Lent begins on Ash Wednesday — this week on the 14th. Masses will be at 8:15am, 2:15pm (with school), and 7:00pm. This is a great way to begin the season and to join with our community as we pledge our commitment to unite more fully with Jesus.

This weekend, we have a copy of the new Matthew Kelly book for each family. As with past Lents, he has a daily online reflection to go with it, free of charge. Simply go to dynamiccatholic.com for the link.

Please, one book per family for the first week until everyone has a chance to get one.

Brett and I will be leading you through Lent with the “H-T Challenge”, providing a weekly theme with some dazzling homework that is sure to challenge each of us. I am not sure I am looking forward to this, but know in the long run that the Holy Spirit will use this to draw us each to a deeper relationship with Jesus.

Hello, everyone. If you’ve been following the news this week, you may have seen stories about the controversy created by Pope Francis’ words concerning the clerical sexual abuse situation in Chile. To vastly oversimplify things, while visiting Chile, Francis defended the reputation of Bishop Juan Barros, who’s been accused of covering up for a pedophile priest. Francis claimed that no witnesses have come forward to present testimony against Barros. However, the AP has reported that back in 2015, one abuse survivor wrote a letter to Francis about his experience, and handed it Cardinal Sean O’Malley, who reports having passed it along to Francis. So the question being raised is whether or not Francis is being honest here.

If the AP’s version of things is correct, there’s no doubt that Francis’ reputation will suffer a significant hit. In light of that, I think it’s a good time for Catholics to remind themselves of just what it is that we believe about the papacy. The caricature many believe is that Catholics see the pope is perfect, unable to make a mistake, commit a sin, or fail in his judgment. The truth is far more human. Popes are sinners, just like everyone else. Hopefully, their (usually) long years of faith and service have led them to spiritual, intellectual, and moral maturity, but this isn’t guaranteed just because a man is elected pope. Being pope certainly does not mean a man will never error or sin.

When we talk about Papal infallibility, it’s important to remember that this is an official charism, not a personal

charism. In other words, it’s a gift of the Holy Spirit that a pope may exercise in virtue of his office, under certain strictly defined conditions. Typically, we would say that to teach infallibly:

1. the Pope must be teaching about a matter of faith or morals (and not, for example, about economics, current events, politics, history, ecology, etc.);

2. he must explicitly state that his intention is to teach infallibly and definitively on a particular matter (so most papal teaching [even on faith and morals], while deserving our of attention and respect, is not infallible teaching); and

3. the Pope must personally teach the doctrine in question (i.e., a document written by one of the Vatican congregations, for example, or by a group of bishops, cannot be considered infallible – unless, of course, the Pope were to make the document his own).

Basically, the Church has held from the very beginning that the Pope will never lead the Church into error. This is a belief rooted in the promise of Jesus himself that “Thou art Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it” (Mt 16:18). While a formidable gift from Christ to His Church, this gift nevertheless does not change that fact that popes are human, and thus (most of the time) all too capable of human error.

If you have kids in the Beaverton School District or keep up on news within the District, you know that several new schools were opened this last school year. These openings caused some pretty significant shifts in the boundaries served by each school. The opening of the new Mountainside High School, which we support weekly through the backpack program, caused major boundary changes for Beaverton High School. As a result of those changes, Holy Trinity is now within their boundaries.

Because of this inclusion, last fall I was asked to participate in their community partner meetings. I am impressed by the approach that the principal, Anne, takes at both running the school and recognizing how much more can be done with the help of others. I have had the pleasure of being in the halls a couple of times as the students transition from one classroom to another. The energy level is noticeable and uplifting. The interaction between students and teachers, including the principal, is one of mutual respect, caring, and commitment. It is clear the students are there to learn and the teachers are there to help them succeed.

You may also recall that Holy Trinity, along with other churches and organizations, helped ensure that the families who had been identified as homeless at BHS received two weeks worth of food to help them during the break over Christmas. That effort was considered a major success. Most recently, the partners met to discuss how to handle the upcoming spring break. We learned that the number of homeless students had grown to 110 and that the overall Free and Reduced rate (those number of students who meet the federal guidelines for poverty) is close to 50% of the student population. Not surprisingly, all of the community partners present simply asked, “How can we help?”.

Over the course of the next few weeks, answers to some logistical questions will be provided and the real work will begin. Spring break begins with the close of school on Friday, March 24th. The 6—8 bags of food for each of the 110 families will be delivered and ready to go early that week. Led by our friends at Bethel Congregational Church, a lot of work will happen between now and then. I will let you know how we might be able to assist over the coming weeks. The students, teachers and staff are all working hard to learn and grow. Let’s help them achieve their goals.
