  • Santa Fe Vipassana Sangha Sangha Meeting Minutes, September 5, 2017 Pat DAndrea announced a non-violence training at the First Christian Church. Mikaela Barnes announced a fast on the 21st of each month, which is done on an individual basis by many people. Betty asked Joan Plummer to add the sign-up site for Alexis Santos personal discussions on the weekly newsletter. It is currently listed only on the flyer. Betty announced that the September 19th board meeting will be held at her house. Helene Aarons discussed this afternoons meeting with Rev. Tiffany Curtis at First Christian Church about the possibility of relocating SFVS to the church. Board members Helene Aarons, Betty Kuhn, and Joan Mitchell attended the meeting. Helene announced that the meeting was warm and they had discussed having Tuesday evening talks, Introduction to Insight Meditation classes and one-day retreats at the church. The sits could be in Fellowship Hall or the sanctuary. Helene described the parallel ministry that Rev. Curtis is creating to address social justice issues and diversity in the Santa Fe community. They discussed building a relationship between their community and ours, rather than them and us. Other advantages of this location as a new home for the Sangha include the easily accessible downtown location and plentiful parking. She said the pastor is also sensitive to people who have been wounded by prior experiences with churches or other religious groups. Barbara Schroder expressed a concern that the move should occur either before or after Arinna Weismans residency to avoid disruptions during the residency and Helene assured her that the timing of the residency has already been discussed and that the move will not occur during the residency. It was decided to hold the October board meeting at the First Christian Church to allow members to have a tour of the facilities and to discuss how to make the transition a part of our practice. The goals are to have a sensitive, conscious transition and to create relationships, not just a partnership. A one year agreement will be drawn up. Mikaela Barnes asked how the cost compares to the cost of renting Mountain Cloud Zen Center. Helene said a monthly fee for our regularly scheduled events was being discussed, rather than paying separately for each event as we currently do. There was some discussion of having Kathryn Turnipseed lead a ceremony on the final Tuesday at Mountain Cloud if the move is schedule for November 1st. The move date still needs to be negotiated but it will probably be November 1st, November 15th, or December 1st.
