December 2016 Sapphire Scene RESIDENT OF THE MONTH
FRANCES CURDY
Frances was born January 14, 1922 in Park Rapids, Minnesota. She is the “middle” child of five siblings, having three sisters and two brothers. Of her siblings, she is the only one born in a house that was
nicknamed the “Rat House” because it was vacant for a very long time before her parents, Dierk (Dick) and Estie Ackerman moved the family in. As a young child in the summer Frances, or “Fritzie” as her father
called her, would help assemble farm machinery with her dad, work in her mother’s garden, swim across a river to help Grandma Larson do chores and laundry with an old-fashioned washing machine, and still
found the time to help Grandpa Larson build stone buildings at Itaska State Park. Frances always did well academically in school and her favorite subject was chemistry.
It was after World War II broke out that her parents, grandparents and younger brother moved to Everett, Washington to work in the defense plants. Frances later moved, along with her sister, to Washington,
where she was hired as a ship fitter’s helper building dry docks during the war. One of Frances’ favorite memories is the one of her ride on the train from Park Rapids, Minnesota to Everett, Washington to visit
family, and then actually staying because she had gotten the job. Her first job was baking bread for a family back in Minnesota, and she also worked at Concordia College in St. Paul, Minnesota. Aside from
working as a “ship fitter’s helper,” she also enjoyed being a “shift chemist” for Weyerhaeuser Paper.
It was while attending a swing-shift dance with friends that she met the love of her life, Everett Curdy, U.S. Navy. He had been assigned to Whidbey Naval Port and helped build the USS Sage. Everett and Frances were married on December 7, 1945 in Park Rapids, Minnesota. When Everett was discharged from the
Navy, they returned to Montana and bought a farm in Belgrade. Everett was originally from Bozeman. In April of 1946, they sold the farm and moved to the Bitterroot Valley, buying a dairy farm northeast of
Corvallis in 1948. In the early days of farming Frances could often be seen on the tractor cutting and baling hay. She milked cows and sold chicken eggs to various individuals and restaurants in Missoula, helping pay for farm equipment, working right along with Everett. She did pay for that 1970 Dodge Dart station wagon with a great deal of hard work and many cases of eggs. In 1975, they moved into Corvallis where
they retired and tended a large garden. As a retired couple, they developed a love for motorcycles. Frances and Everett could often be seen riding their Honda 90 bikes around.
Everett and Frances were married for 59 ½ years and have three children: Mary, Willis and Philip. Frances has six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, and she is very proud of her
family.
Frances has traveled to Saudi Arabia, England and Scotland. Needless to say, Frances Curdy is quite the accomplished lady and is most proud of the fact that she restored her 1950 Ferguson tractor, and then drove it in both the Corvallis
Memorial Day and Ravalli County Fair parades. She was even the Grand Marshall for the Memorial Day parade! Frances has been a volunteer at the
Daly Mansion, active in gardening, quilting, Golden Age, LWML, Grace Lutheran Church, Tired Iron Club, Corvallis Civic Club, Bitterroot Good Sams, Sapphire
Lutheran Homes and the American Legion Auxiliary, which is very special to her because she joined when she was a junior at 12 years of age.
Frances enjoys music, her favorite holiday is Christmas and she always has a warm smile for everyone. Be sure to stop and say “hello” if you see her at the
Remington!
