We have wonderful new programs planned for you to fill your days with learning, fun and new friends. This is a special season in Santa Fe. The air will fill with the aroma of chiles roasting, the winter holidays are still a ways off and the kids (or grandkids) are back in school. What better opportunity to take some time for yourself and learn a new language, how to decorate a cake with panache or even figure out your iPhone or iPad?

BOTANICAL DRAWING AND PAINTING AUTUMN SPECIMENSStart, or continue, your botanical drawing and watercolor painting of autumn specimens. Learn specific graphite exercises that strengthen your painting. CANYON COLORS: THE PASTEL LANDSCAPE AT GHOST RANCHJoin master pastelist Jane Shoenfeld on an excursion to Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu. On Friday evening, the class will meet in the college studios, where the instructor will teach you how to create brilliant color with pastel techniques. On Saturday, the class will meet in Abiquiu. You will create expressive pastel paintings of these canyons and mesas. Please note, there is a $10 entry fee to Ghost Ranch, not included in the course fee.

FUN WITH WATERCOLOR IIThe beauty and challenge of painting in transparent watercolor can now be explored in this continuation of the “Fun With Watercolor” course. Any painter who has some experience in watercolor is welcome to join this class, which explores professional-quality techniques, composition possibilities and advanced strategies for beautiful watercolors. ALCHEMY OF MIXED MEDIAThis workshop is dedicated to the alchemy of materials. You begin with idea-generating techniques on paper, then move to surfaces using handmade gesso on wood panels. Pencils, pastel, watercolor, gouche, acrylics and binders collage into something larger. Exercises and demonstrations provide new approaches to technique and process. Group discussions and critiques are held to discuss the practical and the philosophical. Stimulate your muse or expand your art practices in this workshop. No experience is necessary.

OIL PAINTING BASICSLearn the basics of oil painting in this three-session class. The instructor will introduce color mixing, painting techniques to create form and how to compose a painting. Brushes, paint, canvas, palettes, mediums, solvents and varnishes will be explored. This workshop explains how to approach painting and provides a basis for creative expression.

WATER-BASED MONOPRINTSDue to its immediacy and painterly qualities, monoprint is highly rewarding for artists who don’t want to be encumbered by complicated technical processes. The class works exclusively with water-based media. These new methods eliminate the need for solvents and makes clean-up a snap. Explore a variety of approaches to the monoprint, including additive and subtractive methods and chine colle, the application of thin, decorative papers.

CRAFTSEnthusiasm and a desire to learn something new are the only requirements for our crafts classes. Learn new skills and make crafts to give as gifts or keep for themselves.

CALLIGRAPHY AND LETTERING ARTSLearn the art of beautiful writing using the simplest of tools, a chisel-pointed pen nib and ink. Practice the lower and upper case letterforms of italic writing. This hands-on course allows you to explore pen, ink and paper while practicing techniques. Finish class with your own samplers to keep and practice.

INTRODUCTION TO WEAVING – INKLE LOOMAn inkle loom is perfect for somebody who wants to learn basic weaving and loves textiles. It is essentially a small, portable belt loom, but strips may be sewn together to create innovative wall hangings, bags or whatever else strikes your fancy. The weave is warp-faced weave and much stress is put on the fibers so a strong cotton is recommended for beginners. To see examples or learn more about inkle looms, use Google.

SILVER JEWELRY USING METAL CLAYSilver metal clay is an exciting material consisting of silver particles in a nontoxic binder and water. It looks, feels and acts like clay. When heated, the binder and water burn away to leave 99-percent pure silver. Practice firing with a small butane torch, an easy process that takes just minutes. LAST-MINUTE GIFTSBe prepared for all possible party invitations or dinners this holiday season. Master tin artist Richard Gabriel will help students make picture frames or candleholders out of tin in true northern New Mexico tradition. Students enjoy creating traditional and sometimes highly inventive designs on tin artworks. Richard Gabriel is a practicing tin artist whose work is not only shown nationally but also extensively in this region.

ADDING COLOR TO HANDMADE PAPERPapermaking basics are the basis for learning how to color pulp before making sheets. Students will learn about natural vegetable dyes, synthetic dyes and pigments. The class bakes its own cakes and then focuses on icing and decorating. Before the ride begins, we go over brushing, saddling and getting a horse prepared for a ride. GEOLOGY OF LA CIENEGAJoin local geologist, Kirt Kempter, for a full-day geologic exploration of the La Cienega area south of Santa Fe. A two-mile, moderately strenuous hike to the top of Cerro Seguro (350 foot elevation gain) provides a spectacular view of the canyon carved by the Santa Fe river. The rocks in the La Cienega area tell of volcanoes both ancient and young, plus the rise of the nearby Sangre de Cristo mountains. Review the local hydrology, and join a discussion why many natural springs occur in the area. Hiking poles are recommended.

VALLES CALDERA ECOLOGY HIKE ON THE EAST RIMThis 7.5 mile, round-trip hike explores the overall ecology of the upper reaches of the Pajarito Plateau to the edge of the mountainous rim of the Caldera. On our way to Canada Bonita, we will walk through an edge of the Cerro Grande fire into Las Conchas fire path of June 2011. A primary driver of biodiversity in the Jemez Mountains, periodic fires, have shaped the landscape for millennia. Students will see the beginning of changes to the habitats and learn the importance of refuges and micro-habitats.

VALLES CALDERA ECOLOGY HIKE ON THE SOUTH RIMThis six-mile, round trip hike will explore the overall ecology of the floor of Caldera to the southern rim. PACK LIGHT CAMPING Enjoy a carpet of aspen leaves through the Pecos Wilderness by packing lighter in the cooler autumn weather. Making our home along the Rio Nambe below Santa Fe Baldy, we will have the opportunity to view the stars near the new moon phase. TEWA OLD HOUSESInvestigate the ecology of the Ojo Caliente Valley and how the ancestral Pueblo people wove themselves into this landscape. Get a broad overview of the valley and the four big sites that remain, then walk into an Old House site normally closed to the public, Ponsipa-Akeri, to view and discuss artifacts, room blockages and arrangements. A short hike out from the Old House, view the agricultural and cultural signatures on the landscape, experiencing how the ancestral Tewa people lived on the land. Pueblo stories, prior archaeological investigations and a brief view of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo bring together the continuity of culture in this area. Bring light hiking shoes, water, lunch and snacks. Photography is allowed during most of the excursion. Students travel in a college van.

GEOLOGIC HIKE AT THE OJITO WILDERNESS AREAThe Ojito Wilderness Area is a unique geologic landscape within an hour’s drive of both Santa Fe and Albuquerque. On this journey you will explore on foot the spectacular San Ysidro anticline, where Mesozoic rock layers have been folded into a dome structure, the core of which has been breached by erosion, exposing a variety of tilted, colorful rocks. A circular hike of approximately 4 miles takes you into the anticline and back along its eastern edge. The elevation gain/loss on the hike is approximately 500 feet.

HIKING ANTIQUITY, MESA PRIETA PETROGLYPH SITEThis is a three- to four-hour hike through some of the most stunning petroglyphs in New Mexico. Mesa Prieta is a major geological basalt formation overlooking the Rio Grande just north of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo in northern New Mexico. Along the mesa’s eastern slope is the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph site, on private land and containing more than 6,000 petroglyphs dating from Archaic (5500 B.C.) to modern times. The site is famous for its many shield figures, abundant flute-playing animals and historic images from Spanish settlers. Students are asked to make a $10 donation toward the upkeep of the petroglyph area.

HIDDEN PASSAGE TO COPPER CANYON, ABIQUIUThis one-day hiking adventure will explore a unique, hidden canyon in the Abiquiu area. A 3.5-mile round trip hike will take us through a small canyon that exposes brilliantly colored rock layers at the boundary between the Rio Grande Rift and the Colorado Plateau. We then ascend 400 feet to an overlook of Copper Canyon – a broad, majestic canyon well off the tourist trails. Wonderful photography opportunities with superb geology are in every direction. Field discussions will focus on the changing shape of the landscape in this region of northern New Mexico, as persistent geologic and erosional forces have sculpted the landscape over time.

Natasha Nargis Lara is an accomplished weaver and freelance journalist. She writes for the Santa Fe New Mexican, among many other publications.

R.C. Luna is a certified yoga and Pilates instructor, and reflexologist. She has been teaching at SFCC for several years.

Lauren Mantecon is represented by the William and Joseph Gallery in Santa Fe and has taught for the University of Portland.

Richard Marchese has written more than 600 proposals for more than $100 million in funds, spanning a 30-year career.

David Markwardt is the director of Teamwork in Action, the adventure program at SFCC. He also has a Master of Fine Arts in poetry from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Marga Matakovich, Ph.D. was the director for the College of Santa Fe’s Driscoll Fitness Center for 17 years.

Fernando Mayans oversees the Spanish-language program in continuing education at SFCC and is a native of Uruguay. He teaches advanced Spanish classes as well as being a translator for the Santa Fe Opera.

Grace Mayer has an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and has been making prints in Santa Fe for many years.

Teresa Mays was adjunct faculty at SFCC for 5 years and has her own consulting company for IT support, maintenance and installation of software, hardware and peripherals.

Richlyn McArthur has been teaching, performing and studying mariachi music for over 20 years.

Kate McCahill has an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts and has published in Best Women’s Travel Writing 2012.

Michael McGuire is an accomplished artist and teacher in Santa Fe.

Kathlene McGaw is a certified pet first aid instructor through Pet Tech Inc. and has been teaching both pet owners and pet professionals throughout New Mexico and Arizona. She is a certified pet groomer and the owner of McGaw’s Paws.

Jacqueline Munro has a BFA from New York University. Munro has taught at the 92nd Street YMCA and PhotoManhattan, among other places.

Peter Murphy is a retirement and estate planning specialist and has been teaching at SFCC for more than five years.

Tracy Neal has worked in all aspects of gardening in this region. Neal has been a nursery salesperson, greenhouse manager and landscape consultant.

William Neuwirth has a Master of Science degree in Biology and is a seasoned outdoor tour guide.

Anne-Sabine Nicolas, Ph.D., French studies, is originally from France and has been teaching French for over 15 years.

Cheryl Noonan teaches and performs in the Santa Fe area for both public and private events.

Erin O’Neill has begun or worked in many gardens around Santa Fe, including the Children’s Museum and Monte Del Sol Charter School.

Bob Pennington is the owner of Agua Fria Nursery. He has been advising Santa Feans about how to make things grow in this region for decades.

Ricardo Perez is a native Spanish-language speaker and has been teaching Spanish in Continuing Education for over 15 years along with overseeing SFCC’s language lab.

Kenneth Pinter has been teaching Microsoft Office classes in continuing education for over six years.

Arina Pittman grows most of her own food, herbs, homeschools, and makes clothing and candles. She is director of the Permaculture Institute, and has taught for Ecoversity.

Julio Polanco is a former Olympic team fencing coach for Columbia.

Pamela Quay has been teaching T’ai Chi Chih at SFCC for over 12 years.

John Rayburn is a firearms safety instructor and competitive shooter. He also has been teaching country-western dance classes for over 20 years.

Carrie Ronneau has a degree in interior design and studies encaustic painting with Ellen Koment.

Sonia Sanchez-Cuesta is originally from Spain and has been teaching Spanish at Capital High School and SFCC for several years.

Mark Sciscenti is a chocolate historian, who is passionate about fine chocolate. He has been studying and working with chocolate for more than eight years.

Jane Shoenfeld has a MFA from Pratt Institute. She has been teaching pastel landscape painting for 17 years.

Peter Sinclair is a noted regional historian who leads tours throughout the Southwest.

Kate Stalter is a columnist at TheStreet.com, Morningstar and Forbes, and a financial planner at Portfolio Wealth Advisors, a New Mexico-based boutique investment firm.

LeAnne Summers is a photographer and has been teaching credit and noncredit classes at SFCC for over 10 years.

Toni Sylvia began crocheting in 2005 and now sells her work on etsy.com.

Margo Taylor is an experienced traveler and chef, and recent graduate of the culinary arts program at SFCC.

n REGISTRATIONRegister now! Continuous, semester-long registration has begun. All registrations, whether online, by phone, by mail or in person, are being accepted now. Classes start throughout the semester. Find the latest Continuing Education class listings on our website at www.sfcc.edu.

Many classes fill quickly. We recommend that you register no later than four working days before the starting date of the class. You may register for most classes up until the starting date, but if you delay, the class may either be full or canceled due to insufficient enrollment. Registrations cannot be accepted at classes.

NOTEClasses will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Prices and room assignments may change without notice. Please check the website for current information. SFCC is not responsible for typographical errors.

Registration is not considered final until payment has been made.

FOUR WAYS TO REGISTERRegistration is not considered final until payment has been made.

1. Online (returning user). Returning students may visit www.sfcc.edu and click on JACK or the REGISTER FOR CLASSES link. You will need your user name and password to access your student account and register.

2. By Phone. Both new and returning students may register with an enrollment specialist by calling 505-428-1270 during regular business hours: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; and Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

3. In Person. Both new and returning students can register in the Welcome and Advising Center at SFCC on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

4. By Mail. Both new and returning students can mail a completed registration form along with payment to:

CLASS FEESContinuing Education classes are self-sustaining, and class fees must cover all program expenses. Fees are based on an estimated minimum number of students. Class fees are subject to change without notice. Please check the website for current information and review the refund policy before registering.

SFCC USERNAME AND PASSWORD SFCC assigns each student a username. You can get your username by going to www.sfcc.edu and clicking on the link to JACK. Once there, follow the instructions to find your username and password.

REFUND POLICY Class fees are automatically refunded in full when: • the class or workshop is full. • the activity is canceled. • SFCC rejects the enrollment application.

If you drop a class, your class fee is automatically refunded based on the following:

Classes of three or more sessions • If you drop a class before the second session, the full

class fee will be refunded.• If you drop a class after the second session, no refund

will be given.

Classes of one or two sessions • If you drop a class at least one day before the starting

date, the full class fee will be refunded.• If you drop a class less than one day before the starting

date, no refund will be given.

Some classes have special refund policies. This information is listed in the class description. Please allow three to five weeks for processing a refund.

CLASS CHANGES & CANCELLATIONS A class will be closed when it reaches maximum enrollment, so register early. Classes with insufficient enrollment will be canceled three business days prior to the starting date of the class, and those registered will be notified of the cancellation by phone. To make contacting you easier, please provide day and evening phone numbers with your registration. Refunds will be processed automatically for classes canceled by SFCC.

SFCC reserves the right to cancel any class. Class locations, dates, times and instructors are subject to change without notice.

CLASS LOCATIONS Classes are held at Santa Fe Community College and at other locations in and around Santa Fe. The location of your class will be noted on the confirmation you receive by mail.
