The California Gold

Rush

The Gold Rush (1848-1855) began when gold was found. The people who came to California looking for gold were called 49ers. All the people looking for gold quickly made the population of San Francisco grow from 1,000 to 25,000 people. The population continued to grow in the years following. Within a few months the city had many problems with gamblers, prostitutes, and criminals.

The San Francisco earthquake of 1906

On April 18, 1906 a major earthquake hit San Francisco. The quake only damaged a few builds, but a lot of the city was destroyed due to a fire. Many people died and the earthquake is remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in United States history.
