Chronology June 28, 1742 General James Robertson, the eldest son of John and Mary

(Gower) Robertson was born in Brunswick County, Virginia. Robertson. A Revolutionary War Soldier, Robertson would become famous as the founder of Nashville and “Father of Tennessee.”

Jan. 2, 1751 Charlotte Reeves, the future wife of Gen. James Robertson was

born in Northampton County, North Carolina to parents George Reeves and Mary Jordan. The city of Charlotte, Tennessee, and Charlotte Pike in Nashville were named in her honor.

Jan. 21, 1768 James Robertson married Charlotte Reeves at Wake County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of a Presbyterian minister and a Sweetheart of his youth. Oct. 1770 The twenty-eight year old James Robertson led several families to the Upper Holston and Watauga Rivers, west of the Alleghany Mountains in what is now East Tennessee. May 1772 The Watauga settlement established the Watauga Association and a “constitution” which some consider to be the first Declaration of Independence, based on a majority-rule system of democracy. July 4, 1776 The United States of America declared independence from the

British Empire. 1776 During the year, James Robertson negotiated with the Indians for Henderson’s Purchase including lands on the Cumberland, although it was not finalized for several years.

1779-80 The Cumberland Settlers arrived at French Lick, headed by James Robertson. The pioneers, starting from Watauga settlement, trekked hundreds of miles across the Cumberland Plateau to make a permanent home in the Cumberland Settlement. Several forts were established, the largest was popularly known as the French Lick Fort, also called Fort Nashborough. Other stations established were Mansker’s, Asher’s, Bledsoe’s, Stone’s River, Freeland’s, Eaton’s and Fort Union. Apr. 24, 1780 Colonel John Donelson, with the help of John Cockrill, Charles

Robertson, William Reeves and others, arrived in the French Lick settlement with the women and children via a flotilla of boats. The 1000-mile voyage would include Rachel Donelson, the future wife of Andrew Jackson.

Spring 1780 The Cumberland Compact document was signed by more than 200 frontier settlers to create a local government in the Cumberland Valley of Middle Tennessee. The signers included inhabitants of Fort Nashborough, Fort Union, Mansker’s, Bledsoe’s, Asher’s, Stones River, Freeland’s, and Eaton’s stations. Summer 1780 The first wedding in the colony took place at Fort Nashborough,

the marriage of Capt. James Leiper and Miss Susan Drake. Jan. 11, 1781 Felix Robertson was born at Freeland’s Station. He was the sixth child of James and Charlotte (Reeves) Robertson, acknowledged as the first white child born in the Nashville settlement. April 2, 1781 Fort Nashborough was attacked by a force of Chickamauga Cherokees led by Dragging Canoe in the “Battle of the Bluffs,”

wherein the settlers managed to fend off the attack with the help of the fort’s hound dogs, unleashed by Charlotte Reeves Robertson. In defense of the fort, Capt. James Leiper was mortally wounded during the assault.

April 1783 James Robertson was elected representative to the North Carolina legislature. May 17, 1783 Davidson County was created from Washington County, North Carolina; named in honor of the Revolutionary War officer William Lee Davidson. Oct. 1784 James Robertson’s family moved to West Nashville to make their

home on land situated at Richland Creek. ca. 1786-87 The Robertson family moved from their humble log cabin that

Indian Agent to The Chickasaw and Choctaw Indians in the present-day state of Mississippi. 1825 Gen. James Robertson’s bones were removed to Nashville and interred in the public burying ground at City Cemetery. The ceremonials of homage from the state were delivered by Judge John Haywood, an old friend of Gen. Robertson. 1843 Charlotte Robertson, the wife of Gen. James Robertson passed away at the age of ninety-two. She is buried in Nashville’s City

Cemetery beside her husband. 1859 The Tennessee State Capitol is completed. 1880 Nashville celebrates the centennial year of its founding. 1796 Tennessee became the sixteenth state. Mar. 30, 1796 John Sevier became governor of Tennessee in which post he served until September 23, 1801. He was succeeded by Archibald Roane. Sevier would serve another term as governor from 1803-1809. 1815 Andrew Jackson defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans. Oct. 11, 1903 A monument in Centennial Park was dedicated to James Robertson

and presented to the city of Nashville by Major E. C. Lewis. Robertson’s descendants from twenty states and one foreign country gathered with the citizens of Nashville for the unveiling of the monument located on the edge of Lake Watauga in Centennial Park.
