PARISH INFORMATION
WELCOME! We are happy you have chosen to worship with us and hope that you will make Saint Stephen’s parish your spiritual home.
BAPTISM – The Church asks that children be baptized soon after birth. Baptisms are celebrated once a month on a Sunday
afternoon. Our parish has implemented a three-month preparation period for baptism; the parents of the child should call as soon
as they want to schedule the baptism. Godparents must meet the requirements as set forth by Church Law.
MARRIAGE – The Roman Catholic Church affirms the belief that marriage is defined as the union of one man and one woman.
Baptized Catholics are bound by Church Law to marry in a Catholic Church and have the marriage witnessed by a validly ordained
priest or deacon in the presence of two witnesses. The engaged couple is to contact the parish office at least one year prior to the
intended marriage date.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK – Catholics who are advanced in age or seriously ill should make arrangements to contact the
parish office to receive the Sacrament. Visits to the homebound can be arranged upon request. When a loved one is near death,
please notify one of the priests. Catholics who are in a hospital should first contact the hospital chaplain in the event of an
emergency.
HOLY ORDERS – Any Catholic man who feels the Lord is calling him to the happy and fulfilling life of a priest can speak to
one of the priests or contact the Vocations Office at 973-313-6190. You can also visit their website at www.newarkpriest.com.
PARISH REGISTRATION – All Catholics who live within the territorial boundaries of Saint Stephen’s parish are considered
parishioners by virtue of their residence. We encourage all parishioners to fill out a census form so that we might better identify and
serve you in our ministries and programs. Census forms can be obtained in the front vestibule of Church or at the parish office.

John 18:33-37
Today’s feast is a relative newcomer to the Church’s liturgy – established by Pius XI, last century, as the Church’sresponse to the emergence of totalitarian regimes. There is a certain irony in the fact that when it was established earthly
kings and queens had become little more than figureheads. The gospels of the liturgies of this feast in the three year cycle, however, make it clear that this symbolic theme can still invite us to deepen our appreciation of the role of the Savior in the
designs of God. The first and second readings – from the prophecy of Daniel, concerning ‘the Son of Man’, and a reading fromthe Apocalypse proclaiming the fulfilment of the prophecy in Christ – remind us of the deep roots this theme has in the
Scriptures. This year’s gospel reading from John takes us to the heart of the drama being enacted before the Roman governor– as, according to the words of Jesus at the Supper, the ‘Son of Man’ is being ‘glorified’, and in him God is being glorified. Jesus
will reign, but he assures Pilate that his kingdom – ‘not of this world’ – is not in competition with the earthly powers Pilaterepresents. He will establish God’s reign, not by power and violence, but by bringing his ‘truth’ to the world, the truth that
is one of the principal themes of John’s gospel (‘Father, consecrate my disciples in the truth, your word is truth’, Jn 14:6; ‘IAM truth and life’, Jn 14:6). This truth is a sharing in the wisdom of the Father, the personal truth in which we come to know
who we are in the plan of God, the truth that ‘sets us free’ (Jn 8:32). The Kingdom announced and inaugurated by Jesus is arenewed creation, ruled by the ways of God - shaping all things, liberating them and leading them to their fullness. When Jesus
teaches that this reign of God has already begun in a hidden way (Mk 4: 26 etc.) he is telling us that we can know somethingof this final achievement of God, when the truth he has brought to the world shapes our lives.
The exchange between Jesus and Pilate also makes it clear that the execution of Jesus is a consequence of hisrejection by the establishment of the Jewish nation. In John’s gospel, this conflict is described in terms of the ‘truth’ that he
has brought from his Father: ‘It is because I speak the truth that you cannot believe me’ (8:45). He has urged his people tofind again their true calling in the designs of God, to be ‘a light to the nations’, showing the world the life and joy of a people
living according to the ways they have learned from his Father.John’s gospel, as we have seen, portrays Jesus as reigning on the Cross. His exchange with Pilate echoes through the
continuing narrative, ‘Here is your king’, Pilate declares (18:14); the governor’s ‘notice’ reads ‘King of the Jews’ (18:19); Jesusentrusts the beloved disciple – standing for us all – to his mother (19:26); ‘the blood and water’ from his side are solemnly
proclaimed as a blessing upon us all. What Jesus foretold early in his ministry has been realized: ‘The Son of Man must belifted up so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life’ (Jn 3:14). The symbol of kingship may have become
archaic, but what it speaks of in the Scriptures, concerning the role of the Savior in reign of God, has an everlasting relevance, far removed from the politics of this world.

Dear Friends,
You may have noticed a lot of activity on the lawn of the Church last weekend. One
of the Scouts in our Troop 305, Anthony Hayes, has chosen to do his Eagle Scout
service project to the benefit of the parish. Anthony is constructing a fire pit on the
lawn. The fire pit will be used for the bonfire at the Easter Vigil and for the flag
retirement ceremonies that the Scouts conduct during the year, most notably near
Memorial Day.
The fire pit sits at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical arms of a cross. The brick pavers that Anthony is
using match our existing Centennial Walkway and the area surrounding the Four Chaplains Monument. Once
completed, the new walkway and fire pit will complement what is already existing.
In addition to overseeing the work being done, the Eagle Scout candidate is responsible for recruiting volunteers,
arranging for the materials used and giving general supervision to each step of the project. Anthony has worked
many hours in preparation for his project to be successful. You may remember the Pancake Breakfast that Anthony
organized in October. That event was a success and helped him to raise some much needed funds.
I am proud of the work that Anthony has done to beautify our grounds and the work that all the Scouts and their
leaders do to help Saint Stephen’s be the parish that it is.
+++
Speaking of all of us doing our part, you will recall that last week, as I concluded my report on the financial
summary of our parish for the past fiscal year, I encouraged all of us to do what we can to strengthen our parish.
It is in this spirit that I appeal to you today. Over the past few years, we have been blessed with men and women
who assist by taking the collection at Mass. In this time, several have had to step down from their service due to
health concerns. I am grateful for what they did, many times it was done anonymously, to help our parish.
I know that some of us do not like to “join” another group. The good news is that the collection takers is not
another group to “join”. There are no meetings to attend! We are simply looking for individuals who can help us
at the Mass they go to.
So if you come to Mass, especially through the main doors on Kearny Avenue and notice that we may be short-
handed with taking the collection, please consider volunteering. It’s a great service to the parish and, an added
benefit, it burns some calories walking the aisles!
+++
I hope you will join us on Thanksgiving Day at 9:00 a.m. for our Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving Day. What a
wonderful way to begin the day! Blessed bread will be distributed to the families who attend.
Let us pray for one another! Oremus pro invicem!

Consider Singing in the Choir~~~~~~
Our parish choir is recruiting new choristers.~~~~~~
When you consider what effect music
has on the worship service and on the
deepest levels of the parishioners’ lives,
you can quickly see how important it is
to join the choir and help with this vital
ministry of the parish. Singing in the
parish choir or chorus is an excellent
way to assist in our parish worship and praise
celebration. If you haven’t tried to sing in the parish
choir before, give it a try.
Join us Thursday at 7:30 pm in the Choir
Room.Bob Maidhof, Music Director
Our parish children’s choir is also
recruiting new choristers.
The children’s choir is an excellent way for your
children to experience a more spiritual and deeper
understanding of worship and praise in the
celebration of Mass. Singing is a wonderful way for
them to express their participation in a ministry of
the parish.
Join us in the choir room on
Sundays at 11:00 A.M.

An invitation for the Men of the Parish
West Hudson Men’s Retreat November 30- December 2, 2018
The West Hudson Retreat Group invites men of the Parish to join them for their annual Retreat weekend,
November 30-December 2, 2018 at the Loyola Jesuit Center, 161 James Street, Morristown, NJ.
This year’s retreat centers on the theme:
An Invitation To Personal Discipleship, led by: Rev. Steve Pugliese, S.J. and Judy Schiavo.
What is Jesus asking of YOU in the Gospels? We will spend time reflecting on our own faith journey as we re-visit
the healings of Jesus and the importance of forgiveness in our daily lives.
Our weekend begins on Friday evening with dinner and ends early Sunday afternoon with a lunch. Three or four
thought provoking presentations made throughout the weekend by a Jesuit Retreat Master which leads to private
reflection and prayer.
The centerpiece of the retreat is the celebration of the Eucharist on Saturday and Sunday. Occasions are afforded
as well to experience the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, and Exposition and Benediction of
the Blessed Sacrament. The weekend is punctuated with ample periods for private reflection and prayer in beautiful
surroundings as well as consultations with members of the Jesuit staff, if one desires.
If the Lord is calling you to participate in this retreat weekend, we would love to hear from you. We can provide
transportation, if necessary, and arrange to have a room assigned to you.
If you have any questions or wish to join with us, please call Deacon Earl at 201-835-6171 or Ed Civinskas
at 201-991-6637. You may also call the Loyola Retreat House at 973-539-0740.

“Bread for the Journey”
Sessions are offered at 9:45 a.m. and
7:15 p.m. in Hedges Hall .
Refreshments will be served.
Do you ever feel like God is far away?
The whole story of salvation is the story of God
being present to His people—in Eden, in the
wilderness, in the Temple, and finally in the Person
of Jesus Christ. But the story doesn’t stop there.
He is still here with us. Under the appearance of
bread and wine, Jesus Christ is truly present in His
Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. In the Eucharist,
God invites us into a deeper experience of His
perfect love—and He is waiting for you!
In August, our pastor, Father Joe, announced a
“Year of the Eucharist” for our parish. During this
year, we will grow in our understanding of the
importance of this Sacrament.
Join us for this important series on the Eucharist!
