aims to reduce and ultimately eliminate food poisoning, food infections and other food-borne illnesses.
It embarks on a mission to serve, protect and continuously educate the public on clean food and water, sanitation and hygiene.

OBJECTIVESOBJECTIVESThe Clean Food Program aims to protect the safety
of the consumers and the general public by ensuring
the cleanliness and quality of food & water thus eliminating cases of food borne & waterborne illnesses within the city.
It also aims:
To promote awareness to producers, manufacturers, store owners, food handlers & others on food safety;
To provide comprehensive food safety training programs to the consuming public, and;
To continuously monitor the quality of foodstuff and water supplied within the city to ensure compliance to the standards set by the Sanitation Code of the Philippines.

As member of the MMDWQMC*, a governing body created to ensure safe drinking water supply for the residents of Metro Manila, sample collection and laboratory examination is undertaken on a monthly basis to monitor the quality of the water supplied by the water concessionaire, Manila Water Company Inc. (MWCI). Samples are taken at different sampling points within the city.

The Laboratory tests would determine the safety and quality of water, food and food products. This would also ensure compliance with existing food
standards, rules and regulations and to effectively pursue the activities under the Food Safety
Awareness Program of the City.

As a Model
Healthy City in the Philippines and in the Western Pacific Region, the World Health Organization has chosen Marikina City to be the pilot testing for the implementation of Food Safety Program . They have granted the amount of USD$30,000 for the said project.

PROJECT TITLE:
Optimizing a Model System for Linking Food Safety Improvements in Street and/or Market Vending to Activities Targeting Poverty Reduction (Implementation of safe handling practices and sanitation in food vending activities in the City Public Market)
Because of the successful outcome of the project in Phase I, the WHO granted another fund amounting to USD$16,500.
To integrate safe food handling and sanitation (personal hygiene) program in the requirement of establishing food business in Marikina Public Market.
1. To pilot test the model system approach (Food Safety Phase I) in safe food handling and sanitation (personal hygiene) among all food stall owners & vendors in the market place.
2. To improve the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points activity.3. To transform food establishments in the market place into a
healthy eating place.4. To develop the Sanitation Standard Rating System (SSRS)
based on the result of Food Safety Program I & II.5. To institutionalize the model system approach and duplicate
the project in other market place within the city.6. To evaluate and document the process done in the
implementation of the project.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
1. Creation and/or legislation of different Ordinances/Resolutions for the project.
2. Assessment of the Food Safety Program I among the stakeholders (23 eatery owner).
3. Training and Hands-On Demonstration of eatery owners and helpers Safe Food Handling & Personal Hygiene lecture by the
Sanitary Inspectors Hazard Analysis Lecture by the Marikina Clean Food &
Water Laboratory staff. Marikina Public Market lecture on its Rules & Regulations
4. Micro lending activity for stall improvements (related to Hazard Analysis)
5. Consumer Awareness Campaign (IEC mats., posters, food safety bulletin board, etc.)
6. Recognition of Beneficiaries7. Review and Evaluation8. Report Writing and Documentation
1. Hazard Analysis – includes the Kinds of Hazards, FATTOM, How Bacteria Multiply, High Risk Foods, TDZ, Process Flow of Foods and How to Identify the Hazards in Each Process Flow.
2. Personal Hygiene, Proper Hand washing, Cleaning & Sanitizing, Vermin Abatement Program, Government Rules and Regulations for the Food Industry.
3. How to identify double dead meat, hot meat, characteristics of fresh meat, fish and poultry and the Market Rules and Regulations.

Eatery owners and helpers are more concerned with the safety of the food they serve and concerned of the cleanliness of their food utensils, equipments, kitchen and food preparation area.
More customers to eat at the Marikina Public Market Food Court.
The project will be replicated in other eatery within the city.
