Should the inevitable happen tonight or Sunday night and the Spurs win their fourth NBA championship in nine years, do you get the feeling that vast sec- tions of the country want us to apologize for the victory? To apologize for how the Spurs got there, how they played, the city they play in, the personali- ties of their future Hall of Fame coach and super- star, for their “lucky” breaks, for the favoritism that was shown them by officials, for the world not ending before they won? Perhaps it’s just a conse- quence of listen- ing to too much national sports talk radio — which can numb your brain — but there is a burge- oning and sniping attitude out there that suggests that the team, city and fans should feel guilty for the way the champion- ship was won. Before this current playoff run, the Spurs had already been liv- ing with the tag of being “bor- ing” and “dull,” a team of tal- ented and nice guys who folks outside of San Antonio were in- different about. But along came the Western Conference semifinals and the Suns hit the fan. In an instant, Bowen, Ginobili and Horry had earned reps equal to those of al- Qaida’s leadership, and the en- tire team was transformed into a terrorist brigade out to destroy Western basketball as we know it. Then, because two Suns broke a rule and each had to miss Game 5, there were actual sug- gestions that there was a con- spiracy by the NBA to ensure that the Spurs got to the Finals. That suggestion was laughable to any Spurs fan with an infe- riority complex — and every Spurs fan has an inferiority com- plex because we know in our hearts that the league would pre- fer to have teams in larger media markets in the Finals. Now that the Spurs are in the Finals, we’re forced to listen to daily lamentations about low TV ratings and how, as in their pre- vious championship years, the Spurs can’t make the nation care enough about them to watch. Oh, and there’s still the whining cho- rus bellowing that Phoenix got robbed and that the Spurs were lucky they didn’t have to play the Dallas Mavericks. Having secluded myself so that I could diligently study the many reservations people have about the Spurs’ imminent victory and having meditated for many hours and understanding why they feel the way that they to do, I have but one question: When is the victory parade? The haters aren’t going to spoil this for us. We’ve got one major-league sports franchise in this city, we suffered with them for a quarter of a century before they won their first title, we’re in a small market, we will never be the darlings of the league, our city’s name is never more pub- licized than when the Spurs are in the Finals, they give us joyous respite from our everyday strug- gles and they have created a dy- nasty. And we’re supposed to feel guilty about this? Call the Spurs a boring and dirty team propped up by the commissioner’s office in NBA headquarters if they must, and let them mention that San Antonio is an awful place to winter and that you won’t find any history or good Mexican food here. Gloating is unnecessary, but so is apologizing. Should the Spurs win a couple of more titles and fewer people across the nation watch, so be it. Only a few cities get to relish these kinds of cham- pionship runs.
