Dear Parishioners,
Advent always reminds me of Robert Frost’s poem, “The Road Not Taken,” which ends with this verse: “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”
I am not sure when I came to love Advent, but I am sure that it flows out of my love for the underdog. For reasons I do not fully understand, I am energized rather than saddened by Advent’s seeming inability to capture our contemporary culture.
Advent cannot exist in the material world. The forces of materialism are marshaled against it. Advent is not a time for the insecure. It requires a dedication to what is right rather than what is popular. Advent is an invitation to reflect on our desires, on what we think will make us happy. It is an invitation easily rejected because, although we fear we are building our future on the wrong foundation, we are more afraid of the changes necessary to find the right foundation.
Advent is all about desire and joy. We all want to be happy and joyful. We choose those things we think will make us happy and joyful. We choose those things we think will make us happy, that will fill us with joy. Our joy is fleeting and our happiness short lived. Nevertheless, we keep chasing after the things we think will make us happy. We pile up our possessions, we revel in sensory delights, and we cling to friends and lovers. Our possessions decay, our senses get bloated, and too often our insecurities suffocate the people we love.
In theory we know that true joy and happiness can only come from God. We need to desire God. We need to make God a priority in our lives. And someday we will. That is the real problem: someday never comes. Someday is an excuse; a lie we tell ourselves. Someday is the way we anesthetize ourselves against the truth. Until someday becomes today, our lives float in a sea of irresponsibility. Advent invites us to repentance. We are invited to rediscovered the central role that God wants to play in our lives. The only question is will this year be the time that Advent moves from someday to today?
For many parishioners this past week, someday turned into today as they received God’s mercy in confession at the Taize prayer service. For all of our school children, someday turned into today as they experienced God’s grace in reconciliation at our Friday penance service. All I can say is that every time I hear confessions God gives me some of the greatest joy of my life. Being with people who have been set free from their sins, fears, anxieties, and shame is as liberating as it is joyful. When will that someday turn into today for you?

Last Thursday was St. Nicholas Day and St. Nicholas arrived for his yearly visit to St. Rose of Lima School. It is a tradition at St. Rose for each student to leave a shoe in the hallway on December 6th and magically their shoes are filled with candy! At Christmas time, we have several special traditions that we carry on at St. Rose and have the privilege to because we are a Catholic school. Most recently was our Christmas Concert which incorporated a Living Nativity. This was a wonderful performance done by our Grade Seven pupils. All students participated in the concert which also took a lot of time and hard work to prepare for from our students and faculty. A special thanks to Ms. Viera and Mrs. Lorraine Gagnon as both of them were instrumental in coordinating this event.
As it is Advent season, each Wednesday Father along with our Grade 8 pupils lead us in a special prayer service. This week we gathered in the Foyer which is an intimate environment and brings all of the students and staff together as a community. As advent is a time to prepare for the Christ’s birth, pupils in Grades 3-8 along with staff had the opportunity to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Father Matt arranged for this to happen and also made sure that teachers reviewed in class an Examination of Conscience.
Finally, last weekend’s Breakfast with Santa was a big success. Thank you to all that attended the event and helped organize it too. It is always nice when both the school and parish come together as one community. If you did not purchase an Eight Month Club Membership at the breakfast, you may contact the parish or school offices 739-0212 (parish) and 739-6937 (school), or email my Administrative Assistant Mrs. Larocque [email protected]

Ministry Highlight: Reaching out to Refugees
The Social Justice Committee of St Francis Parish has an active and vibrant ministry that tends to the needs of refugee families in our local area. They have most recently been involved with helping a family of six from the Congo. Volunteers have spent time in the home of this single dad and his five children in order to learn what kind of assistance might be helpful to them. In preparation for the winter ahead, committee members will take this family shopping for winter coats, boots, and underwear. They are also able to provide transportation once a month for food shopping. Close contact will continue in the months ahead as volunteers look for more ways to help. If you want to get involved or learn more, please contact Sandra Savoie (401) 440-0725.
