As part of her degree,
which is predominantly in
research, Saldivar is looking
forward to publishing her
own work focusing on
student academic success.
She is interested in
“bridging the performance
gap for minority students.”
As a minority student
herself, Saldivar understands
the struggles some students
face and would like to give
back to her community. “It
really helps to have a
mentor, if I didn’t have Dr.
Haruna, I wouldn’t have
done this. You can go as far
as you want to go,”
explained Saldivar.

A new academic
experience awaits Karina
Moreno Saldivar ’05, ’08
this fall. She will be attending
the Ph.D. Program for Public
Administration at Rutgers
University in Newark, NJ.
Saldivar was notably selected
along with seven other
students to be a part of a
very prestigious program and
will be the first Hispanic
female to attend the
program. “I still can’t believe
it because Rutgers’ Ph.D.
program is very selective and
has a very high success rate,”
explained Saldivar.
Even though she had not
anticipated being one of the
few chosen to attend the
program, Dr. Peter Haruna,
Associate Professor of Public
Administration and Associate
Dean of the College of Arts
and Sciences at TAMIU,
insisted that Saldivar submit
her application. Dr. Haruna
guided Saldivar throughout
most of her academic career.
“He helped me through the
whole process,” stated
Saldivar.
A couple of weeks later, the
good news was accompanied
with the fact that she would
be receiving a full scholarship,
as well as money for her living
expenses. “When I received
the news, I was in such shock,
I felt my eyes swell up with
tears,” stated Saldivar.
Her parents and also her
husband, Christopher
Saldivar ’09 are very excited
and supportive of her
achievement.

Dickerson receives Cliff Dochterman Award .J Michael Dickerson ’98 recently received the Cliff
Dochterman Award for his contribution and service to the Boy
Scouts. The Cliff Dochterman Award is presented in honor of
Cliff Dochterman, the President of Rotary International, to
recognize an individual Rotarian or Rotaractor. The recipient must
be a role model and provide service and leadership to Scouts.
He received his MBA in International Trade at TAMIU.
Dickerson, is not only an attorney and an inspiration to his scout
members, he also tries to provide the same service to other
members of his community by advising them on how to achieve
financial stability and maintaining it through his book and his
column in the lifestyle magazine “LaredoSol.”

Concert Jam Fundraiser Benefits Student Scholarships
The weekend of May 15th and 16th brings new excitement to The Association,
with Gummifest 2. Carlos Delgadillo ’09 and underscore_entertainment will be
hosting several bands, local and national during the two day event to be held at
Average Joe’s Sports Bar in Laredo, TX.
Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the TAMIU Alumni Association which
benefit TAMIU student scholarships.

With the team's and players’ success, one individual's performance could not go
unnoticed: head coach Daryl Vincent earned the top award, Coach of the Year.
He has led the TAMIU Women’s Basketball to a 32-45 (22-20 Heartland
Conference), and this year, the team played its first season as an active NCAA
Division II member. Under Vincent’s leadership, six players earned All-Heartland
Conference honors and six have earned Academic All-Conference honors.
Vincent was named the 2009 Heartland Conference Coach of the Year.
Vincent coached for 11 years as an assistant, before heading up the Dustdevils in
2006. He was the assistant coach at Texas A&M Kingsville for five years. While
there, he served as assistant for the women’s team for two seasons and assistant for the men’s program for
three years. The women’s team improved their records while Vincent coached, and the men advanced to
the NCAA South-Central Region for the first time in eight years during his second season as coach.
Four players Vincent recruited during his tenure at TAMU-Kingsville have gone on to play professional
basketball. His recruits also included three All-Americans, two Lone Star Conference (LSC) Players of the
Year, LSC Newcomer of the Year, LSC Freshman of the Year and many other all-conference honorees.

Isabel Cantu ’03 has plenty to celebrate. She and her husband Joel exchanged vows in Monterrey,
Mexico on March 18th. The two will reside in Monterrey.
Maria Angie Cisneros ’04 is a project specialist with the City of Laredo’s
Public Access Center. She is involved with United Way, Kidney Foundation of
Laredo, Lulac #12 and several other local organizations.
Lygia Perez Ruedas ’05 is starting a new job this month with US Immigration
and Customs Enforcement as an inspector.
Luis Quijano ‘06 currently works for Commercial Metals Company
in Laredo, TX.
Sabrina Martinez ’07 celebrated first anniversary of self-owned
salon and spa Ishq.
Wenceslado Wes Cantu ’08 works with the Easter Seals in
McAllen, TX. He is a Family Services Coordinator with their
Early Childhood Intervention program that provides families with
tools to incorporate instruction and therapy
for children’s day to day activities.

April. She is currently pursuing her Masters
degree in Public Accountancy.
