MY STORYI was was 18 and dragging a coil of electrical cable across a stage. The 2,000-seat college theater was empty, except for a handful of minimum wage stage crew like me and the stage manager, Lew, whoran the whole place. I put the coil in a pile, and waited for Lew to tell me what to do next. When Lew noticed me waiting for instructions, he didnt give me the instructions I expected.

With a little more initiative, Bruce, you could be a crew

chief. Instead of standing around waiting for me to tell you what to do, figure out what needs to be done and do it.

    Then he walked away.

To understand the impact of Lews words on me, you need a bit of background. Out of the 60 or 70 students who worked in the theater (yes, thats it above), two were crew chiefs. They were like mini- Lews, acting as a stage manager or lighting supervisor. Lew might as well have told me that I could be President of the United States, it would have seemed just as out of reach. I had been hired with dozens of other students to help with the brute force work of hanging curtains, pipes and cables in the brand new theater.

THE POWER OF INITIATIVEJust before Lew spoke to me, I thought I was the perfect employee. I listened to every word Lew spoke, and did exactly what he told me to do. But his words revealed

something that never occurred to me: initiative matters.

That was all it took. By my junior year, I became a crew

chief. It wasnt all clear sailing for example, I had trouble figuring out how to manage my friends but it was my

first lesson in the power of initiative.

A few lucky souls are born with initiative. But most people

have to learn about it, like I did. If you are new to a job, or new to the workforce, once you understand the way things work, try a bit of initiative. Do more than the bare minimum. Look for opportunities to do more than others expect of you, and see if you can figure out how to make

    faster progress.

USE YOUR HEADThere is an art to having initiative. If you race ahead blindly, you can end up doing work that didnt need to be done, or you can even wreck the progress that someone else has achieved. In the Fine Arts Center, I probably had to undo about 100 of my initiative efforts, because I hung

the wrong lamp, moved the wrong set piece, or put away the wrong cable.

So use your head. Watch the most accomplished people around you for hints. Ask questions, and listen carefully to the answers. Dont be afraid to make mistakes, as long as your goal is to be more helpful and productive than you were last week.

We waited for you like a new born child,

9 and a half months exactly on this little isle.

    Expectations were high and great,

And once you opened it was worth the wait.

Sandals Barbados is now a dream come true,

And we cant wait to share our property with you.

Thanks to the Stewarts for their vision,

And now we team members stand ready to carry
