On Jan. 27, dignitaries joined San Antonio Water System in celebrating the introduction of a truly new drinking water source to our city — desalina-tion. This drought-resistant source is a huge leap forward in water independence for San Antonio.

While most people associate desalination with sea water, the SAWS project pumps salty – or brackish – water from deep in the Wilcox Aquifer under South Bexar County as the source for this purified drink-ing water. Desalination pushes the salty water through reverse osmosis membranes with holes that are 100,000 times smaller than a human hair, removing 97 percent of the salts and minerals in the water.

The newly added 12 mil-

lion gallons per day is enough water to supply 53,000 house-holds.

“Desalination is another tool in our water portfolio that we are using to serve a growing San Antonio,” said SAWS CEO and President Robert R. Puente. “There is an ocean of brackish water under our feet unaffected by drought.”

The desalination plant is located at the H2Oaks Center in southern Bexar County. The center also functions as an educational facility, featuring a tour layout for educational opportunities and an onsite research facility available for universities.

H2Oaks Center is the only location in the country where three different sources of water are produced. It desalinates water, pumps and treats Car-rizo Aquifer water, and stores

Special to La Prensa

The American Heart Associa-

tion’s Go Red For Women and its national founding sponsor, Macy’s, are asking for your sup-port by participating in National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 3 during American Heart Month.

Why Go Red? Cardiovascular diseases kill nearly 1 in 3 women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds. Fortunately, we can change that because 80 percent of car-diac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action.

That’s why we ask that you wear red on National Wear Red Day and encourage women to make the time to “Know Your Numbers,” which include: cho-lesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index (BMI). It’s knowledge that could save their lives.

Also, on National Wear Red Day the American Heart As-sociation has set a goal to raise $800,000 to support essential educational programs and criti-cal research that can save more lives.

Here’s how to help:• Wear something red• Go to Heart.org/GoRedAn-

dGive and give to the American Heart Association on Feb. 3

• Encourage your friends and family to do the same

Additionally, the American Heart Association is inviting businesses to light up red during the month of February.

You are invited to wear red and share photos on social me-dia. American Heart Association San Antonio can be tagged at @ahasanantonio on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Visit GoRedForWomen.org or call 210-810-3100 for informa-tion about Go Red For Women and American Heart Month.

91.3 K-LOVE Radio is en-couraging the San Antonio community to love on others during the month of February. K-LOVE created the #LoveOn-SA campaign in February of 2015 to love on different people in the community. Each year, from Feb. 1 through Feb. 14, K-LOVE loves on individuals through random acts of kind-ness and encourages their listen-ers and the city of San Antonio to do the same.

Lizette Miller, leads event team representative, began the #LoveOnSA initiative in 2015 with the intent of loving on peo-ple who do not always receive the recognition they deserve.

“This campaign was created to show people in the community that we care about them,” Miller said. “K-LOVE Radio cares that you work long hours. We care that you risk your life for our community, and we care that you serve us dinner or lunch at your place of work. We care about who you are and want to say thank you for what you do.”

In the third year of #Lo-veOnSA, K-LOVE will love on firefighters, police officers, civic leaders, food service workers, the homeless and many more. K-LOVE posts pictures each day on their Instagram and Twitter accounts, @KLOVESanAntonio, to share with their audience who they love on each day through-out the 14 days of #LoveOnSA.

“We want to encourage the

San Antonio community to love on someone that might get over-looked; someone you might not normally love on,” said Miller. “It’s the small acts of kindness that have the biggest impact.”

K-LOVE has provided five simple ways the community can #LoveOnSA during the month of February.

Five ways to #LoveOnSA:• Give a stranger a compli-

ment.• Pay for the person behind

you in line.• Write someone a thank you

letter.• Pay for a military person-

nel’s meal.• Call a family member and

tell them you love them. For more information, visit

The NBA announced that San Antonio Spurs guard Jonathon Simmons has been selected to the 2017 BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge. The

second-year Spur was chosen by the league’s assistant coaches and is the first Spurs player to be selected for the Rising Stars Challenge since Kawhi Leonard in 2013.

Simmons is averaging ca-reer highs of 6.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists in

18.1 minutes this season in 44 games. After scoring a career-high 20 points (8-14 FG, 3-5 3FG) at Golden State on open-ing night, he has now scored in double figures in as many games this season (10) as he did all of last year.

Making the San Antonio ros-

ter after two seasons with the Austin Spurs, San Antonio’s NBA Development League team, Simmons is now the eighth Spurs player to be se-lected to the Rising Stars Chal-lenge since the event’s inception in 1994.

The BBVA Compass Rising

Stars Challenge will feature the league’s top rookies and second-year players competing in a U.S. versus World game format for the third consecutive year. The game will tip off the 2017 NBA All-Star on-court festivities on Friday, Feb. 17 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
