Bob Marini Takes His 8 wt on the Road Wednesday night, nothing special on your honey do list, then it must be time to head out to the Salinas Airport to hear what Marini has to say about fishing for Steelhead. In addition to Bob’s presentation. There’ll be fish reports, good food, friends to talk with, a dynamite raffle and plan-ning for upcoming outings. Hope you can all be there ……………….ed
Here we are in September
folks. It’s transition time from sum-
mer to fall and I can feel it in the air.
It’s a great time for fishing and de-
spite the drought, fishing opportuni-
ties are still out there. Steelhead and
Salmon are starting to make their ap-
pearance in the north county. Also a
lot of bugs choose the fall to hatch and
do their reproduction thing, which can
make for some great fishing if you can
find some viable water. As I think I
said at the beginning of the year, it’s
going to be slim pickings finding good
water in our state’s river systems. I
had mentioned that it would be smart
to find tailwaters to fish. Well, it
might be more then smart, it may be
the only game in town. With most non
tailwater CFS flows in double if not
single digits it’s hard to find good
wild water to fish. I guess maybe all
those dams aren’t always such a bad
thing.The Dreamflows website
showed the Merced below Briceburg
at 1 CSF. My heart almost stopped
when I saw that. The Truckee ,near
town was down to 43 CFS.and the
Walker was only at 23. It’s all going to
make for some “interesting” changes in
the next few years. All we can do is
pray for rain, but more then that,
PLEASE do your part to conserve wa-
ter, educate your friends and neighbors
on what they can do to help.
This month we have a member
speaker, which seems to often turn out
to be some of our favorite programs.
Bob Marini will be giving us some tips
and advise on Steelhead fishing. His
tips and tricks will include preferences
on rod weight and design for chasing
the north country's silver pigs. Bob
loves to steelhead fish and has many
years of experience doing just that. I
encourage members to bring photos
and stories to share. As a newly ad-
dicted Steelheader, I would love to
hear about other peoples experiences
and who doesn’t love to see a photo of
a monster Steelhead.
We may have a white ticket at
this month’s meeting, So I hope you’ll
all plan to come out to the Landing
Zone on Wednesday night to see if
your number is called ….... deCoy

What’s going on in the world of fly fishing and tying?
Fly of the Month No Fly Tying This Month
The Ever Popular Dr.B.P. Flytyer (Bill Pshide) is apparently missing in action. At last report this
month’s fly tying session will be taken over by the likes of Dave Gambeta and Rod Sanchez. The word
which is swirling around like oak leaves in a cyclone is that these nerd-do-wells will be doing there best to
educate club members on the fine art of interfacing with the electronic world and more specifically learn-
ing how to down load their fish pictures to the club web page. Now if you haven already seen the holes in
this story, just keep reading... First and foremost Where is Doc B.P. Flytyer anyway? We fear that the
good doctor, a Shining Light of Sanity and Stability may well have been abducted but an unsavory sub-
faction of club members intent on reeking havoc on the well established integrity of our fish club. There
can be little doubt that this notorious sub-faction is intent on dwarfing the mission and purpose of the club
to suit their own unhealthy designs, to a point where the club will have only scant resemblance to it’s for-
mer self. After all how many travel trailers does it take to pour brown liquor into a dirty glass? Call me a
alarmist if you will, but remember: you read it here first.
On the other hand maybe Bill just went on vacation and couldn’t be here for fly tying and these
fine fellows are stepping in, out of the kindness of slow beating hearts. Which every story you choose to
believe...be sure to come on down to the Salinas Airport Board Room on Wednesday night September
17th. Find out the TRUTH! If you do venture out, remember the immortal words of Elmer Fudd:: “Be
vewy vewy cafull” …...ed.
What? No fly of the month? How can that be?
Oh, okay.. We’ll have a fly of the month

Ralph Cutter’s E/C Caddis is One to Try
This is probably the most popular fly designed by Sierran Flyfisher, Ralph Cutter, and introduced to the public in 1981. The E/C
Caddis is an emergent/cripple caddis pattern developed for the large caddis hatches that frequent the Truckee River. At first, he tried
to utilize a palmered body similar to the Elk Hair Caddis but noticed that the sillouette underwater was not similar to the naturals
since the fly rode too high on the surface film. Ralph switched to a parachute wrap and utilized the Elk Hair wing as the wingpost.
The fly rode deeper within the surface film and looked much closer to the naturals. Another important feature to this fly is the two-
toned body which provides contrast and attraction. Ralph believes that the darker abdomen coloration creates an appearance of the
shuck still encapsulating the lower part of the caddis body. The shuck consists of Z-lon material which absorbs water and allows the
rear portion of the fly to sink within the surface film. The wing can be either Deer Hair or Elk Hair. Elk Hair will flare less than Deer
hair and this can give the fly a better caddis profile but Deer Hair will have a better floatation and might be a better choice for faster
moving waters. The most common colorations are Olive Brown/Caddis Green, Tan/Olive and Black. Since the E/C Caddis resides
low in the surface film, it is often used on slow-moving waters. Ralph will apply floatant to the leader as well as the wing, thorax,
and hackle to help with floatation on swifter waters. Since the fly is difficult to see an indicator is often usefull. The E/C Caddis has
built a reputation as an excellent caddis pattern throughout the world and remains one of the best for the Sierras
Potpourri
