Why is kannada rajyotsava celebrated?

This year marks the 58th Kannada Rajyotsava. The criteria for formation of Indian States is language. India became a Republic in the year 1950 and in same year linguistic provinces were formed. The state of Mysore is one such state in South India. The state of Mysore was created taking into fold various parts of the region, which were ruled by kings. Several districts in, now called North Karnataka and Hyderabad Karnataka were dissolved in the new state. The new state was named after Mysore, which by itself was a princely state. People of North and Hyderabad area did not accept the name Mysore. After prolonged debate the name of the state was changed to Karnataka on November 1, 1956. Late Devaraj Urs, the then Chief Minister of state took this landmark decision. Officially the new state was born on Nov. 1 and on this day every year birthday of the state is celebrated. This is popularly called as Kannada Rajyotsava or Karnataka Rajyotsava which is a government holiday. Rajyotsava means "birth of a state".

It is marked by the announcement and presentation of the honors list for Rajyotsava Awards by the Government of Karnataka, hoisting of the Karnataka flag with an address from the Chief Minister and Governor of the state along with community festivals, orchestra, Kannada book releases and concerts.Source: issaonline.edu

Singificance of Deepavali/Diwali

Celebrated as the festival of lights, in the month of Kartika, and is an autumn festival, which does not entail too many religious rituals as do some of the festivals. It is a festival celebrating good over evil. There are several stories that go along with the festival, such as Rama’s victory over Ravana and his triumphant return to Ayodhya, the victory of Goddess Chamundi over the demon, Mahishasura, and the popular story of King Bali’s defeat at the hand of Lord Vishnu (as Vamana).

People enjoy Naraka Chaturdashi, Lakshmi pooje and Bali Padyami. Traditionally starting off with an oil bath (yenne neeru), followed by donning of new clothes and lighting fire crackers. Sweets are exchanged between one and all along with greetings and good wishes for a successful year ahead. Oil lamps lit on all three nights, transform the surroundings that look like a million stars have come down to earth!
