    History of Marikina

    Marikina’s history provides an interesting glimpse into the events that helped shape its

    evolution.The Augustinians were the first to arrive at the Marikina Valley in 1500, at the

    spot known as !horillo" in #arangka. $e%t &ame the 'esuits in 1()0, in a pla&e now&alled 'esus dela *e+a 'esus of the -o&ks. /ere, the 'esuits estalished a mission

    and uilt a &hapel.

    n 1(23, this puelo e&ame a parish known as Mari4uina. n101, with the &oming of

    the Ameri&ans, its name offi&ially e&ame Marikina. The early settlers lived along the

    riveranks and neary fertile farms. 6ith the industry of the natives, &omined with the

    know7how of the early !hinese settlers, the farms egan to produ&e ri&e and vegetales

    in great 4uantities until the valley e&ame part of the &ountry’s most pri8ed ha&ienda. #ythe 1th &entury, /a&ienda Marikina was owned and administered y the Tuason family

    and had e&ome the iggest in the *hilippines. 9or its massive si8e, natural eauty, and

    plentiful harvest, the ha&ienda was de&lared a mayora8go royal estate y the :panish

    &olonial government

    n 1223, Marikina’s shoemaking industry egan through the pioneering efforts of ;on

    youth leader ion the mid 120s, a&tively parti&ipating in the 123 and 12

    !ora8on A4uino. /is politi&al &areer offi&ially started in 122 as muni&ipal &oun&ilor,

    then vi&e mayor of #ayani 9ernando in 17001, and three7term :e&ond ;istri&t

    &ongressional representative. /e was the lone representative in 001 to 003.

    ;uring his se&ond term, he authored a law &reating another legislative distri&t inMarikina. The ena&tment of -A )() gave the &ity added representation in the lower

    &hamer, and provided additional udget to further MarikinaFs development.

    /e likewise spearheaded the ena&tment of -A 0, otherwise known as the 9ootwear,

    MarikinaFs shoe industry. /e is the primary author of seven other -epuli& A&ts whose

    &on&erns range from health and edu&ation to Dusti&e and laor.

    ;e >u8man otained his elementary edu&ation at /. #autista ?lementary :&hool and

    his high s&hool edu&ation at the -oosevelt !ollege, oth lo&ated in Marikina. /e

    re&eived his #a&helor of Arts degree, maDor in *oliti&al :&ien&e, from the Iniversity of

    the ?ast. /e was a law student at the same university when he de&ided to pursue his

    politi&al &alling.

    /e has re&eived various re&ognitions, in&luding the &on of Houth *ower Award from

    the $ational Movement of Houng on8aga, with whom he has four &hildren@ ;elan Andro,

    ;ean Anvielo, Allysia ;anella, and ;avid Alfred.
