I struggled for years trying to perfect the art of stained glass by reading books and making mistakes. I eventually had the chance to attend a workshop and couldn’t believe how much I’d missed. Why didn’t I just take the class in the beginning? I would have saved myself hours of frustration and hundreds of dollars worth of broken glass!

Our workshops are guaranteed to have you creating artistic pieces almost immediately, with little frustration and lots of fun. We hire only the best instructors to teach our work-shops and classes. They are not only excellent artists but they have also been gifted with an outstanding ability to teach. They are enthusiastic and patient, and definitely are the

cream-of-the-crop. Many of them are nationally known artists and instructors willing to pass down their tips, tricks and challenges to you the student.

We want your artistic experience to be fabulous, and we will do whatever it takes to make it that way. We want you to walk away after your workshop saying: “I’ll definitely be back again”!

Here’s to seeing you back in Santa Fe!

PAUL MURRAY

Dramatic Landscapes in PastelMay 10-14 (Mon-Fri) STUDIO/PLEIN AIRTuition $525. All Levels

As an instructor Paul focuses not just on light, but quality of light. An understanding of the emotional qualities of light is the differ-ence between a mere representation of a scene and an engaging and powerful image. Certainly color and design are critical to a success-ful painting, but we are creatures of emotion -- and sensitive use of light, like music, can touch us deeply. Our focus is to become aware of the tools and observational skills which will make this possible.

Classes will consist of daily demonstrations and on-site painting and instruction. Paul is noted for his unique textured painting sur-faces and he will demonstrate how these are made and how to use them for the best effects. The classes will spend quality time on im-portant issues such as turning plein aire notes into a studio painting and at least one lecture/demo will be devoted to

photography, value ranges, visual and photographic latitude and plein aire painting. This workshop will be divided into both studio and plein air work.

Paul MurrayPaul ran a successful Graphic Design studio until 2001 when he began

painting full time. He made the switch after winning a major international award, the Prix d’ Pastel (best of show) at the International Association of Pastel Societies. Since then he has won dozens of local and international awards including Best of Show in the Pastel Journal Top 100 competition in 2006. This year he is the juror for Landscape category in the Pastel Journal Top 100, the largest international competition for pastel.

Paul only teaches a select number of workshops each year. He feels the give and take of teaching is a rewarding experience for both the teacher and the students. It’s also a welcome break from the routine of daily painting.www.murrayfineart.com

JOYCE WASHOR

Big Art, Small Canvas - OilMay 19-22 (Wed-Sat) STUDIOTuition $425. All Levels

A complete painting experience without the usual expense! The traditional oil painting techniques will be scaled down to a

small format (3” x 4”) using the “alla prima” method. There are many advantages to painting small; the learning curve is greater, art supplies are cheaper, shipping and framing are less expensive and there are more opportunities for exhibitions and internet sales. There will be class discussion as well as daily demonstrations of color theory, composition and brushwork. Harmonious colors naturally evolve using complementary palettes. Painting principles covered in Joyce’s book, Big Art Small Canvas and videos. Emphasis on individual attention.

Joyce WashorJoyce Washor graduated from Rutgers University in 1972 with a degree in

Fine Art and had further instruction at The Woodstock School of Art and The Art Students League. She was included in the 2005 Still life Highlights issue of American Artist Magazine and was also featured in their September 2003 issue. Her Scottsdale Artists’ School workshop was featured in “Workshop Magazine”, Spring ’06. She is author of Big Art, Small Canvas: Paint Easier, Faster and Better with Small Oil Paintings, North Light Books, 2006 and cre-ator of painting videos. Washor is represented by The Lawrence Gallery (Scottsdale, AZ), The Aspen Group (Tokyo, Japan) and The Crane Collection (Cape Ann, MA). Her paintings are in many private collections.

JANE SHOENFELD

Visualizing the Abstract Landscape in Pastel and Mixed MediaMay 28-30 (F-Sun) STUDIO/PLEIN AIRTuition $325All Levels

Jane will guide you towards color, imaginative simplification and a vibrant and energetic use of pastel and mixed media techniques. Most class sessions are held in beautiful outdoor settings. Studio work will also be part of your art experience with plenty of time to experiment with new techniques combining pastel with acrylic. Jane emphasizes seeing the landscape in new and abstract ways: value exercises focused on shape and rhythm, and writing exercises emphasizing emotional connection, are all part of the loosening up process. Working fast and repeating the same image inspires stu-dents to get past clichés and create unique abstract landscapes.

Jane ShoenfeldShoenfeld’s work is represented in numerous private and corporate collec-

tions including NYNEX, Strock, Strock and Lavan and the New Mexico High-way and Transportation Department. Recently two of Shoenfeld’s abstract landscapes won purchase awards as part of New Mexico Art in Public Places Collection. Shoenfeld’s landscapes have also been included in exhibitions at the Las Cruces Museum, the Millicent Rogers Museum and the Brooklyn Museum.

WENDE CAPORALE

Portraits in Oil or PastelJune 7-11 (Mon-Fri) STUDIOTuition $575. Model Fee $75All Levels

The objective of this workshop will be an emphasis on represen-tational painting using various live models as our subjects. Students will choose their medium (Oil or Pastel) and will be instructed in the fundamental development of a painting with an emphasis on com-position, drawing, values and color.

The initial day of the workshop will begin with an explanation of the elements to consider when arranging the model. The set up, lighting, positioning of the model to create an interesting compo-sition will be addressed. Students will then select a position from which to paint for each session; they will remain in these positions for the duration of the workshop. This process will take place both in the morning and again in the afternoon using a different model.

Each subsequent day, instruction and critiques will be given at each artist’s easel with general discussions at various times to ad-dress specific aspects of the process. Students will be guided while simultaneously being encouraged to proceed in a fashion that en-ables them to understand what to think about and how a painting is developed.

On the final day, a question and answer session will occur to dis-cuss any aspect of portraiture not covered during the week. Students can also bring their portfolios for critiques of work done outside of class.

Wende CaporaleWende Caporale is a leading pastel and oil portrait artist, specializing in

children. Wende has been featured in American Artist, International Artist, the Pastel Journal, Portrait Highlights and Pastel Artist International maga-zines. JOSEPH BREZA

Exploring Georgia O’Keeffe Country en Plein Air - OilJune 14-18 (Mon-Fri) PLEIN AIRTuition $525Intermediate to Advanced Students

Join us as we explore Santa Fe and the surrounding areas; visit Abiquiu, the dramatic countryside that inspired Georgia O’Keeffe. Paint the adobes that make Santa Fe so special and get lost in the fresh air and clear blue skies.

Your days will be jam-packed with excellent instruction, new painting techniques and some fabulous scenery. Participants can ex-pect to finish a painting a day.

Joe will show you how to bring your paintings alive with knife techniques, texturing, impasto, wet on wet and layering. You will focus on shapes and colors and learn about perspective while ab-sorbing the absolute beauty that surrounds you.

Joseph Breza“Each artist creates his own language in color. I consider color to be the

foremost component of my painting. By laying down large fields and flatten-ing them out in some areas, I can draw out strong planes of color from the image. I am always experimenting. Sometimes I lay down thin washes to catch the power of the idea more quickly. I like to observe the reflections on a pond in the Spring and Fall. Winter interests me because the snow creates big, abstract areas. The more I get into the art, the more depth I find. The simplest idea, like Cezanne’s apples, is sometimes the most incredible.”

MARTHA MANS

Dynamic Watercolor PaintingsJuly 5-9 (Mon-Fri) STUDIOTuition $525. All Levels

The goal of this workshop is discovering what it takes to create dynamic paintings – a painting that will grab the interest and imagi-nation of the viewer.

No matter what medium you use to do your paintings, there are certain fundamentals that all artists must adhere to in order to relay the images that they want to express to their audience. An under-standing of VALUE RELATIONSHIPS seems to be the element of painting that is most lacking. So in this workshop you will explore how to use color value to give strength to your watercolor paintings.

You will work with water soluble graphite and watercolor to set a strong foundation for the paintings that you will be doing on day two and three. You will do exercises that will help you to translate color into value. During the workshop you will also learn to break down the subject matter of you photographs into the underlying ab-stract shapes that make strong design. Finally, Martha will take some time with each student to discuss his or her strengths, choice of subject matter and how to work with the lessons to create stronger and better designed paintings.

Martha MansMartha Mans is an accomplished painter in both oil and watercolor. She

has been voted into several art societies commemorating her achievements in both mediums. She is a member of the National Arts Club of New York and a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. Martha is a Master Instructor in oil and watercolor. She taught for the Art Students League of Colorado Springs, CO from 1992- 1997 and now teaches workshops throughout the United Stated and abroad. She is regularly asked to instruct at the La Romita School of Art in Terny, Italy. She was director at the Ghost Ranch Workshops from 1987 – 1992 and is presently the director and instructor on one of her most popular workshops aboard the clipper ship “Star Clipper” where students paint and sail in places like the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas.

ROGER WILLIAMS

Introduction to Painting in OilJuly 12-16 (Mon-Fri) 8-12pm STUDIOTuition $425.Beginner Students

The intention of this class will be to focus on finding the joy of painting with oil paints. Its primary goal is to learn to enjoy yourself while learning the techniques of painting with this ancient wonder-ful medium. All students are welcome whether you have ever lifted a brush or not. After experiencing this introductory class, the student will be familiar with most all the tools and many techniques neces-sary to jump into the rewarding world of oil painting.

Roger WilliamsAlbert Einstein once wrote, “Our task is to free ourselves from the delusion

by widening our circle of compassion, to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in all its beauty.” Perhaps this quote partially expresses why I am a painter and why I am driven to bring light and beauty to form.

Painting is a miraculous process for me, a truly mystical experience. It allows me, for a time, to slip inside a world of observation. Outfitted with nothing more than a few tubes of paint, a handful of brushes and a blank canvas, it is my job to embrace the essence of my subject wholly and try to experience what I am painting in that given moment. I don’t really under-stand how the inspiration comes only that it is the place where I seek not to delude myself by analyzing or criticizing, but rather discover truth while expressing what I see and feel.

RON MONSMA

Dramatic PastelsThe Portrait/Figure in Pastel (3 days)Dramatic Still Life in Pastel (2 days) July 19-23 (M-F) STUDIOTuition $525. Model fee $75Intermediate to Advanced Students

As artists, we find that regardless of the subject matter we are of-ten dealing with many of the same issues in our work-whether they are technical or esthetic issues. With this in mind, I have divided the workshop into two areas-one dealing with the portrait-figure and the other with still life. This is an exciting approach which allows us, not only to concentrate on two genres of painting, but to see how understanding the relationship between the two enhances our work. All instruction is geared toward each student’s individual ability and each student will find that regardless of their level of ability they can make dramatic improvement in the quality of their work.

Ron MonsmaRon Monsma’s dramatic work has been featured in a number of National

and International publications including ‘The Pastel Journal’, ‘International Artist Magazine’ and ‘The Artist’s Magazine’. He was also included in the Chi-nese book ‘Contemporary American Oil Painting’ published by Jilian Press and Northlight Book publications ‘Pure Color, The Best of Pastel’. In 2008 Ron received The Pastel Journal’s Best of Show Award in the Pastel 100 Compe-tition. Ron Monsma is Head of Drawing and Painting at Indiana University South Bend. Most recently Ron was awarded the Jack Richeson Best of Show Award in the 9th Annual Pastel 100 competition sponsored by the Pastel Journal.

Art and Life - Found Object SculptureJune 19-20 (Sat-Sun) OUTDOORS/STUDIOTuition $195. All Levels

With recycled and found objects we will explore the dimension of “doing what you can, where you are, with what you have” . Using this approach in creating a work of art we can engage in the adventure of finding the objects we will use, the mystery of what they will become and the grace of what is created.

This is a workshop to explore the humor, beauty and simplicity of what is, and where we focus on how we can give to something, that already exists.

Day one will be spent in the field and junk yards, gathering objects to use in our sculptures. Day two will be spent putting our treasures together to create a fabulous sculpture from our found objects.

Melissa IrelandMelissa’s latest 15 minutes of fame came recently when she created a permanent collection of sculptures for the

The Portrait Bust in ClayJune 28-July 2 (Mon-Fri) 8-12pm STUDIOTuition $425.Beginner Students

Learn to do portrait renderings at your highest level without the use of a live model. Fol-lowing instructions and a well formulated method, students will create a portrait rendering that is not only creative but structurally, anatomically and proportionally exceptional. This method unleashes the creative drive in the student and no two renderings will be the same but indeed unique. This method also allows personal creativity because it doesn’t rely on the student copying from a model. The student is allowed and encouraged to create their own individual with personality and individual traits. Students will work in oil based clay so there is no drying and distortion. Students and professionals of any level will benefit from this workshop.

Gary McElhaneyA UT Austin graduate, Gary McElhaney studied under renowned sculptors, Charles Umlauf and David Deming. His portfolio includes 14 bronze sculptures,

including eight public and commemorative pieces. The National Sculpture Society chose his figurative sculpture, “Naked Cowboy,” for exhibition in New York. His work has been exhibited at art galleries in Texas, Colorado, Connecticut and Arkansas. He has taught life drawing and sculpture at Elisabet Ney Museum, Austin Community College and the San Antonio Art Institute. His body of work includes over 200 photo-realist life drawings and illustrations.

“I’ve acquired the array of skills and experience world-class sculptors must have. I have spent countless hours studying and drawing the human form. Work-ing closely with foundries throughout the years, I understand the physics and engineering of manufacturing the finished piece. My extensive study of human anatomy, even working with cadavers in a UT science course, is integral to the caliber of my work. Sculpture is as much of a science as an art form.

“I feel strong emotion and am fascinated by simple shape. I have a strong interest in story telling, in all art forms. It is important that figurative sculpture create a private story within the mind of the viewer. It is this story, infused with the conceptual idea, that is paramount to the observer.”

Making Your Own Traditional Mineral PaintsJune 12-13 (Sat-Sun) OUTDOOR/STUDIOTuition $225. Supplies $35All Levels

The history of New Mexico is rich in cultural expression that has been inspired by the natural environment for as long as humans have lived upon this land. This can be seen in the art of the kiva murals throughout New Mexico where artisans gathered local miner-als and plants to create wonderful images that still resonate even today. Over time artists have come to New Mexico to paint the landscape because of its natural beauty. Georgia O’Keeffe was one of these artists that was truly inspired by the elements of the earth that surrounded her. This two day workshop will be an introduction into the process of making paints from minerals that are collected locally from around New Mexico. The workshop will focus on where to look for mineral pigments, how to gather the materials, and the pro-cess in which the pigments are prepared for making paints. The class will allow for artists to experience first hand the process of preparing minerals into pigments and mixing them with a variety of binders so that they can continue exploring the art of making paints for use in their own art.

This workshop will consist of two days. Day 1 will be spent out in the field gathering mineral pigments for use as a paint. Day 2 will be spent at the studio preparing the pigments for use as a paint.

Scott SuttonOver the past twelve years Scott Sutton’s passion for art has embraced the tradition of making paints that he uses in his own art, but also as an educational tool to connect artists with the natural environment that surrounds them. Scott is originally from Oregon and has spent the last five years in search of miner-als in the Northwest that he has used to teach on an artistic and cultural level the art of making paints to tribal members of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Scott received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Oregon State University in 1998. Scott recently relocated to Albuquerque to attend the University of New Mexico starting in the fall of 2009 in pursuit of a Master of Landscape Architecture that will enable him to weave together art and culture within public space and the natural environment. As an artist, he hopes to build a bridge that connects traditions of the past within the context of current social and entoday within human society. www.scottsuttonart.com

Making your own Spanish Icons - RetablosJune 2-5 (W-Sat) STUDIOTuition $4255. Supplies $45All Levels

A “retablo” is a two-dimensional painting of a saint or biblical event. In New Mexico the painting is usually done on a piece of ponderosa pine wood. In Mexico the paintings were made on tin. The retablo can hang by itself or in grouping on a wall, or it may be part of an altar screen. In this class the student will create a retablo in the Northern New Mexico style. Choosing the appropriate wood, paint and hand-made materials such as gesso and pinon sap varnish.

Krissa Moya LopezI was five years old when I created my first traditional Hispanic art pieces (straw applique on wood) under the

guidance of my father, Felix Lopez. Shortly thereafter, my father entered both my brother and I in the childrens’ section of the Traditional Spanish Market held annually in Santa Fe. Throughout the years, I have continued to participate in the market, but since 1994, I have been painting retablos along with doing straw applique.

Within my artwork, I incorporate tradition, creativity, inspiration and devotion. Traveling to different parts of the world has allowed me to observe the way of life of different people, which has broadened my viewpoints and expanded my creative talents.

Joseph Breza“Each artist creates his own language in color. I consider color to be the foremost

component of my painting. By laying down large fields and flattening them out in some areas, I can draw out strong planes of color from the image. I am always ex-perimenting. Sometimes I lay down thin washes to catch the power of the idea more quickly. I like to obeserve the reflections on a pond in the Spring and Fall. Winter interests me because the snow creates big, abstract areas. The more I get into the art, the more depth I find. The simplest idea, like Cezanne’s apples, is sometimes the most incredible.”

Introduction to Painting in OilJuly 12-16 (Mon-Fri) 1-5pm STUDIOTuition $425.Beginner Students

The intention of this class will be to focus on finding the joy of painting with oil paints. Its primary goal is to learn to enjoy yourself while learn-ing the techniques of painting with this ancient wonderful medium. All students are welcome whether you have ever lifted a brush or not. After experiencing this introductory class, the student will be familiar with most all the tools and many techniques necessary to jump into the rewarding world of oil painting.

Roger WilliamsAlbert Einstein once wrote, “Our task is to free ourselves from the delusion by

widening our circle of compassion, to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in all its beauty.” Perhaps this quote partially expresses why I am a painter and why I am driven to bring light and beauty to form.

I don’t really understand how the inspiration comes only that it is the place where I seek not to delude myself by analyzing or criticizing, but rather discover truth while expressing what I see and feel.

GENERAL INFORMATION - SANTA FE WORKSHOP ACCOMMODATIONS

SFSA provides accommodations for our international workshops in Mexico, Central America and France. In Santa Fe participants need to arrange their own accommodation. While staying in Santa Fe, we recommend the Sage Inn, which is within walking distance of the SFSA Studios, as well as Historic Downtown. They have given us a reduced price of $69/89.00 per night. Visit their website for more information www.santafesageinn.com.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONSSanta Fe is located at 7,000 feet in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The air is dry (usually about 15-25% humidity) and the sun strong,

so remember to wear a hat, sunscreen, and chapstick. Drink plenty of water; alcohol and caffeine are dehydrating. If you feel out of breath or sluggish, it’s probably the altitude. Dehydration may also cause headaches, so again, drink lots of water, try ibuprofen, and pace yourself.

TRAVEL INFORMATIONPlease check on your workshop status before making travel arrangements. Most major airlines service Albuquerque, New Mexico, which is approximately

60 miles south of Santa Fe. Once in Albuquerque, we suggest you rent a car or use the Rail Runner to get to Santa Fe.The Rail Runner makes many round trips daily between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and the station is within walking distance of the studio.

I have read the terms which are applicable to my workshop concerning payment, liability, and cancellations and I agree to the terms and conditions.
