Page 2 1st Sunday in Lent Dear Friends in Christ,

The devil’s temptation of Jesus, and His response, in this weekend’s Gospel, show that God/Jesus is not indifferent toward human suffering and hunger, but He wants to place them in the proper context by putting God first in our agenda of events, then other things will follow in proper order. Accordingly, our parish has chosen, this Lent, to Journey with the SACRED HEART OF JESUS. His heart will bring us to the merciful heart of the Father. He will lead us to be ambassadors of that heart in service to others.

Matthew 4 presents us with the three temptations of Jesus: Food, Jumping from the parapet of the Temple and Worship. Last year we looked at these temptations in view of Pleasure, Power and Pride (Praise) respectively. St. Luke sees the first temptation of Jesus in relation to His hunger after He fasted for forty days. But St. Matthew understands it from a broader per-spective of the perennial human quest to satisfy and eliminate hunger. In other words, is there any other cause that at-tracts attention more than elimination of world’s hunger? Jesus’ response is rather striking, “Man does not live on bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” With this He emphasizes the primacy of God in all of human dealings. He shows that all of our efforts, no matter how noble, when devoid of God can only end up in giving stones, not bread, to the hungry. This has been tested and proven in Third World Countries and among the poor over and over again. That is the rea-son we believe that the Journey with the Sacred Heart will help us to appreciate God’s merciful heart and how we can be a conduit of His heart to our world through our Lenten works of penance and charity.

Please take advantage of all the spiritual activities we have planned for this Lenten season such as Stations of the Cross, 24 Hour Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament amongst others. ImaBridge Africa has requested to do their mission of charity with us at St. Patrick and talked at all the Masses this weekend. Please consider ImaBridge as a recipient of your Lenten Almsgiv-ing. Please see the details of our Lenten Mission: Sacred Heart Mission: “Building A Civilization of Love” on the next page and make plans to attend.

We pray that that journey will lead us to a better understanding of God’s hearts so that He will quench the real hunger of our hearts as we work to end other types of hunger in the world.

Prayerfully, Fr. Godwin

Unscrambling The Temptations

Lent is here. Jesus is tempted. As are we. But it is often difficult to understand the scriptural temptations, as found in the Gospel. Let us look at them. They will help us with our own.

(1) First is food. Jesus has been on a major fast, and the devil knows it. “Don’t worry!” he says. “You are rich! You are God! You can have all the food you want. Just turn this rock into bread!” “The Father’s words are bread enough for me,” Jesus says.

(2) Second, what about honor? The devil says, “You can be the great one whom everyone respects! Think about how good that would feel. Side with me! OK, technically you would be worshipping me, but if you understand things my way, you are just taking care of ‘number one.’ Try it.” Jesus’ quiet response: “I pledge myself to the Lord my God, not to you. Such honors would tear me apart.”

(3) Third, pride. The devil: “You know that heaven must do whatever you command! Jump off this temple roof and prove your importance! Angels will rush down from heaven to catch you! Everyone will admire you! Come on, show us what you’ve got!” Je-sus: “Yes I am very close to heaven and to God. But hear this. I choose to let God’s gentle, quiet love be my life. Not pride.”

Three temptations and three balanced, humble answers. Jesus knew how to hear his Abba’s words over the devil’s babble, and he would not desert the great love of his life, God. The devil, canny, resolves to try again later (on the cross).

This analysis should make it easier to understand our own temptations. Check it out this Lent. Possessions? Cars, books, clothes, appearance, and so on. You know the kind of list we could each make. Eating too much. Buying too much. Sexual lures. Holding our tongue when fairness demands that we speak out. Speaking out when we should be quiet. OK, these are just human foibles but they are also traps. “Look away from God,” they say. “He is outmoded anyway. Be interested in yourself. No one else is.”

And honors? Do you ever try to please other people so they will have a good opinion of you? We used to call this “human re-spect.” What would happen if your son or daughter were thrown off the team at school? How did you react when you lost your job? And so on.

Americans still sit at their desks or cars or kitchen tables, working hard, worrying about meetings and deadlines, wondering if they can live up to their own expectations and those of others. Or how to just keep their jobs. We say we have essential work to do. We are important. What we do makes us worthwhile.

Temptations. Could this Lent be the right time to unscramble your values? Since God is the most wonderful and loving being any-where, do you really want to block him out with lesser, undependable desires, especially those that boil down to riches, honors or pride? Isn’t this true: whatever really counts in your life is actually rooted in the love of God and not the other way around.

Here is how Jesus put it: “Love the Lord your God above all things and love your neighbor as yourself” (Mk 12:30-31).

Don’t Forget or You’ll Be Late for Mass

ImaBridge Africa thanks Montini Student & St. Patrick parishioner Mac DeLozier for his donation or $100 to Mon-tini’s ImaBridge Non-Uniform Day Collection. Mac found the money at the zoo and decided to donate it to Ima-Bridge in exchange for not having to wear his uniform.

ImaBridge Africa has been Montini’s service project this school year. Each non-uniform Friday, the students are encouraged to donate $2.00 to ImaBridge in exchange for being allowed to not wear their uniform. This collected money has been used to help purchase uniforms for ap-prox. 300 children in Nigeria who would otherwise not be able to go to school because they did not have an uni-form.

ImaBridge thanks Montini and in a special way this past week - Mac DeLozier - for helping us to continue to build this bridge of love.

Vocation Corner: LENT!

Each year we approach these 40 days with excitement and

maybe a little nervousness or apprehension if we’re being honest. Of course the goal of Lent is to go deeper in our relationship with Christ by working on our faults and trying to build up good habits. Another way to put it would be to say that we strive to put our own will and our own desires aside and to strive to fulfill God’s will more perfectly as we progress through this season. If this is the case, that this season is about doing God’s will, then this seems like a perfect opportunity for discernment of God’s call! You see, every week I write in the column about ways in which we can both discover and answer God’s call for each of us, whether it be in the day to day details of life or one’s big picture vocation! Lent is a perfect and super-charged op-portunity to make a concerted effort each day to discover-ing God’s will! I recommend adding one more thing to the list of things that you’re doing for Lent and I’ll tell you right away that it’s nothing to be worried about because it won’t take much time. Simply add this prayer into your daily rou-tine each day during Lent: “God, please give me the grace to keep an open heart and to desire your will over my own, and give me the strength to say YES to your call when you reveal it to me.” That’s all! Have an amazing Lent!

Fridays: March 10, 17, 24, 31 & April 7 6:00PM in the Church

The Stations of the Cross is a Lenten devotion that offers witness to Jesus’ Passion and Death. At each station we use our senses and our imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus’ suffering, Death, and Resurrection, and to simply experience the visual images to reflect on Christ’s love for us..

Lenten Friday Simple Soup & Salad Dinners

After walking the way of the cross with Jesus, come and share fellowship with your parish family while enjoying a simple soup and salad Lenten meal. Supper begins imme-diately upon completion of the stations at about 7:00PM in Muldoon Hall. There is no cost, but a free willing offer-ing is appreciated. The funds collected help to fund the next week’s supper.

Each week’s supper is sponsored/chaired by a different ministry or organization.

April 4/5, 11/12

Jesus asks, “Could you not spent one hour with me?” to the disciples on Holy Thursday in the Garden of Gethsem-ane. Let us be able to respond to Him with a hearty YES during this Lenten Season.

For those who wish to commit to spending one hour each week of Lent, there is a sign-up sheet by the Blessed Mother. We need to know that someone will be with Jesus each hour. If you can’t commit to the six weeks, but would consider being a substitute please sign-up as well.

If you cannot commit to an hour each week, please come and spend whatever amount of time you can with Him during each week of Lent. He wants to spend time with you. Come talk with and listen to Him. Draw closer to Him during this season of Lent so you can rejoice with His Easter Sunday Resurrection.

St. Patrick’s Day 2017 Friday in Lent Can We Eat Meat?

Frequently there will be discussion concerning the is-sue of abstaining from meat on Saint Patrick's Day, March 17, when it falls on a Friday of Lent. In virtue of canon 1245 of the Code of Canon Law, a priest who pos-sesses diocesan faculties granted by the Diocesan Bishop may dispense in individual cases for a just reason from the observance of both fast and abstinence, or commute these obligations to some other pious activity. This year, however, Bishop David Malloy is granting the dispen-sation to all members of the diocese, so that you can enjoy your corn beef and cabbage. It is recommended that Catholics should do some penance in place of their being allowed to eat meat on this Lenten Friday.

A Prayer for Lent Eternal God, the refuge of all your children, in our weakness, you are our strength, in our darkness, you are our light, in our sor-row, you are our comfort. May we always live in your presence, and serve you in our daily lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

(St. Boniface)

St. Patrick Catholic Church Parish Registration - Do You Need to Register?

ARE YOU: (1) New to the parish; (2) Moving back; (3) Just Married; (4) Attending mass but never officially registered? (4) Even if you grew up in St. Patrick, you (as an adult) need to register independent from your parents.

Please do not take your church registration for granted. Attending Mass is not enough; there must be an official rec-ord of your membership in the Parish. Parish registration is essential for many reasons. It becomes important when you or your family members are receiving the Sacraments - First Communion, Baptism, Confirmation and Marriage. Registration is also required for those wishing to become a Baptism or Confirmation sponsor. In addition, becoming a member of a parish gives one the identity of belonging to a family—the parish family of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

If you are not officially registered with the parish, please do so as soon as possible. All you have to do is contact the par-ish office at 815-385-0025 or stop in during office hours and request a registration packet. Registration packets are also available on the parish website at www.stpatrickmchenry.org—just click on Registration/Moving at the top of the screen.

Sacraments

Baptism of Infants or children under 7 years of age:

You must be a registered parishioner of St. Patrick prior to scheduling a Baptism. To schedule a Baptism, please begin by calling the parish office. Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please consider scheduling your child’s Baptism be-fore your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is re-quired for the parents. This class is offered on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is required and you may take the class before your child is born.

Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an overview of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.
