February 2014 Sapphire Scene Resident of the month June Holt: June was born June 1, 1934 and will be 80 this year. June jokes saying that as the 6th of 9 children, her parents ran out of ideas to name their children so they named her June because of her birth month. She was born in the family home on Water Street in Darby, MT. June went to school in Darby and grew up playing with her little sisters. At the age of ten, June started baby sitting. Her most famous child she cared for was Sapphire’s own Judy Lu Mason! When she turned fourteen, June started working on nearby farms. She picked potatoes, strawberries and raspberries. On August 1, 1953, at the age of nineteen, June married Richard Holt. He was her cousin’s friend and their first date was to the Ravalli County Fair. Richard dared her to go on a carnival ride and she surprised him, her friends and herself by doing it! They went together for about one year before they were married. Together they had four children: Tom, of California, Cindy, of Hamilton, Tim, of Nevada and Allen who’s considering moving to Washington state. In 1963 the Holt family (Richard, June and all four kids) crammed into the cab of a pickup truck and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. They had all of their possessions in the back of the truck. Richard was a plumber and he went to work in Las Vegas with June’s brother. They lived in Las Vegas for seventeen years. They moved back to Montana and Richard bought land in Conner, MT and built a big house on the land. He bought trailer houses for the kids and all moved home except Tom. Richard liked to invest in property and rental apartments. June enjoyed being near her children especially when they made her a grandma. Richard continued to invest in property but passed away in 1985. June moved back to Las Vegas but underwent back surgery and moved back “home”. She met a man named Lloyd Hunter and they became great friends. They talked on the phone a lot as he lived in Deer Lodge. They would get together by visiting back and forth. They went out to eat, fished, hunted, and camped together. Lloyd had a boat and camp trailer that they would take to Flathead Lake. They enjoyed each other’s company and they loved to go dancing together. June lost Lloyd to a heart attack and she is now committed to the “single” life as she is tired of the heart aches associated with loss. She enjoys her life in Canyon View Apartments. She still cooks her meals, goes grocery shopping, visits with her friends, reads her books and bible and watches television. June likes living here and she loves her apartment. Stop and say “Hello” to June the next time you see her and have her tell you about babysitting Judy Lu! That story is a doozie! February 2014 Sapphire Scene Resident of the month June Holt: June was born June 1, 1934 and will be 80 this year. June jokes

saying that as the 6th of 9 children, her parents ran out of ideas to name their children so they named

her June because of her birth month. She was born in the family home on Water Street in Darby, MT.

June went to school in Darby and grew up playing with her little sisters. At the age of ten, June

started baby sitting. Her most famous child she cared for was Sapphire’s own Judy Lu Mason! When

she turned fourteen, June started working on nearby farms. She picked potatoes, strawberries and

raspberries. On August 1, 1953, at the age of nineteen, June married Richard Holt. He was her

cousin’s friend and their first date was to the Ravalli County Fair. Richard dared her to go on a

carnival ride and she surprised him, her friends and herself by doing it! They went together for about

one year before they were married. Together they had four children: Tom, of California, Cindy, of

Hamilton, Tim, of Nevada and Allen who’s considering moving to Washington state. In 1963 the Holt

family (Richard, June and all four kids) crammed into the cab of a pickup truck and moved to Las

Vegas, Nevada. They had all of their possessions in the back of the truck. Richard was a plumber and

he went to work in Las Vegas with June’s brother. They lived in Las Vegas for seventeen years.

They moved back to Montana and Richard bought land in Conner, MT and built a big house on the

land. He bought trailer houses for the kids and all moved home except Tom. Richard liked to invest

in property and rental apartments. June enjoyed being near her children especially when they made

her a grandma. Richard continued to invest in property but

passed away in 1985. June moved back to Las Vegas but

underwent back surgery and moved back “home”. She met a

man named Lloyd Hunter and they became great friends.

They talked on the phone a lot as he lived in Deer Lodge.

They would get together by visiting back and forth. They

went out to eat, fished, hunted, and camped together. Lloyd

had a boat and camp trailer that they would take to Flathead

Lake. They enjoyed each other’s company and they loved to

go dancing together. June lost Lloyd to a heart attack and

she is now committed to the “single” life as she is tired of the

heart aches associated with loss. She enjoys her life in

Canyon View Apartments. She still cooks her meals, goes

and bible and watches television. June likes living here and

she loves her apartment. Stop and say “Hello” to June the

next time you see her and have her tell you about babysitting

Judy Lu! That story is a doozie!

Groundhog day is Sunday, February 2nd. When the groundhog pops his head out of his burrow one of two things will happen. If it is sunny, he will see his shadow and it will startle him. He will retreat to his burrow and go back to sleep, meaning we will have a late spring. If it is cloudy he will not see his shadow. He will come out of hibernation and we will have an early spring. The official groundhog is Punxsutawney Phil in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

Do you have a talent you want to share with our residents? Would you like to help enrich our resident’s

lives through service? Volunteer and entertainment opportunities are available! Call Jessica! 363-2800

Groundhog Day A second grade class took a trip to the wood. They wanted to see the groundhog if they could.

The park ranger told the kids to be quiet. But no matter they sounded like a riot. “The burrow’s ahead kids. Now quietly creep.”

Out popped the groundhog… “Hush! I’m trying to sleep!” By: Dominic “Flominic” Farrenkopf

Mental Health Tip A balanced diet is essential to

maintaining good mental health.

Research shows that there are direct

links between what and how we eat

and how it makes us feel. Try foods

Coffee talks are scheduled February 25,26,27.

If you have concerns, please bring them with you.

John and Helen will be celebrating their 16th wedding

anniversary on Valentine’s Day, after an unusual

courtship. John, a retired Boeing flight test engineer,

was only halfway looking for a wife- if he happened to

find someone. John’s wife had passed away a few years

before. Helen, a retired special education and reading

specialist of 37 years, had no plans to change her single

lifestyle. The two saw each other at choir practice but

never spoke. Later on Helen learned that John thought

she was a married woman whose husband never came

to church. When Helen needed help purchasing and

setting up a VCR, another choir member asked John to

be a gallant man and help a damsel in distress. Cupid

must have shot him– as cupid showed up at his door-

step and at Helen’s home, which was just three block’s

from John’s place! John called Helen and they had a

shopping date the next day. They went back to Helen’s

home to install it. They sat on the floor and when it was

hooked up, Helen put her arm on his shoulder to say

’thank you’- and what did john do? He kissed her on

the cheek! Wow! But Helen’s response was. “No, no

romance!” Not ready to give up, he suggested places

they could go and then informed Helen that throwing in

a little romance would make it more fun. Helen kept

calling John “just a friend” while John called it “dating”!

After a couple months, they were no longer just friends

– they were more than friends! John came calling every

evening and stayed so long that Helen set the kitchen

timer, meaning it was best for him to go home when

the buzzer sounded. However, the timer was reset

several times before he departed! They were engaged

on Thanksgiving Day and married on Valentine’s Day,

1998. Friends and relatives were so surprised that they

flocked in from 9 different states. Since their marriage,

they have decided that God designed their marriage in

heaven. Helen calls John “My Prince” and John calls

Helen, “Sunshine”. John and Helen live at Sapphire.
