SANDON PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Week 5, Term 1 - Tuesday 27th February 2018 FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK What a fabulous start to the year we have had! We have welcomed our Kindergarten students as well as many new students across all years. The students who enter Kindergarten in 2018 will spend most of their working life in the second half of the twenty first century. Futurists have predicted that many of the jobs they will be doing have not yet been invented. What we do know is that strong literacy and numeracy skills will be vital. Already Mrs Thomas and Mrs Kitchener are seeing students ready to and wanting to learn. I attended the Year 6 Leadership Camp at Thalgarrah and was impressed with the maturity and confidence of our Year 6 students. Even though the weather was not helpful to being inside the students participated in the activities with enthusiasm and have gained valuable skills to help them lead Peer Support sessions across the school. SANDON PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Week 5, Term 1 - Tuesday 27th February 2018

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

What a fabulous start to the year we have had!

Thank you to Mrs Strijland, Ms Etherington and Ms McCulloch for their work in making the camp so successful.

Whole school assembly

The Year 6 leaders have begun to run club activities during break times and other students are able to choose to join in if interested. Last week students turned up to participate in soccer, dance and science activities. The activities were interesting and very well organised. Congratulations Year 6. The Year 6 Leaders will receive their badges on Monday 5th March at a ceremony that will include them presenting a Sandon School S.H.I.N.E. badge to each of their Kindergarten buddies.

Mrs Bull’s Year 3/4 class is an example of a classroom designed to suit the learning needs of a variety of learning styles. Students do not sit at traditional tables and chairs, they are able to use stools, beanbags,

cushions, chairs, or boxes while they are learning. The students have opportunities to move around the room and use different seating or standing stations as needed.

In Mrs Frizell’s and Ms Lawrence’s Year 3/4 classes students spend their mornings engaging in English activities

that strengthen and build on their literacy skills. Each student has their individual needs catered for within the teaching and learning activities and literacy stations.

Mrs Palfreyman, Mrs Clark and Mrs Debreceny also use literacy stations for students to work in small groups and individually. Students are building their skills and knowledge in English as well as learning how to learn.

Marketing and Promotion. I have asked Kirralee Dwyer to take on the role of Marketing and Promotion. We determined that there are three streams we are currently using to promote and market our school and each serves a different purpose. This newsletter should be about the students, an opportunity to acknowledge what they are doing and to showcase their work, either by work samples or photos. The Schoolbag App should be for parents/carers to gain a range of information about the school. It will include permission notes, changes to routines, visitors and upcoming events. The website and the Facebook page are a combination of

promoting ourselves to the outside community, acknowledging student achievement and general

information related to all aspects of schooling. The website and Facebook page are still undergoing change, although we are adding news stories each week.

So, enjoy the work samples, look at the photos of students engaged in a variety of activities that have occurred over the last five weeks and join me in thanking the dedicated staff who come to work each day prepared to teach and support your child/children to love learning and to S.H.I.N.E.

Denise Smoother Quiet games in the library, at second break, with Mrs Carolyn Gadd are very popular.
