Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The author of the Book of Wisdom praises the Lord’s power, justice and mercy, proclaiming that God’s might is the source of justice; that his mastery over all things makes him lenient toward all. By his own example God teaches that those who are just must show kindness. God’s mercy gives his children hope because he does not judge harshly, but allows repentance for their sins. St. Paul tells the Romans that the Holy Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness, be-cause we do not know how to pray as we should. The Holy Spirit intercedes for his holy ones according to God’s will. In Matthew’s gospel Jesus relates three parables describing the kingdom of heaven. In the parable of the wheat and the weeds, the farmer allows the weeds to grow alongside the wheat, rather than risk pulling out some of the wheat by mis-take. At the time of the harvest the mature wheat will be gathered into the barn while the weeds will be burned in the fire. In the parable of the mustard seed, Jesus describes the kingdom as beginning with the smallest of seeds that grows into the largest of plants, providing shelter for all. In the parable of the yeast which causes the entire batch of bread to rise, Jesus shows that the power of God can transform all of creation and his grace is more than enough for all of human sinfulness. From the Pastor’s Desk

Today’s scriptures continue the theme of hope for God’s people. We hear that God is God alone and he has the care of all. We hear that the Holy Spirit continues to intercede on our behalf (which is why Confirmation is a sacrament that invites us into a lifetime relationship of grace with God, not a past “done deal” event). And we hear that God is patient, continually offering us his grace and mercy. Though we may sin and fall short, God gives us the grace we need to seek reconciliation and healing.

The author of the Book of Wisdom gives us hope that, although God is a God of justice, he judges with clemency (mercy) and governs with leniency. God shows us through his own example that we are to be people who are kind and just to others. We have cause for hope because the Lord will permit repentance for our sins.

St. Paul builds on this cause for hope as he tells the Romans that the Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness, and intercedes for us even when we do not know how to pray as we should. St. Paul concludes this reading with the re-markable good news that the Holy Spirit intercedes for his holy ones according to God’s will. He calls God’s people “holy ones” reminding us that we are in God’s care; and he tells us that the intercession is according to God’s will, meaning that God has our salvation as his goal.

In the gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the wheat and the weeds. Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a field that a good man (God) has sown with good seed (his holy ones). When the servants discover that weeds have grown up among the wheat, they ask the owner if they should pull them out. He tells them no, for they might also pull out the wheat. He says to allow the weeds to grow with the wheat until the time of harvest. At that time the weeds will be bundled for burning while the wheat will be gathered into his barn. The evil ones, sown by the devil, will burn at the judgment day; but his holy ones who have remained faithful, despite the temptations of the world, will inherit eternal life.

In the longer version of the gospel Jesus adds two more parables, the parable of the mustard seed and the parable of the yeast. The mustard seed, though the tiniest of seeds, grows into the largest of plants, offering shelter to all. The yeast, in small amounts, is able to leaven the entire batch of flour, allowing the whole batch (about 50 loaves) to rise. The leaven is the power of God that overcomes sin and allows the grace of God to be effective in our lives. Both of these parables tell us that the kingdom of heaven is big enough for all who come to believe and share God’s love.

Jesus concludes the gospel with the explanation that at the end time he will send his angels to throw those who cause others to sin and the evildoers into the fiery furnace. But the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their heavenly Father. While God’s justice cannot be avoided, our Lord is kind and merciful in his judgment.

The righteous are those who act with kindness and mercy toward others, who do not judge but seek reconciliation and healing of relationships within our families, our community and among nations. Those who forgive are the ones who will be forgiven. Those who show mercy to others will receive God’s mercy. Those who intercede for others will obtain Christ’s intercession at the throne of God. Those who feed the poor will be fed at the heavenly banquet. In short, those who imitate Jesus are the ones who will be transformed into his divine image in his eternal kingdom. And those who don’t will be cast into the fiery furnace. God gives us free will and offers us a choice. The decision is ours to make. God offers us mercy and reconciliation. We must be willing to seek conversion in order to receive it.

The living witness to our hope in Christ, mediating God's presence in the world, is carried out in concrete ways in our world. Our Ministers of Care visit the sick and the homebound, bringing God’s love in their words and prayers and bringing the Eucharist to those who cannot come to Church. In the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick those who suffer receive the comfort and strength of God’s healing presence. If you or someone you know is sick, home-bound or in the hospital, nursing home or rehab, please call the rectory to make arrangements for a visit. Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is one of the two sacraments of healing (reconciliation is the other). It is traced back to the Apostle James who wrote, “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up” (James 5:14-15). The sacrament gives spiritual healing, comfort and strength to the sick. It is not a magic formula that promises physical recovery from illness or injury. Rather it reminds the

faithful that God is with them in their suffering, giving them courage in the midst of tribulation. The spiritual healing is the realization that God will never abandon his people. All the sacraments are instruments of grace that invite us to a deeper relationship of love and trust in the Lord.

Persons who are gravely ill, of advanced age or about to undergo serious surgery or involved in a traumatic accident or medical event (such as stroke or heart attack) should receive this sacrament. Ideally the sacrament should be celebrated when the person is conscious and aware of his/her surroundings so that the healing power and grace for the comfort of the soul can be experienced. Then, if the person is able, he/she should receive communion, union with the Risen Lord.

We celebrate this sacrament the first Saturday of every month after the morning mass. I will celebrate this sacrament with those who cannot come to church and with those in need at other times as well. Please call the rectory to schedule an appointment or home or hospital visit. When someone you know is approaching their final illness or of extreme age, please contact me as soon as possible. Do not wait for the final moment of death as it is not always possible for me to make it in time and last moment anointing deprives the dying person of the comfort of the encounter with Christ.

This is not always possible, especially in the case of traumatic injury, accident or medical event (such as stroke or heart attack) or danger of death. In these cases a priest should be sent for immediately. The dying person will still receive the objective grace present in the sacrament; and a priest should be available for the spiritual comfort of family and friends.

Weddings Arrangements to be made with a priest at least six months in advance. Please contact the rectory for date and time availability before making other arrangements. Baptisms Celebrated the second and fourth Sunday at 1:15 p.m. Parents need to register at the rectory office. Baptismal preparation class for first time Parents and Godparents is offered on the last Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the rectory. Please note: there are no baptisms scheduled during the season of Lent. Confessions/Reconciliations Saturdays 4:00 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. or by appointment. Anointing of the Sick 1st Saturday of the month after the 8:30 a.m. mass. Eucharistic Adoration & Benediction Third Wednesday of every month. Adoration begins after 8:30 a.m. mass. Benediction at 5 p.m. Please sign up at the rectory office. Novena Mother of Perpetual Help Novena is offered on Tuesday evenings at 6:30p.m. in the church. Recitation of the Rosary Monday through Saturday at 8:00 a.m.
