February 20, 2016 Membership Meeting of the San Diego Chapter of the SAR

The San Diego Chapter of the SAR and the Mayflower Society held a joint meeting and luncheon at the Green Dragon Tavern in Carlsbad, CA., to celebrate the 284th Birthday of President George Washington. The meeting was led by newly installed President Dennis Cushman for the SAR and Colony Governor Gail Raser of the Mayflower Society.

Guest and members arrived at 11:00am for a half hour of socializing after which President Cushman called the meeting to order at 11:30 and the Rev Dr. Stan De Long gave the invocation. The Colors were advanced by the Color Guard and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ernest Mortensen. Anita Guenin of the Mayflower Society led the Pilgrim Pledge and Carroll Moore led the Pledge to the SAR.

President Cushman then introduced the Head Table; CASSAR President Kent Gregory and his wife Lisa. Gail Raser Governor of the San Diego Colony Mayflower Society. Ray Raser, Past President of the San Diego Chapter of the SAR, and 1st VP Bill Ketchum of the San Diego Chapter of the SAR. Bob Hayden Secretary of the San Diego Chapter of the SAR. The Governor of the San Diego Mayflower Colony Gail Raser then welcomed members and introduced State members of the Mayflower Society by calling their names and asking them to stand for recognition, among them her husband Ray Raser, the co-editor of the State Magazine, Rick Bailey Captain of the CA Society of Mayflower Descendants and Past San Diego Colony Governors and present San Diego Colony Board members. Karon Jarrod, the DAR National Corresponding Secretary was introduced and received a hearty applause.

President Dennis Cushman then presented SAR member Joseph Miller with the War Service Medal and a bar for his time in Vietnam. President Cushman thanked Joseph for his service and devotion to his country.

President Cushman also presented Past President Ray Raser with a gavel and plaque for his service to the Chapter. Ray thanked President Cushman for the recognition. Ray also thanked his wife Gail Raser for all the help she had given him during his duties as President.

San Diego Colony Governor Gail Raser of the Mayflower Society then asked Joyce Shiloff to do the Roll Call of the Pilgrim Ancestors. As each name of the Mayflower crew and passengers were called, those members in the audience descended from them stood up to be recognized and counted. This continued until the entire passenger manifest of the Mayflower was completely gone through. President Dennis Cushman then asked members present who were descended from Revolutionary War Veterans to stand and be recognized.

Joyce Shiloff of the Mayflower Society asked Bob Holcomb, Nelia Johnson and Bill Smith to come forward and be recognized as new member of the Mayflower Society. She presented them with a pin and pictures were taken.

Mayflower Elder Kathleen Norris then offered Table Grace and the meeting recessed for lunch at 12:00.

During the dinner recess Happy Birthday was sung to Austin Wallace of the SAR who was 84 years old on the 20th of February.

5

Also, following the main meal President Cushman asked that the two ceremonial cakes celebrating George Washington’s Birthday be cut and served to members and guest by the SAR Ladies Auxiliary. One was a white cake and the other a chocolate cake.

The meeting was recalled to order at 1:00 and SDSAR President Dennis Cushman, introduced the speaker for the event, Roger Cooper who is a professional impersonator of General George Washington. General George Washington held forth on the subject of personal, state and national sovereignty as opposed to subjugation of those three states. After his presentation he took a few questions from the Revolutionary War Era audience.

After George Washington’s talk President Dennis Cushman presented Roger Cooper with a Gadsden Coin and Colony Governor Gail Raser of the Mayflower Society presented Mr. Cooper with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Colony Governor Gail Raser then made a few remarks asking Mayflower members to sign up for the Mayflower Family History Day booth on March 5th at the LDS Church on 2255 Felicita Rd in Escondido. Governor Raser also announced that a Ladies Tea for the Ladies Auxiliary of the SAR would be held at the home of Susan Mattern and asked interested ladies to sign up on a signup sheet at one of the event tables. Mayflower member Jennifer Anklesaria also asked all members and guest to try and attend the San Diego County History Day competition taking place on the 27th of February at the San Diego County Office of Education from 9:00am to 3:00. She promised you won’t be disappointed by the young talented presenters.

Governor Raser announced the next meeting of the San Diego Mayflower Society would be May 21 at MCAS Miramar, Officer’s Club.

President Cushman announced that the Carlsbad Library would be re–opening on the 27 of February with an open house from 10:00am to 2:00. This will be of interest to people doing genealogical research amongst others. He also asked SAR members to sign up to participate in the Family History Day SAR booth at 2255 Felicita Rd in Escondido on March 5th. President Cushman announced the next membership meeting of the San Diego Chapter of the SAR would be March 19th at MCAS Miramar Officer’s Club.

The Rev. Dr. Stan De Long offered the Benediction and SAR member and Past President Al Ludwig led the members and guest in the SAR Recessional.

The Color Guard retired the Colors and President Cushman closed the meeting.

Bob Hayden Secretary San Diego Chapter SAR

Welcome New 2016 SAR SD Chapter President Dennis A. Cushman

Dennis Cushman joined the SAR in 2005. His revolutionary ancestor is James McCann, a surgeon who served with Colonel Stevens (later Gen. Stevens) in the Revolutionary War campaign in the

Southern Colonies. In 2006, Dennis served as 1st Vice President of the San Diego Chapter. In 2007, he was elected and served as President of the Chapter. In January 2016, Dennis was again elected President of the San Diego Chapter. Dennis is assistant general manager of the San Diego County Water Authority, a wholesale public agency that provides water to 3.2 million residents and supports a $218 billion regional economy. He leads the Water Authority’s externally focused water policy initiatives and programs designed to diversify and improve the reliability of the region’s water supply. He oversees the Water Authority’s imported supplies from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, including supplies imported from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Bay-Delta and Colorado River. He directs the agency’s legislative advocacy programs in Sacramento, California, and Washington, D.C., and oversees

the agency’s Public Outreach and Conservation Department. Dennis was born in Rochester, NY, and spent the first half of his childhood in Rochester and later, Huntington, Long Island. His family moved to San Diego in 1973. Dennis is a graduate of San Diego State University, with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. He and his wife, Deborah, live in Fletcher Hills, El Cajon, with their two children, Natalie and Brian.

**************** Welcome New 2016 SAR SD Chapter 1st VP William John Ketchum

I joined the SAR in 2004. My ancestor, Amos Sweet, fought for our freedom in the revolutionary war as a private in companies made up of militia belonging to Attleborough, Massachusetts, from 1776 to 1780. I was able to join the SAR by virtue of my ancestor Amos Sweet, and because my grandmother, Marian Sweet, had joined the DAR in 1908, making my job easier in proving my ancestry. My family background has seen every generation serve in the military ever since my ancestor Amos Sweet did.

My great grandfather, Oney Sweet, fought in the civil war, keeping the union intact. His diaries and letters have recently been published, "What the Private Saw", available on Amazon. I served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War era. I graduated from USC. I worked for General Dynamics Convair as an engineer on the Atlas and Centaur rockets. I have a son, Brian, who is a

pilot for Frontier Airlines. In 2006, I was 2nd Vice President in the San Diego SAR, when I was diagnosed with bladder cancer, requiring me to undergo surgery and chemotherapy. For the next several years I was inactive in the SAR, but recently I have been attending SAR meetings. At the January meeting I was asked by Dennis Cushman and Jim Mattern if I would agree to be nominated to serve as 1st Vice President. I agreed to serve if nominated and elected. I was nominated and elected, for which I am honored, and I look forward to serving.

Thank you. Bill Ketchum.

**************** Welcome New Member Erich Benjamin Riedel

Erich Benjamin Riedel was born in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1959 to Alfred and Ellen Riedel. With his three siblings, he was homeschooled (before it was fashionable) by his father and his step-mother, Mary-Ellen Riedel. After attending public high school, he moved on to college where he eventually earned a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of San Diego in 1980. From the time of his family’s conversion to the Roman Catholic Church in 1977, he had considered becoming a

priest. To that end, he spent two years in a seminary in Rome studying theology, but eventually decided that was not his vocation. While working for the San Diego Municipal Court, he earned a M.A. in Philosophy and then a law degree. He passed the Bar exam in 1992 and has been working as a research attorney for the San Diego Superior Court ever since. He finally found his soul mate and, in 1999, he

and Cherrilee were married in the beautiful Immaculata Church six years to the day after they had first met. On January 23, 2016, he was inducted into the SAR, San Diego Chapter, and was finally able to join his two brothers (Neil and Larry, who had gotten in through Mary-Ellen’s DAR ancestor) as SARs. His induction followed over three years of grueling genealogical investigation pursued by the indefatigable Mary-Ellen, which eventually hinged on finding an elusive link between ancestors 5 and 6. Thanks to Mary-Ellen, then-President/Registrar Ray Raser, and CASSAR VP Jim Fosdyck, the link was made. Now, through his paternal grandmother, he is a proud son of Patriot Lt. Jeremiah Willison, defender of the Declaration of Independence.

Erich & Cherrilee Riedel, Past Pres. Ray Raser, Neil & Larry Riedel Family and

CASSAR 1st VP Jim Fosdyck.

(The Eric Riedel application was a 3 year journey for Ray Raser as Registrar and

was finally approved based on a “prepondrence of evidence” presentation as

suggested by CASSAR 1st VP Fosdyck.)
