cafe, hold a birthday or anniversary celebration in the restaurant, enjoy a wedding in the garden with special catering from the kitchen, hold your conference in our Hall, meet with your garden club in our flexible and state of the art meeting rooms, enjoy the view of the garden from the Gallery or Viewing Platform or just grab your morning coffee from our ‘hole in the wall’ on your morning walk.

The garden design focuses on plant species that thrive in the climatic conditions of the Southern Highlands. Our award-winning landscape architect has cleverly integrated many features that display Southern Highlands flora into the ingenious design.

Many features of the garden, such as the children’s garden, can also be funded through the Building Fund. The Louisa Atkinson Fern Garden is another stand-alone special feature of the garden design. Our very exciting board walk in the native garden is something that deserves special attention. And, of course, the parterre garden the design of which was inspired by John Olsen sketches, is a special feature that will be a major attraction for visitors to view from the Visitor Centre.

Our Building Fund is an important step to boost the income necessary for the development of the garden. It will also assist us make grant applications so that this garden can be built more quickly for the enjoyment of the whole community. Contributing to the Building Fund will help make this garden move from a dream to a reality.
