No man is an island.He (or she) can’t do everything

alone. We need help sometimes, a group of support, a posse with our best interests in mind. We often need a team to get things done and in the new book “Extreme Teams” by Robert Bruce Shaw, you might learn how to assemble your best.At grocer Whole Foods, employees work differently.Each department has a team (or two) that enjoys a cer-tain amount of autonomy, including the ability to hire new workers and the option to ask someone to leave the team. There’s a loose set of rules from Corporate that teams must heed but for the most part, says Shaw, Whole Foods “thinks teams when most com-panies think individuals.” And that, he says, is where profitable, “cutting-edge” businesses are headed: with teams, or with more employee wiggle-room when a team “is not needed.”Companies like Whole Foods, Zap-pos, Airbnb, Patagonia, and Pixar have learned that happy (and pro-ductive) employees have several traits in common: They have a “shared obsession” with the work and culture. They value co-workers who “fit” and

are cohesive with the group. And they embrace a kind of tunnel-vision within the Big Picture. These are good traits to have and are desir- able in many work-

places, but employers must be vigilant. These things can also spectacularly backfire.Workers with “shared obses-sion” can become too focused on work; it’s important to allow time for non-work. Having em-

ployees that all “fit” can create an atmosphere of

same; it might also cause competitive-ness, which may foster a force of fear-ful workers, especially if it’s tied to job security. And as for that security, more than one company has been sunk by unethical practices meant to “enhance… results.”Overall, says Shaw, are the two main things that “extreme teams” deliver: results and relationships. To get that, there are many fine lines to straddle and multiple paradoxes, including a comfort with discomfort, communi-cation, focus-not-focus, contradic-tion, and what he calls a “hard/soft” culture. It also involves good leader-ship and getting a lot of things “right.”

Before you start this book, take a deep breath. Pick it up and gently bloooooow the dust off it. Yep, “Ex-treme Teams” is that dry.While it’s true that there are take-aways inside these pages, it’s not easy to find them: there’s a lot of circle-talk in this book, and many conundrums. Granted, author Robert Bruce Shaw warns his readers about this, but it’s hard to ascertain how to overcome those issues because the business pro-files here tend to get in the way. We read about how these “cutting-edge companies” operate, but useful advice for implementing their practices can be confusing; add the “Will it work for my business?” question, and that could lead to a lot of frustration.Again, there are useful things inside this book, but it’s very much not for everybody or every business. If you try it, be ready for head-scratching, changes in thinking, and a gigantic paradigm shift, or “Extreme Teams” might just leave you adrift. n

Whether it’s hidden inside the marketing plan portion of your business plan you’ve just cre-

ated or it’s deeply rooted in your mind, know-ing who your optimal customer is and actively using that information can save you substantial amounts of time and money when you’re start-ing your business. We can all probably say that everyone is a potential customer, but narrowing it down to the specific demographic and psycho-graphic of customer who will be excited by your product or service and will actually spend their hard earned money with you is a process that is 100% necessary for 99% of local businesses.

Here is our quick and easy four-step process for determining your target audience:

1. Determine what your true passion and drive for doing what you do is

2. Define what it is about your passion, product, customer experience and “craft” that will set you apart from your competition or what may

be an industry standard3. Now, picture what type of person would im-

mediately say “Now that solves my problem,” or “This is exactly what I’m craving,” or “I’ve been waiting for this forever!”

4. Answer these questions: How old is this per-son? Where do they live? Where do they work? Where do they travel in a typical day? What are their hobbies or what do they do for fun? What is this person all about?

This is how you determine your core customer and figure out who will be truly excited by what you offer or will say “WOW” and raise their eye-brows when they hear about your business.

A visual that may also work for you in deter-mining your target audience is to picture 100 people of all walks of life standing outside your business that’s about ready to be unveiled. Once the curtain is removed and this crowd of people sees your business first hand, who of these 100 people will run or briskly walk through your doors? This group of people will be your target market, now it’ a matter of determining the fac-

tors mentioned in step four listed above.While this is a quick and easy take on the pro-

cess and you may have secondary target audi-ences, these five steps will help define who you need to be reaching out to. With this information in hand, you’ll now have a sense of the branding you’ll need to attract your target customer, i.e. the message, colors, fonts, style and overall per-sona your business communicates to the outside world via your logo, signage, décor and overall customer experience. Your work isn’t done as it will now be up to you to create the marketing plan for getting your message out to your target audi-ence(s). Knowing your target audience will also help you determine which marketing vehicles to use and how you should be using them to spread the word that your business is now open. n

For Residents in Care Facilities

Everyone smiles when those in skilled nursing facilities receive a visit from a friend! I-You Venture helps connect residents of care facilities to the community, as many of the men and women in these facilities never have a visitor from anyone they knew in their prior lives. Our volunteers help the residents to overcome the isolation and loneliness they feel when they enter a care facility throughour Friendly Visitor Program.

I-You Venture volunteers are involved in a broad range of activities including arts, crafts, music therapy, board games or reading, to the quiet intimacy of one to one visits. This is a tremendously rewarding visit for all involved. Volunteers benefit by sharing the experiences of others, while building caring relationships!
