A year and a half ago, a meeting took place between Jason Blumberg, President, and CEO ofGlobal Vending Group Inc.(GVG) and the Assistant Principal of Arthur O. Eve School of Distinction#61 from the Buffalo NY school district. During the meeting, they discussed their vision to bringbooks and families together.
The Assistant Principal of Arthur O. Eve School of Distinction #61 explained that there is aliteracy challenge within his school district. This challenge is partially due to a lack of engagementand excitement in reading books. He believed increased reading comprehension and engagementwill make a serious impact on the children’s future. He felt that getting students excited to read byvending their favorite books and being able to take it home will not only help increase a child’sliteracy but also improve family relationships through reading.
Mr. Blumberg took this to heart and worked extensively to make this dream a reality. GVGcustomized a vending machine called the Bookworm to vend books using a golden token. Themachine works by using a special golden token the kids are rewarded with for good behavior. ThisBookworm machine is currently in action at Arthur O. Eve School of Distinction #61 and many otherschools throughout the US. The engagement rate has been remarkable as more and more studentsare racing to the vending machine to get their favorite books. As more books are being distributednew books are taking their place, creating endless opportunities for children to learn and getengaged. We believe that this combination of vending books and reward system could bridge thegap between literacy and engagement.
