Second Sunday of Lent

Today we read the story of God’s surprising request of Abraham. God says, Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love...to the land of Moriah. There...offer him up as a holocaust. Abraham follows God’s directions and, the mo-ment before sacrificing his son, the Lord’s messenger calls out to Abraham, telling him to not lay a hand on the boy. Because of Abraham’s complete devotion and obedience to God, he is told he will be blessed abundantly and through his descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing. What seemed to lead to the failure of Abraham’s hopes and dreams eventually leads to their fulfillment. St. Paul’s letter of encouragement to the Romans liberates us today as it did Paul’s followers. If God is for us, who can be against us? Paul explains that God did not spare his own son for our sakes. Therefore, if since it is God himself who acquits us, who then can condemn us? The gospel of Mark relates the story of the Transfiguration. Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain...and he was trans-figured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white. Elijah and Moses appear and converse with Jesus. A voice is heard coming from a cloud overshadowing them saying, This is my beloved Son. Listen to him. Jesus tells the disciples to keep the experience a secret until he rises from the dead.

Lenten Almsgiving Mission Maison Fortune Orphanage in Haiti

There have been a lot of changes in our mission in Haiti this past year. We are no longer connected with the McKenna Technical Institute (the foundation that was supporting our students in post secondary and vocational schools). We have incorporated a separate foundation, “Kwasans” to fund a career placement office and business school scholarships for the older children who have graduated from the Orphanage. Chip Wirth will be with us to explain all these exciting new developments, as well as the new name “Kwasans” for our foundation. While the Orphanage itself is largely self-sufficient with donors through the Maison Fortune Orphanage Foundation (MFO), we still refer to the mission as the orphanage as a shorthand for all of our efforts. Of course, while individual donations directly to the MFO are always welcome to continue to provide for the younger children, we have shifted our focus to job creation and development to help build the economy and provide for the future of the young people as they become adults. This is our annual Len-ten Almsgiving mission. Please be generous in your support of the children. Fr. Neil

The Second Sunday of Lent Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent. We hear St. Mark’s version of the Transfiguration. In the Old Tes-tament reading from the Book of Genesis, Abraham demonstrates his faith by his willingness to sacrifice Isaac, his only son, if God commands it. In his Letter to the Romans, St. Paul tells us that God sacrificed his only Son for our salvation; and that God’s Son now intercedes for us in heaven. In the gospel, Jesus goes up the mountain and is transfigured, shining with a radiance that reflects his divine glory. The disciples see Jesus conversing with Moses and Elijah, fulfilling both the Law and the Prophets in his own person, thus proclaiming that he himself is the Mes-siah. The Transfiguration foretells both Jesus’ resurrection from the dead and our hope of eternal life, when our own bodies will be transfigured and glorified in heaven.

The Transfiguration story takes on a whole different meaning in the context of Lent and the first two readings. Isaac is a Christ figure in the Old Testament. Abraham is willing to sacrifice his only son in obedience to the will of God. God never intended to allow Abraham to carry out the sacrifice. But God is willing to sacrifice his only Son. St. Paul tells us that God did not spare his own son as a sign of his love for us. But, like the story of Isaac, God does not will the sacrifice. God allows it. Jesus accepts the call to sacrifice himself out of obedience to the Father because he shares his Father’s love for us. In the gospel, Jesus sets aside his glory. If Jesus were to ascend to heaven from the Transfiguration in his divinity, then salvation would not be possible for humanity. In his humanity he goes down the mountain (he goes back into the world) and heads for Jerusalem. He willingly undertakes this journey of self-denial to the Cross to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. It is Jesus’ total self-emptying for the sake of fallen hu-manity that makes possible our rising back to God. It is this same self-denial that we seek during Lent that will al-low us to rise to God as well.

The Transfiguration gives the apostles hope after Jesus is crucified. When they finally believe the Resurrection, they recall the glorification of Christ. After the Resurrection, Jesus tells them that they will have to suffer the Cross as well if they want to be glorified with him. Our Lenten journey is a time to transform our vision so that we may will-ingly embrace the Cross in our own lives. We seek to become transfigured spiritually into the image of Christ in this life and so attain eternal life with him in the next.

The 1st Communion Rite of Enrollment will be celebrated today at the 10 a.m. Mass. We have sixty-three candi-dates preparing to receive the Sacrament on May 5th. Please keep these children and their families in your prayers. There will be a speaker from the SPRED Program at all the masses today. This wonderful ministry to young adults with special needs is looking for some volunteers to help out on Wednesday evenings. No experience necessary; all training will be provided. The only requirement is a loving heart.

There are still some Little Black Books of Daily Lenten Meditations available in the church or at the rectory. There are additional copies of Matthew Kelly’s book “Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic” still available as well. There is no charge for either of these books. Our Lenten Reflections Evening of Prayer will be led by deacon Ray Arroyo this Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. This week’s schedule of Lenten prayer opportunities can be found on page four.

The Parents’ Association will be hosting our annual St. Patrick’s Day Party this Saturday, March 3rd. This is al-ways a fun event with good food, good music and good friends. Tickets are available in the back of church today and at the rectory.

The First Scrutiny Rite for our Elect will be celebrated next Sunday at the 8 a.m. mass. Girl Scout Sunday will be celebrated with a special blessing at the 10 a.m. mass next weekend. These rituals honor the faith journeys of our people and help form our community

The annual Multi -Parish Mission will be held at St. Pascal on March 5-7, Monday - Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. Father Jim Presta is a wonderful spiritual leader who will preach this year, guiding us more deeply into our relation-ship with the Lord as we journey through Lent. This year’s theme is “Standing With Mary at the Foot of the Cross”. This is an exciting event that you should not miss. Come for one, two, or all three evenings. More information is on page six.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

LENTEN REFLECTIONS Lent is more than just “giving up” dessert. How can we have a deeper Lenten experience as we prepare for Easter joy? Join us for 3 Evenings of Reflection and hear what suggestions our special guest speakers have to offer. Each talk will take place at 6:30 in the Church and will be followed by a light meal of soup and bread served in the Church vestibule.

with Deacon Ray Arroyo Tuesday, February 27th

Deacon Ray is a Permanent Deacon currently ministering at St. Aloysius Parish in Wicker Park. His work at St. Aloysius includes walking with their RCIA candidates. He is also a frequent speaker at their retreats for men.

Stations of the Cross

Friday, March 2 2:20 pm and 7:00 PM

The Stations of the Cross is a Lenten devotion that offers witness to Jesus’ Passion and

Death. At each station we use our senses and our imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus’ Suffering, Death, and Resurrection, and to simply experience the visual images

to reflect on Christ’s love for us.

ST. ROBERT BELLARMINE SPRED NEEDS YOUR HELP!!! SPRED is a faith community ministry that serves individuals with developmental or intellectual

challenges. SPRED is an acronym for Special Religious Enrichment Development. The purpose of SPRED is to make it possible for each parish to welcome persons with special needs into a SPRED group where they become prepared to participate in the liturgical life of their parish, receive their sacraments, and are part of a community where their faith is nourished by volunteers and our special friends. Volunteers need no prior experiences working with our young adults with special needs. All volunteers attend a helper information session and continue to be mentored by the SPRED catechists in the group. The SPRED process values each person and responds to the individual needs and gifts of all. It is based on friend-ship and respect, and honors the learning styles of those with special needs. SRB SPRED meets on Wednesday evenings from September – May. We are in need of additional volunteers!!

PLEASE HELP!!! Please contact Julie Oloroso at (773) 218-4754 or Michael Radcliffe at (773) 771-4033 for additional information.
