NATIONAL OUTLOOK

I’m usually a strong advocate of ‘client entertainment’. But I don’t mean the usual “let’s get drunk together at the local bar” kind. That usually leaves you with nothing more than a hangover and some awkward explanation to do the next day – inadvisable.

Firstly, I believe that it is not just about “entertainment”. It is an opportunity to build real relationships. Because I believe that at the end of the day even though it’s about business, people want to

In the Rod Laver Arena of life, being ‘human’ always wins.

deal with people.

I can’t remember the number of times in the past when I happen to be the ‘buyer’ that I often feel a sense of disconnection when the salesperson just harps on about the product / service.

Instead, invest the time to get to know me. Find out what my needs are. Ask me about how I operate. Whether you’re selling newspaper subscriptions or billion-dollar deals, I believe the same should apply.

That’s why at a recent client event where we hosted a superbox at the Australian Open Women’s Grand Final, I invited not just our clients but also their partners.

Sure, it’s a great event with a big wow factor so people would most likely want to come anyway. But I don’t think anyone woud like to be stuck in a room and be constantly badgered to buy, not even for a Grand Slam!

I invited their partners because I saw it as an opportunity to get to know them as a person, and also, for them to get to know me. I invited my partner Paulo so that people could meet him and get to know more about me and my life (by the way, I didn’t see any eyebrows raised when I introduced Paulo – not Paula!).

With the revered Rod Laver Arena and the best tennis before us, there were great conversations to be had – some of the best stories included someone going to an ACDC concert! No awkward silences, no formalities (other than the first handshake) and no exclusive conversations. Everyone mingled on a human-to-human level: be they clients or partners.

I thought that was that until I came into the office on the following Monday to some emails no just from clients, but also partners, thanking M&T Resources for thinking of them. To me, I didn’t think of it as anything out of the ordinary. I was only treating other people how I would like to be treated – like a human being.

Was it worth it to invest so much in a client event only for it to feel like some friends hanging out? ABSOLUTELY. Gaining a few friends whom I’d not hesitate to spend time outside of work with, and who also happen to do business together – that’s like winning double Grand Slams! ₪

“No awkward silences, no formalities (other than the first handshake) and no exclusive conversations. Everyone mingled on a human-to-human level: be they clients or partners.” “Because at the end of the day even though it’s about

business, people want to deal with people.”

REGIONAL OUTLOOK (ACT)

What were the most actively hiring government departments and why do you think so?

We are recently getting a lot of demand for Java candidates – particularly at the Department of Human Services. They have some major projects underway that have large budgets to match. We anticipate more Java roles coming from DHS in the next few months.

The Department of Immigration & Border Protection and the National Blood Authority are also actively hiring Java candidates – so the demand is not isolated.

Demand for CRM candidates is strong as always, and still hard to source. It’s an extremely short market in Canberra. That said, we’ve recently successfully placed a CRM Consultant for a client.

There’s also been an increase in Communication and Change roles coming through from numerous Departments. The recent big amalgamations of Departments (e.g. Customs and Immigration) means a lot of changes need to be managed.

What were some of the most exciting technology / business projects in the last quarter?

Clean Energy Regulator has continued to be one of the strongest employers. We currently have quite a few contractors working on its Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) project ‒ a new policy initiative by the federal government. And our candidates are loving it!

CER responds and acts fast in the recruitment process - which means candidates get into a role quicker. Our candidates are also loving the exciting projects and the working environment. Being a small government agency (compared to the likes of DHS) means the workforce has more interaction with senior executives and stakeholders.

We have also recently placed some Business Analysts into the Department of Immigration & Border Protection to deliver services across multiple projects.

The great thing about Immigration: as it is a big department, they have developed a “HUB” for Business Analyts. Essentially, it means all BAs are part of a service hub where they can be quickly and easily mobilised into any other projects when they are available. Our candidates have told us that they really enjoyed this aspect as it means they get a lot more variety and exposure.

What challenges were your clients facing in hiring people in the past quarter?

As previously mentioned, our clients are really looking hard for good candidates in the CRM space. There’s a real shortage in here – so much so that we’re always trying to source from interstate.

The high overall demand for technology candidates also means candidates now have so much choice and hold the balance of power. As a result, rates are increasing.

What were some of the most in-demand job roles?

There’s ceaseless demand for Business Analysts. While that’s so, there’s also been a shift to more technical roles, especially Microsoft stack in the CRM

and BI space. Testers, change managers, project managers, and developers continue to be in demand.

What can employers look forward to in the next quarter?

Budget announcements in the next few months will be a critical time as it might mean departments have more project funding.

With the end of the financial year approaching, some government departments might also go on a ‘spending spree’ in the bid to get the candidates they need on board.

After June, more candidates might enter the market as some projects end coinciding with the Financial Year.

What can candidates look forward to in the next quarter?

Longer term contracts coming up after June.

With demand outstripping supply, candidates in the ACT can forward to more choices. Candidates will strong skills and good government experience will not need to worry about finding their next contract.

While the initial contracts offered may not be very long (at the moment, most are offered until the end of June), we believe that most will be extended.

Any other tips you would offer to clients / candidates?

Clients need to adapt to what is increasingly a ‘candidate market’. Candidates can affrod to be more demanding as offers keep piling in. Strong benefits and working environment, in addition to offering competitive rates, would be a start to ensure you attract the best. ₪

REGIONAL OUTLOOK (NSW)

What were the most actively hiring industries and why do you think so?

The start of 2015 has been strong across all industries that we work with. Telco and State Government have seen the highest percentage growth, with construction and utilities not far behind. The biggest demand for us continues to be in the financial services sector where digital and regulatory and compliance projects are driving a large amount of demand.

What were some of the most exciting technology / business projects in the last quarter?

We have worked closely with a number of clients recently on full website re-design. Traditionally we have provided mainly Project Managers and Business Analysts, however in the last eighteen months we have been placing more CX and UX staff as well as front-end and mobile developers.

We are working with one of Australia’s largest digital media organisations on an exciting analytics project rebuilding the dimensions around classified ads. We have placed a number of data analysts, visualisation developers and platform specialists over the last six months. This project is going to overhaul the classified ads section and help the client to remain the market leader in a rapidly evolving, highly competitive market.

What challenges were your clients facing in hiring people in the past quarter?

PAUL HUTCHINSON Regional Director [email protected] NSW

Top talent in the Sydney market is snapped up very quickly. I have had a number of conversations with frustrated clients where they have identified peopel that they want ot bring onboard, only to miss out due to being slowed down by internal processes. My advice to hiring managers is to make sure that everyone involved in the hiring process understands the part they play in this process and that timelines are agreed up front and adhered to. A poor recruitment experience for a candidate often gets talked about, which may then adversely impact your ability to attract top talent in the future.

What were some of the most in demand jobs in the past quarter?

UX Designers, Mobile Developers (IOS and Android) and Agile Project Managers.

What can employers look forward to in the next quarter?

With Easter out of the way this is a time of year where there is a fair amount of stability and less distractions typical of holiday periods. Projects appear to speed up now with most industries trying to accomplish their goals before the end of the financial year. In government, we see an increase in spending due to the old “spend it or lose it next year” approach to budgets.

This is a time of year that I recommend leaders to take a good look at their teams and assess whether they have the right people working for them. If you don’t have the right people in your team and you have genuinely exhausted efforts to get them up to speed, then it is probably the time to take action. For us, this is the time to look at passive candidates in the market and connect them with the right career opportunities.

What can candidates look forward to?

For the last five years, Quarter 3 has been the busiest period of the year in both contract and permanent recruitment in Sydney. This year the market is incredibly buoyant with significant investments across all sectors in IT spend. As mentioned before, Government increases spend during this time of year, Telco are in full flight with projects and most financial institutions are increasing spending and hiring. The only industry sector we often see a slight dip in usually is Utilities and Construction, however it seems like this year may buck the trend. This is due to an extremely active construction sector in NSW with major projects continuing to be funded as well the ongoing technology advancements in the utilities sector.

As I mentioned before, this is the time of year when candidates will be reflecting on their careers. Just last week, a candidate shared with me, “When you look out the window at 5.30pm and it’s dark before you leave work, you tend to then start comparing what you’re doing with the fun summer months that’s just passed.” As such, the conversations we are having with candidates are much more geared towards career advancements and candidates wondering if they are in the right role or right organisation.

Quite often those who make the decision not to move are those who feel satisfied in what they do and that they’re with a great company. They use this time then to finetune their career paths and plan their professional development. ₪

REGIONAL OUTLOOK (QLD)

What were the most actively hiring industries and why do you think so?

Queensland Government has been very busy as departments try to utilise their budgets prior to the end of the financial year.

We weren’t sure what to expect with the change in Government in January, but the Labor government has started where it left off three years ago by going on a hiring spree. It’s the busiest that this sector has been in years.

The utilities sector has also picked up over the past six months after a quiet couple of years.

What were some of the most exciting technology / business projects in the last quarter?

The Department of Transport & Main Roads is implemeting the New Generation Rollingstock program, a single largest investment by Queensland to significantly increase train fleet to meet the growing demand for rail services.

Whilst the project is in Transport, it is a “train of the future” project that will also affect Queensland Rail. These two departments have completely different systems and processes, and the program will attempt to manage these new trains and the old trains on the old network. In what can be a political environment, this will be a huge challenge.

MARK LIMBRICK Regional Director [email protected] QLD & WA

We have recently placed a Program Manager as an SMS Associate into Suncorp who will be working on its Core Banking Systems Replacement. This is a huge project as Suncorp has committed to spending $300m on the new Oracle Core Banking platform by June 2016.

What challenges were your clients facing in hiring people in the past quarter?

Microsoft Dynamics CRM skills and Cloud/Office 365 skills seem to be short supply and high demand. Digital roles, and Front End Developers in particular are a constant challenge!

What were some of the most in demand jobs in the past quarter?

The struggle continues to find good Business Analysts and Project Management candidates. We are also recruiting for a number of roles with SMS in the Dynamics CRM and Cloud space. That area is certainly picking up.

We have one client that is on a major hiring spree, actively recruiting permanent iSeries Developers and Front End developers.

What can employers (clients) look forward to in the next quarter?

I am not sure they will look forward to it, but we expect a lot of staff turnover in the next 6 ‒ 12 months.

A number of candidates that we know of were anxious / nervous about making a move while the market was challenging. With conditions improving and if the government keeps their hiring spree up, it will add a lot of confidence to the whole market. This will

encourage people to make a move, which will have the corresponding effect of driving up rates.

What can candidates look forward to in the next quarter?

The Queensland market does seem to be picking up across both the public and private sector.

As mentioned before, I expect that this increased demand will create more staff turnover and more opportunities. This is likely to have a flow-on affect to candidate rates and salaries.

Any other tips you would offer to clients / candidates?

I would keep an eye on what is happening in the government sector and GOC sector. It’s been fairly quiet for the last couple of years under the Liberal National Party government, but the last 3 months have seen a spike of new hires.

It is possible that this is purely down to time of year, but I also expect that we are seeing a change due to the Labor government coming back. Over the next 12 months I expect we will see less of a reliance on offshore resources and stronger investment in technology.

Staff update

Account Manager, Michelle Lewis, will be going on maternity leave in June and Laura Hanson, Health Account Manager, will be going on maternity leave in July. We’re actively recruiting for Account Managers right now to complement our team. If you know of someone, contact me! ₪

REGIONAL OUTLOOK (VIC)

KEN KWAN Regional Director [email protected] VIC & SA

What were the most actively hiring industries and why do you think so?

The financial services sector is really picking up in demand over the past quarter.

Typically, business analysts are highly sought after in this field and we are seeing many good Business Analysts being engaged on long-term programs of work.

Some of the programs were compliance and regulatory. Other programs were related to technology refresh or long-term technology implementations.

The utilities sectors is also buoyant right now. Some organisations are improving their CRM systems and are looking for very technical Salesforce or Microsoft skills. Agile skill are also in high demand in utilities.

What were some of the most exciting technology / business projects in the last quarter?

Our company continues to do some exciting work with Fuji Xerox Australia. A recent project was the consolidation of cheque scanning as to streamline the banking process.

To do so requires compliance measures in dealing with the RBA and to be certified in the Coin Banking Network. Currently, only the major banks can do this on a state-by-state basis, but this process will be

nationalised. The work is done on a Java Platform, up into Stirling suite of products which includes Connect Direct.

M&T Resources has been key in providing contractors with the following skillsets:

» .Net Developers

» Documentum Developer

» Development Lead

» Test Analyst

» Solution Architect

All contracts last until the end of June when the project is will finish. However, I think there might an opportunity for extension.

What challenges were your clients facing in hiring people in the past quarter?

Clients with permanent vacancies are looking for staff that not only have some domain experience in a particular system or industry, but also have sound communication skills.

More and more clients are expecting candidates to have previously successfully completed a role similar to what they are interviewing for. We are not seeing a lot of flexibility around technical capability and proficiency.

I would suggest that for clients recruiting highly sought-after skills, there needs to be a lot more flexibility around the demands for skillsets and more emphasis on hiring based on potential to develop and learn. Also, we need to take into account transferable skills that are valuable in any projects.

What were some of the most in demand jobs?

MS Dynamics CRM skill is one of the most sought after right now. The growth of Microsoft’s CRM solution in the market today is leading the demand.

This rise in demand is consistent across the utilities, financial services and other service-centric industries.

Rates for a mid-level Dynamics Developer would be pushing $650/day now. With this rise in rate, it is getting increasingly difficult to hire Dynamics Developers on a permanent basis.

Clients seeking quality data analytics professionals will also find it increasingly difficult to obtain good talent. There is consistent demand for experienced Hadoop, Qlik and Tableau analysts from a variety of industries.

As previously mentioned, there is strong demand in the Business Analyst space. Good Business Analysts on the contract side won’t last beyond two weeks in the open market before they secure their next role.

Agile BAs are in even high demand and may only have a week on the market before being snapped up. BAs would certainly be one of the ‘safest’ professions in Melbourne right now.

What can candidates look forward to in the next quarter year?

It is still quite a challenging market for some candidates if your skills are not the ones in demand. However, salaries are relatively stable across most categories and should continue to be so in Melbourne. The upwards trends in the Program Management space make it a good space to be in. ₪

Future of Project Management Meetup

PMBOK, Agile and Waterfall, PRINCE2, Lean: with so many project management methods out there that have been evolving for the past 25 years, how does one know which one works? The lack of statistics documenting the correlation between the usage of these methods and project success further adds to the uncertainty.

It’s also almost impossible to examine whether success / failures were a case of the abilities of the people using them or entirely the method’s drawbacks.

So what’s right for the future of Project Management? In February 2015, M&T Resources and our parent company, SMS Management & Technology, hosted a Project Management Office Meetup to gather the

best minds in the Australian industry to discuss those questions.

Held at the 41st floor of our Melbourne office, the event was attended by more than 40 people from leading Australian organisations, including the likes of ANZ, Telstra, NAB, AMP, AXA, CUB, Origin Energy, Australian Unity, and BUPA.

The night was facilitated by Colin Ellis, an M&T Resources contractor and founder of the Meetup community. The Meetup featured these speakers:

» Michelle Lac, Project Management Practice Director PM – SMS Management & Technology

» David Mallam, Head of Design – SMS Management & Technology

Key learnings that I took out from the event were:

1) Culture drives outcomes Project management methods shouldn’t be driving the objectives and outcomes of the project. Culture plays a big role because with the right culture, people should feel empowered to do what’s right. The

methods should serve only guides.

2) Get the team right Culture also drives the way you hire / engage the project management team. With a right team that has the right values, everyone would be rallying to achieve the same outcomes.

3) Start it right Once a team is engaged, there should be a ‘proper’ kick off for the team. There were some inspirational ideas to engage and motivate teams thanks to David Mallam’s Lego and Footy tips. Some of the attendees told me that they were already incorporating them in their project kick-offs!
