The building acts as a graft into the topography of the site and extends into the river, takingadvantage of as much river front access as possible. The concept of the graft is continued internally with the locally-sourced oak and sandstone building materials that also occur on the site.

The research-basedcommunity and educational program of the RiparianWetlands Research andLearning Center connects the community to the river andprovides opportunities forcommunity education,volunteering, and restoration of the riparian systems. The center is within the territory of the 10-20 year vision plan of the RiverFirst proposal set forth by the Minneapolis RiverFrontDevelopment initiative and isstrategically placed to keep theRiverFirst vision movingnorthward. Passive strategiesdesigned in the shape andorientation of the building were used to minimize energyconsumption.
