It has been awarded 2011 International Sedan of the Year at the New York International Auto Show. Will Volvo make it to the top safest car in the world? Undoubtedly, I think it will. After attending a live demonstration of its “City Safety system – known as City Safe” I am totally convinced.
The “City Safe” system is powered by a range of safety equipments such as camera and radar. It is housed at the central top section of the inner front windscreen. The scanning of any human shape that resemble like a tree shape is calculated over 50 times in the blink of an eye. It therefore detects the one which are likely to blunder into the collision path of the car.
The slow speed safety system that best performs at under 30km/h applies emergency braking to the dummy inflatable human being. There is a reason for that, if it is set towards a higher speed, the system will intervene more often. I tried several times in crashing to the dummy pedestrian, all under
AWD30km/h. The S60 stops just in front of the dummy without posting any injuries to it, not even a touch. The system also applies to large objects such as the back of a car or even towards a moving object such as a moving car which has stopped but still maintaining some variable distance from the S60. I must applause the engineers behind the idea.
The active cruise control (ACC) is another interesting instrument in maintaining a safe speed and auto adjusting the distance with the car in front of you. No matter whether it is the slowing down of the car in front of you, or another car just cuts into your path, the system will adjust a safe distance and speed for you. Another benefit of the system is that, when the car in front of you may be a reliable driver, then, your Volvo will be just tail gating the front car in a safe queue. When the ACC causes the S60 stops less than 1 second, the system will pick up speed and roll away automatically. When it stops more than 3 seconds, the driver just has to refresh the program or just use the

accelerator to restart the ACC. All out of a sudden, crawling traffic condition in peak hours could become a fun exercise.
The car itself is very attractive. It has given up a more conventional and conservative style. The shape of the car is now very fluidic and looks sporty with large alloy wheels and treatments with its aerodynamics features. Currently, it has three engines: the 4 cylinder petrol known as T5, the D5 turbo diesel and the T6 6 cylinder petrol with all wheel drive set up. Undoubtedly, the S60 has its distinct Scandinavian character. In a certain way, it looks better than some popular European brands.
While driving the S60 T6, its gives excellent information about the road condition, the adjustable power steering feeds sufficient information and helps the driver to steer according to one’s preference.
6 speed automatic is responsive for any road condition especially under the sport mode. The road holding ability is remarkable with firmer springs and dampers. The chassis responds well with corning.
The interior is still very attractive, as the integrated information system also shares the large colour monitor that can be used for both navigation and relaying images from the reversing camera. A new camera placed in the front of the grille can also give a 180 degree of vision when driving out a narrow lane way to detects oncoming traffic or pedestrian. Sitting below the monitor is the forever neat and tidy floating waterfall style audio, air conditioning, telephone pad and various controls. It seems to be slightly crowded with
additional features and functional buttons, but still remains fresher than most other European brands.
What I like about the S60 T6 AWD is its all wheel drive system that holds the road so firmly that it is hard to loose control. And that is the reason for buying an all wheel drive. Apart from that the strength of the car is its safety features, such as blind spot information system and lane departure warning. However, with the new and improved engines plus 6 speed dual clutch automatic gear box, the new Volvo is sportier than ever.
Recently, there is an even more performance related S60 T6 R Design. Its power has been increased to 242kW and the torque is 480Nm. So anyone who previous related over safety concerned Volvo driver?? and now raised their eye bow for a more performance or racing related Volvo S60.
