Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2016

Although a lot of people might think Memorial Day is a holiday just to have a long weekend and party, as it is the unofficial start of the sum-mer, many families across the United States will remember their lost loved ones, who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. This day originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate sol-diers who died in the war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in military ser-vice.

Recycling Containers We wanted to make all Saints Peter and Paul Parishioners aware of an upcoming change. On June 15 the three cardboard recycling containers will be removed from our property. The original purpose of the containers was to generate funds for our school. This is no longer a worthwhile scenario as most households are now capable of recycling on their own. The containers are also an eyesore to our neigh-bors in Hershey’s Mill whose homes back up to our property. We encourage you to continue to recycle as a good stewardship practice towards Creation. There are a few other local places that offer similar public containers for recycling if you need. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Bob Falkenstein

Contest!! A new name is needed for “Hospitality Weekend”

Let’s have some fun!! There has to be a better name than “Donut Sunday” or “Hospitality Week-end”, but so far no one on parish staff is clever enough to think of one. We want to see who can come up with the catchiest title for Hospitality Weekend. Saturday evening is always wine, cheese, and shrimp follow-ing the 5:30PM Vigil Mass and coffee, donuts, and bagels are offered following all Sunday morning Masses. We want to add some healthy items to the Sunday menu when we resume in the Fall. Send your ideas to: [email protected] or [email protected] by June 19th. A prize will be awarded to the most clever name. Thanks for your participation and creative ideas!!

Sacraments For You, Your Spouse, or Your Children

Were you or your spouse never confirmed? Has your child above the age of 9, never been baptized? Do you have a child over the age of 12, who never received Holy Communion or Confirmation? Do you have a non-Catholic spouse that might be open to considering becoming Catholic? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then RCIA might be the right fit for you! RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the process of preparing adults and children over the age of 10, for the Sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. To join the Fall RCIA group, or for any other inquiries, please contact: Daniel Hoover at: [email protected].

New Baptism Structure

Baptism is the process of a person becoming a new member of the Christian community. Be-cause of this, the Catholic Church prefers to have the community present to receive that person and recommends that baptisms happen within Mass. We have been offering baptisms during Mass, and the parents and extended families of the bap-tized children and their extended families have absolutely loved it. This has not been a perfect solution because some people are concerned that baptisms in-crease the length of the Mass. We are also blessed to have an influx of new families joining our parish and our requests for baptisms has ris-en. After discussion as a staff and with parish volun-teers, we have come up with a new system. We will still have some baptisms during Mass but only about half as often as in the past. Now we will also offer baptisms after Masses. We still think it is important for the community to be aware of its young parents and new members. Though some-times the baptisms won’t happen until after Mass, Fr. Jim will briefly greet the families and begin the Baptismal Rite at the beginning of those Masses. We hope this will be a helpful adjustment for eve-ryone involved. Thank you for your continued support of our par-ish, and if you do see young families worshipping here, please do everything you can to make them feel welcome. Being a young parent is a daunting task and to have a place where you feel you are accepted and loved goes a long way. Thanks. Daniel Hoover Director of Pastoral Ministries

11 Cents: Pray, Pay, Obey

I recently heard someone joking that to be a good

Catholic you simply have to “Pray, pay, and obey.”

Perhaps I am overly sensitive, but I found the tone

to be condescending, implying these were simple

things to do. Let’s examine them.

Pray. Prayer is not easy. With so many de-

mands on our time it is an act of discipline to carve

out time for prayer. When we do pray, there is no

guarantee that we will feel the benefits or consola-

tion of prayer, but we bravely return, believing

through faith that our prayer is not useless. Prayer,

although not always felt, is an act of opening our

soul to the Spirit of God to enter us and transform

us. The more open we are, the more we are trans-

formed and that openness is a deliberate act of the

will.

Pay. There are few people that were simply giv-

en a superabundance of money. We work for the

money we make and it is what allows us to feed our

families, pay for medical treatments, and enjoy the

life we have. To trust that our generosity in tithing is

seen and appreciated by God is no small belief. To

support a mission that is greater than any of us as

individuals is a big deal. Giving to a church allows

that church to serve the spiritual and physical

needs of our brother and sisters. Those that give,

offer a beautiful gift.

Obey. Obedience has to be the toughest one,

right? We humble ourselves to trust that the wis-

dom of the Church is greater than our inclinations

or preferences. We believe that the Holy Spirit has

guided and does guide our teachings and practices.

We are not blind sheep. We struggle, especially as

we pursue truth, but ultimately we obey the teach-

ings of a Church that Jesus is pleased to call His

Own.

Maybe what we do looks easy from the outside but

I don’t believe it is easy. I think it is courageous. I

would rather imperfectly serve the Church than live

ignorant of quiet glory of humble servitude to a

great God and a Prophetic Church.

Pray, pay, and obey? It is only by the grace of God

that I can I any of these things.

Liturgy Corner

Hi folks! As the summer months approach and some of our seasonal Music Ministries wind down I just wanted to say thank you to those who are par-ticipating in any of our Liturgical Ministries. We rely on and are indebted to our Eucharistic Ministers, excellent Lectors, devoted Sacristans, helpful Altar Servers, hospitable Greeters, and dedicated Ush-ers. I’d like to draw attention to our newest minis-try here: our Funeral Servers. This is a growing group of folks working in teams of two at each fu-neral, who take personal responsibility preparing for and assisting at Mass. I also really want to express my appreciation to those directing, playing for, or participating in the Chorale, Folk Group, Adult Choir and Youth Choir. I’m particularly thankful to those who have been singing in our newest musical group, the Chorale at our 5:30PM Saturday liturgies. It has been a great way for both our more experienced cantors and musically curious folks to come together in a relaxed atmosphere, praising God in song. Addi-tionally, this has been my first year directing the Youth Choir and I could not be more pleased with what our young people have accomplished, or the support I have received from their parents. Through the generosity of many, I am both hum-bled and honored to be able to continue guiding the Worship Department forward in building up the Body of Christ here at Saints Peter and Paul Par-ish.
