Third Sunday of Advent

The Third Sunday of Advent is traditionally known as “Gaudete Sunday” from the Latin for “Rejoice!” This theme is echoed in our readings. The prophet Zephaniah calls the people to “Shout for joy, O daughter Zion! Sing joyfully, O Israel! Be glad and exult with all your heart.” The reason to rejoice is that God has removed his judgment against them and will restore their fortunes. In fact, God himself will rejoice over them with gladness. St. Paul tells the Philip-pians to “Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: Rejoice!” In the gospel John the Baptist announces the good news that the Messiah is coming. In Advent we celebrate the coming of our Savior because we know that God has visited his people. He has taken away our sins; he has accomplished our salvation. Indeed, there is much cause for rejoicing.

Third Sunday of Advent Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate Gaudete Sunday, a time to rejoice as we prepare for the birth of Jesus. As we get ready to cele-brate Christmas we are called to reflect on the blessings in our lives, especially our loved ones and those who have been good to us. The focus of Advent is the opening of our hearts to the love of God, made visible to us in Christ. This great mystery of our faith invites us into a personal relationship with the God who loves us, and to express that relationship to those around us.

Our scriptures echo last week’s readings, calling us to rejoice in the Lord. Zephaniah’s words are full of hope and joy. He invites the people to rejoice and be glad. God has removed his judgment from the people and will end their mis-fortunes. He tells the people to fear not because God is in their midst, a mighty savior who will renew them in his love. St. Paul repeats this call, telling the Philippians to rejoice always. They are to have no anxiety because the Lord is near. Fear not. Do not be anxious about the things of this world. This is the message Jesus repeats many times in the gospels. This is wonderful news for all of us.

John the Baptist proclaims the fulfillment of this promise in Jesus. Having called us to prepare the way of the Lord, John announces the coming of the Messiah, who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. In Christ’s birth, God has spoken his Word of solidarity with our human family. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we are invited into his divine family. John uses the metaphor of “gathering the wheat into his barn.” Jesus himself will reap the harvest of his faithful peo-ple. This is the good news that John preached to the people.

This good news calls for a response from us. The people ask John the Baptist, what are they to do? He tells them to share with those who have less, do not steal or defraud others, nor injure their reputations. Quite simply, the repent-ance that we express is to do as Jesus did: take care of the needy, be kind to one another and live justly. We rejoice because we have been blessed. We are called to live in gratitude. Because God has been generous to us, freely giving us forgiveness, grace and mercy, we are to extend forgiveness, grace and mercy to those around us.

Thank you to Deacon Bill for hosting the Altar Server Tree Trimming Party last Friday. It was good to see the servers enjoying themselves. I appreciate their contributions to our worship services.

Congratulations to all our children who received the Sacrament of First Reconciliation last Saturday. Thank you to MaryEllen Casselman and all the catechists and volunteers for their hard work and dedication in preparing for this celebration. Please keep the children and their families in your prayers.

Thank you to the Parents’ Association for hosting the Pancake Breakfast with Santa last Sunday. They always do a great job and I always eat too much, but it was a lot of fun.

Our Asian-American Community will host Simbang Gabi, a Filipino Advent Mass tradition this Monday. Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m., followed by food, fellowship and music in Kernaghan Hall. This is a wonderful time, as well as a spiritual gift to prepare for Christmas. I hope to see you there. Please see page six for details.

The Advent Reconciliation Service will be held on Tuesday at 7 p.m. In the context of scripture, prayer and song, we will express our communal need for healing and for joy in God’s mercy. Opportunities for individual reconciliations will be available under both face-to-face and anonymous (in the confessional) forms. The church is open all day this Wednesday for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, concluding with Benediction at 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to come early to treat themselves to some quiet time with the Lord in the midst of the hectic time of holiday prepara-tions and activities.

The School Christmas Pageant will be held in the church this Friday morning at 10:30. All are welcome to come and see the joy the children have in celebrating the birth of our Savior. The school will let out at 11:30 for the Christmas holidays until Monday, January 7. Thank you to all the faculty and staff for all they do for the children. I wish them a Blessed Christmas, a Happy New Year, and a well deserved vacation.

The church will be closed during the day on Monday, December 24 to decorate for Christmas. There will not be an 8:30 morning mass. Our Christmas Eve masses will be celebrated at 4:00 and 10:30 p.m. Christmas Day masses will be celebrated at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 12 noon.

Have a blessed Advent. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
