CHRIS---- Russell Patterson is an SAME Fellow and has worked for more than 15 years supporting military installations in the areas of environmental compliance, Geospatial Technologies, and SRM design. On the Resiliency front, he as managed and supported projects focused on energy independence and infrastructure resilience at Joint Base Charleston and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. Mr. Patterson also serves on the Coastal SC GIS Consortium, a combination of state, federal, and private GIS practitioners focused on mapping the impacts of climate change and sea-level rise along SC’s coast.

As stated previously, Information Sharing is the primary way the Charleston Post advances the efforts of resiliency. In February we had Dan Klingshirn with the Charleston District present on his career experience with supporting humanitarian projects under DoD’s Theater Security Cooperation Program in Asia and East Africa. Responding to and recovering from Natural disasters, as well as designing low maintenance facilities focused on community resilience were significant aspects of these projects.

Cybersecurity is not only a major concern for our clients, it’s a major concern for your industry partners as well. Our April Presenter was Scott Cave with Atlantic Business Continuity Services. This informative presentation focused and business continuity and disaster recovery and highlighted several key items that we in industry need to consider with respect to how we execute our business, including recovering from both cybersecurity and natural disasters.

This topic was well received by the membership for several reasons. 1) The principals presented were highly applicable to Federal, State, and Private sector clients, 2) It was had regional and local significance to our post members, and 3) provided a wealth of information and resources on this timely topic.

Resiliency is on the minds of all those in the Charleston Area as Hurricane Season arrives every year. The Charleston Post is please to have active participation from the Charleston District who is actively engaged in Hurricane preparedness at the Local, State, and National Level. We have incorporated this into our annual program at the post by having leadership from the Charleston District present on their rehearsals and tabletop exercises. This Q&A session provides insight and awareness to our post members. While not executed in 2017, we have also had presentations from the Coast Guard Sector Charleston and local and state Emergency Management officials.

For the members of the Charleston Post, Resilience is at the forefront of our professional careers. From Sea Level Rise, to Hurricanes, to Earthquakes, to Terrorism, Members of the Charleston Post routinely encounter construction and design challenges related to resiliency. We utilize an annual board retreat in December to plan the subsequent years activities and topics in an effort to engage our membership, and inform our government and industry partners of our collective capabilities.

• Critical Infrastructure Protection & Resilience Europe (CIPRE), 2nd – 4th October, will once again be hosted by the Municipality of The Hague in The Hague, Netherlands
